I recently brought up an anecdote in which a cell phone got me in trouble. It turns out everyone in the group at some point has been caused pain by their phone. I thought to myself, are they REALLY necessary? I realize I sound like my grandpa here, but They constantly torture us with their smug little ability to be in contact with everyone, even if it is unwanted. Don't get me wrong, I like pulling out my phone and faking to text in awkward situations or the ability to just talk to someone if I feel like it, but this can be done on a home phone.

Opinions, Escapees?

Yes.... and I hate it. I went landline for a while, even though it was rather nice, the inconveniance was irritating.

Well, to the point where I can contact a person if I really need to. I never cared much for my cell otherwise. Oh, and it's nice that I don't have to use my voice to text. That's about it.

I don't really believe they're a necessary part of life, but they certainly are damn convenient. I could live without my cell if I had to. What seems absurd to me is the age at which kids are getting cell phones now, but maybe I just don't put a lot of faith in children.

Off-topic: Were the last two poll options REALLY necessary? Really?

no, not only are they no necessary, they are annoying as hell.

Something about people now days, makes them think that they will die if they don't have their magic idiot machine stuck to their ears. And you can't just hang out with someone without them texting under the table the whole night.

i heard a comedian talking about the blue tooth things: "i didn't know that was a phone, i just thought it was part of the governments douche bag tracking program."

I don't think they're really necessities. I mean, ten years ago, they weren't nearly as commonplace as they are now, and we got along just fine.

Then again, it's gotten to the point where we're so used to the convenience that it feels like we need them. I know I'd feel naked if I went out without my phone. What if I get a call from work? What if I need to call home? What if I get bored and wanna play Tetris?

I only use my cell to ask family what last minute items they want from the grocery store. Kinda wish it had a camera though.

Well, technically no, they aren't a necessity of life. However, they can be incredibly convenient in case of an emergency or just in communicating with people more easily. Even though I could live without my cell phone, I certainly wouldn't want to.

I have no reason for a cellphone ever. Let's make something clear. Sometimes, I don't want to be reached. You call my home phone or you get nothing, alright? I have an answering machine. That's what it's there for, so I can get back to you...if I feel like it. If you guys have a problem with that, leave a message after the beep. I'm sure I'll get RIGHT back to you.

I don't know what you do but I've found the fact that you can talk to people instantly 100s of metres away without having to use a horse kind of a benefit. Especially when you have to arrange things in a very short amount of time.

Example: you agreed to meet somebody somewhere but upon getting there you realize it's huge and there's no way you'll find them without additional help, what do you do? Phone them up and ask "where the bloody hell are you" and they'll in kind tell you and problem solved. That's an hour of searching around not wasted.

I don't use my mobile phone too often, but when I do I see at as an important bit of equipment.

I kinda like knowing that if my sister falls and breaks her leg (as she lives in a town that's covered in snow and ice 10/12 months of the year, it's more likely than it sounds) she'll be able to call someone for help, so, I hate to admit it, but yeah, I guess I do think cell phones are a neccessary evil.

If there is an accident, or an emergency, or something of the sort, it certainly does come in handy...

There is something wrong with mine as one of my female friends keeps saying she get perverted messages from mine(Fucking Telstra). So yeah I hate my phone as its only good use nowadays is tetris when my DS runs out of power.

My phone makes me happy, if I'm bored, I have so many awesome games, if I'm sad, I have FML and Epic Fail to make me laugh and realize that my life isn't shitty compared to that guy. If I want to read, I have classics. If I want to know what song that is, I have Shazam. If I'm lost I have a GPS and a compass. I have the Internet. I even have a lightsabre.

Dat iPhone, people.

Uhh, that kind of depends on what you do for a living. I have a super-basic cell, I've had it for over 2 years and my sister has been through 3-4 in that same time period...

I ended up switching to a cell phone from my land line simply because it was cheaper. If I don't want to get phone calls, I can turn it off and it will go to voice mail, just like my land line. I was hesitant about getting a cell phone because people could call me no matter where I was, then I realized I didn't have to take it with me all the time, and I could turn it off. I figured it would be handy after going for several walks in the woods and seeing some wolves, mountain lions, and being charged at by an angry cow. A mobile means of communication can be handy in an emergency.

Car engine blew up for the 2nd time in 6 months while driving to school (it got hydrolocked because of an unfortunate combination of idiocy and a cold air intake before I got the car)
Soo
Engine: Dead
Me: Middle of nowhere, AKA Fucked
If I didn't have my cell phone I probably would've been out there for 8 or so hours.
