Fellow Escapist, I'm having a bit of a problem. I have already beaten mass effect 2 twice now, and am currently working on my third play through. Today, I was playing and looked over at my girlfriends computer and she randomly had up cheats on the game. I didn't really pay attention until I found this one cheat that lets you max out all powers(Basically spending experience and getting it back, so you can spend it again). I didn't think it would work. So I keep playing and then later I decide "what the hell, lets try it" Lo and behold it works.

Now I've already beaten the game at least once, so I'm posing the question and the decision to the rest of you. Is it really cheating if you've already beaten the game once without cheating?

EDIT:Spelling

If you're using a "cheat" then it's cheating, no matter what. But, If you've already enjoyed the game experience that you bought the game for and just want to screw around, then why not?

No, I cheated my arse of in Fallout 3, why? Because I wanted to have fun, cause some mayhem in a waist land and lay waist to Raiders!

Technically, yes, because using a cheat is the definition of cheating. So if you use one then you're cheating, no matter what.

However, for the poll purposes, I said no. Mainly because when you've already beaten a game without cheating, then I reckon it's fair play to use whatever cheats you want afterwards. Especially if it makes the game more fun. If I beat Halo 3 on Legendary using perfectly fair and legitimate gameplay, then surely afterwards I'm within my rights to repeat the feat later on with an infinite ammo cheat, or the ability to jump twice as high, or with tiny-head Unggoy? If it makes the game more fun then there's nothing really wrong with it, I think, though obviously this only really applies after you've already finished the game fairly.

What you do in an unscored, single-player game is entirely between you and God. Just do whatever's fun for you.

Oh, and that phrase you used is spelled "lo and behold." I do apologize for my pedantry, but I'd really like to see more people getting that right.

The whole idea of cheating in a game being bad is silly; I mean, it's not like you actually get anything out of it other than the fun of playing in the first place anyway.

Well yes it is technically, but if you've already beaten the game legitimately and just want to screw around, then I don't see the harm in that. Hell, I've done it myself. However in the case of ME2, if you've still got goals to complete like say getting your entire team through the suicide mission, then you still might want to refrain from cheating.

It's ok, thanks

I tend to cheat/mod if possible only after I've completely finished everything I can, possibly multiple times. It can be an excellent way to draw some extra fun out of a game you've played to death. I don't ever cheat before beating a game, because that is the fastest way to ruin the experience. Though, sometimes I will install mods before beating a game, but that's usually to fix an annoyance that is ruining the experience for me already.

I also never cheat in multiplayer since that ruins the game for others, and frankly it's no fun for me either. When you cheat in singleplayer, at least you're only cheating yourself.

On the current profile I'm using, I got everybody to survive the first time, through on my actual first time playing, I had one person die (I was a low paragon and I had zaeed...didn't know I needed high paragon at the time)

Multiplayer Cheating/Modding is not cool with me. Period. I've been cheated in quite a few Gears 2 matches by guys wielding modded controllers and chainsaw glitchin'

It's always perfectly fine to cheat in single player. It's not ok to cheat in multiplayer, though. Ever.

Yes, it is cheating, but who cares? You beat it the hard way already. Some consider using a guide book or walkthrough in any way to get through a game to be cheating. I tend to try and do as much as I can on my own the first time around, then later on if I want to I'll peek in a guide or whatever. I own, at most... 3 or 4 official or unofficial game guides. I'd rather not use one, though FFVII's is integral to a maxed-out playthrough, and FFVIII's I borrowed from a friend after beating it on my own (and spending literally hours on the end fight).

Also it's like the arguments about twinking in an MMO. You did it once the hard way (unless someone else twinked you, and if you had fun then who the eff cares), so heck yes you should be able to pimp your newbies out.

Once I've beaten the game, the second play-through is mostly dicking around seeing how I can break the game. You've already beaten it, might as well get the most fun out of it. And everyone knows the only way you can o that is by making yourself into a invincible force that would make god embarrassed of his impotence.

While it is still cheating, I would say it's alright because you've already experienced the game once (well twice) without cheating.

It's the same as what I did with Grand Theft Auto IV. I finished it once without cheating then on my second playthrough I used as many cheats as I felt like using.

You have to at least have beaten the game first and experience it the way the developers wanted you to play it.

Then you get to dick around with infinite ammo rocket launchers.

me too, infinite nukes pouring out of the Experimental MIRV is a hoot.

If I beat a game through fair and square a few times round it can get a little tedious, so a few cheats later and I am having fun again. But I will always beat a game without cheating atleast once.

I have no problem with cheating in a single player game. To cheat in multiplayer games is unforgivable.
