Ok this thing, this meme, this, this mounter MUST DIE!
I mean either the people of the Escapist are just dumb pricks(I strongly hope note, because this is the smartest community I've found), or they just enjoy killing time while talking to random people on the internet about disjointed topics, just trying to "confuse" them.

Now that I let some steam out, please believe me when I say that there is no such thing as a robot/software program that can have an intelligent conversation with you(there are some Japanese prototypes, but they only understand simple commands and cannot carry a conversation).

Programmer wise, it would be like insanely hard if not impossible to create an AI capable of conversation let alone a decent one.
But it's really easy to just pair to people wanting to talk to said robot on the internet. Then, each of the 2 people would see the responses of the other as coming from a robot.
I'm not to good with worlds so I'll give an example:

Normal conversation:
Jack: Hello!
Jim: Hi!
Jack: What is the square root of pi?
Jim: It's approximately 1.77245385.
Jack: WoW!
Jim: You're silly.
Jack: You're quite smart.
Jim: Yes I am.

And so on.

Cleverbot mode conversation from Jack's view:
Jack: Hello!
Cleverbot: Hi!
Jack: What is the square root of pi?
Cleverbot : It's approximately 1.77245385.
Jack: WoW!
Cleverbot : You're silly.
Jack: You're quite smart.
Cleverbot : Yes I am.

Cleverbot mode conversation from Jim's view:
Cleverbot: Hello!
Jim: Hi!
Cleverbot: What is the square root of pi?
Jim: It's approximately 1.77245385.
Cleverbot: WoW!
Jim: You're silly.
Cleverbot: You're quite smart.
Jim: Yes I am.

Ok now please explain to me, do you really believe this hoax? Or are you just so bored that you go to "chatbot" anyway?
And finally and most importantly, can we PLEASE PUT THESE CLEVERBOT THREADS TO REST?
Thank you!

It is fascinating for a program to learn from it's experience.

Skynet will be born from it.

I really don't believe it matches real people together. Why? Because the conversations aren't coherent at all. Compare a chat with a real person on a website like Omegle to the Cleverbot. One makes sense, one doesn't.

.... i dont get you?

Dude so what, it always learns of what people say. Like that bot were it asks you questions and it guesses who you are thinking of, it learns.

That doesnt make it bad?

I think it's pretty cool. I don't think it's really intelligent, but I know that it responds to at least a degree of reason.

When I say this thread I thought, *If the OP mentions Skynet he deserves a kick in the balls* but you raise an interesting point. Unfortunately I must agree with WrongSprite, If it was another person the the spelling would be extremely poor. That and it might make just some sense.

Of course it's not a hoax you utter muppet, I've been to a lecture from the people who helped create a similar one. It's by no means perfect, but it works on a basic level.

And that bit is a load of rubbish.

It's hardly perfect, intelligent conversation, it has it flaws.

Also, notice how the spelling is always good? How theres no "hi how r u, sxy"

This if anything is proof that its not other people.

You are the idiot, please don't insult my intelligence again.
That's like how they have those contests to fool people into thinking a chatbot is a real person the winner one year made his program intentionally add spelling mistakes.

OT: Of course it's a program! Maybe you should read up on this stuff before posting a bunch of misinformation!

You just proved that it is in fact a sophisticated program. You think it's another person while it isn't. Because of you it passed the Turing test.

I had a lecture on multi-agent systems and artificial intelligence, and we had chatterbots as an example. As NnyTheV said, the Turing Test was developed to see if AI could imitate human conversation, thus showing what a normal conversationalist would call "intelligence".
Let alone the fact that the ability to talk isn't neccessary to be seen as intelligent (e.g. autistic people, children, sociopaths etc.), but there hasn't been an AI that has passed the test. Yet.

When an AI learns to understand what it's saying, instead of blindly filling in the blanks to a predetermined scheme depending on the other persons input, that's when AI gets intelligent IMHO.

Also, yay for science!

Apparently not? x.x

Yours is the first I've seen in days, if not weeks :\

Also, why are you bothered by it? It's a fascinating piece of technology. And yes, if you ask it stupid questions or are trying to figure out it's a machine, you'll realise it soon enough, but it's capable of some genuinely interesting conversations. They're not perfect of course, but it's still a great step forward.

I just saw one today(well the other day, because I guess the day kinda went by), and an other one a month ago(if I recall right). And that just made me lose it.
And my major problem with cleverbot is that I strongly doubt it's a program/robot(I may be right I may be wrong, but something I really have to accept is that nothing/nobody is going to change after this little fail of a topic or any other one). I mean call me a non-believer/fool/pessimist but I just can't rap my mind around how one could program such a thing as cleverbot. I mean considering the nature of things, it would be loads easier to just make a human-human match-up and fool each other into thinking that their partner is cleverbot. And every once in a while the partner's are changed to get a certain "flaw" for the program.
But that's just skeptical little old me talking.

Eh, I should just leave all this to rest and move on, as you suggested.

Oh, and a little of topic:Now I know how atheists feel like, when they constantly keep saying they don't believe in something and think it's a hoax, and the rest of the world just goes:"yep, he lost it and can't see the truth". Although I really don't want to get in any religious discussions now.

It's a program you silly, and it's not intelligent in any way.

Seriously, if it was people, tits or GTFO would pop up. Also, there would occasionally be a non-terrible practically one sided conversation.

Well, if you want to prove cleverbot's a program, just ask it to copy/paste something your write. It will never do it.

See also, the concept of the Chinese Room. But I am pretty sure you may have already heard of that.

Wait, the application is actually making you doubt whether it's a human or software? Sorry, missed that part, it's kinda ridiculous to consider it talking to a person as it's very easy to guide Cleverbot into revealing it's software. For a start, it NEVER says anything until you do, it only replies (very obviously calculatingly and on a timer+search time) and never says more than one line at a time, clearly showing it's not matchmaking software to begin with, unless you actually believe there's someone out there 'hired' to work the site, which actually makes you a lot more similar to a religious person than an atheist.

The answers are also usually easily predicted, not in a way you'd predict a person's response, it's simply a logical way to implement it. If you asked a person the value of pi, they'd also either round it to the usual 2 decimals or tell you to go fuck yourself :)

The software for it is also not at all impossible to program, or even overly hard. The reason you're not seeing a more practical application is because of the flaws... any practical application of the algorithm(s) would likely require them to have a lot better success rate. But all it really requires is smart algorithm database building. You tell it something, it has an algorithm to validate how likely the information is true (and likely waiting until it's told that enough times to believe it's true, perhaps check the information with other people using it by asking them a question).

The fact you're actually doubting it's software is cool though, shows how far the potential can go :)
