I would be happy if they caught the hackers and either used them to improve security or sent them to prison. I don't really mind if we get compensation or not but it would be a good way for them to get some good PR.

But what type of compensation could they give?
I really don't think they could just give out money or anything so what, would they give us PS+ for free for a couple of months or something?

I'm not gonna be crying if they DON'T give us anything, but they probably should... they fucked up ROYAL. after getting PSN back up, getting back on our good sides should be their first priority. they can start with a sincere apology, followed up with the beefing up of their security. then maybe send us something like a free bit of DLC or an Avatar or something. they don't have to, but they probably should, just to make up for almost leaking our credit card numbers, email addresses, passwords, names, and addresses to some random dickweed living in mom's basement.

I would say PS+ people and DCUO people should get money back.

I think only plus users should get compensated.
All PSN users had their data stolen, which is what the OP is asking about.

Does anyone else think that sony should provide some sort of compensation for it's users for the risk of private data being taken? seems only fair to me but what does the good men and women of the escapist think?

It would be a nice incentive, but I don't want to sound like an entitled prick asking for more from Sony right after this considerable mishap and damage to the PSN.
What makes you "entitled" by asking someone who's wronged you for compensation?
The people who stole the data are the ones who've wronged people.

OT: Not really. Everyone's always out for a quick buck (that's why that moron's trying to file a class-action lawsuit), the only thing that needs to be done is for people to get a new credit or debit card.

An inconvenience, but they'd go out of business if they then payed everyone a sum that's worth receiving if you're trying to bleed compensation from someone.

I imagine they'll let people have a free something or rather though.

I'd like an apology, and to be able to claim my copy of Portal 2 on Steam through my PS3. I can't get the latter, and attempting to contact Steam regarding the issue has been met with 4 days of silence. That's all, for me.

i use a visa issued by one of the nationwide banks in my country. i asked them if i should bar my visa card and they said they hadnt barred any cards yet, but that i could get it barred if i wanted too. So i asked for clarification on what their recommendation was. They said they were following the situation closely and werent going to bar any cards yet. any cashloss i would have THEY would refund me.

Any personal information you can find on anyones facebook or yellow/white pages. Im not really scared. Its not that you had put your social security number on there.

Anyway, since the vast majority of the PSN users missplace the blame on Sony, they are forced to give a small patch on our bruises.

Shit happens people

Well, I would certainly like to get free stuff to compensate me for not being able to go on PSN or play Uncharted 2 online, but I think it should only be something like a free downloadable game or 2. I also do not know how fair that would be to Sony, but it would certainly generate some good will with the player base, so it could be a sound business move.

I just want to be able to play co-op. It's baffling how simply using the code from the packaging won't get you the Steam version. It's so frustrating that I have everything I need to get the PC version and I'm blocked by something that I can't control.

Just a free theme or something would do, I only have 3 dollars on my account, what are hackers going to do with that?
TO THE ICECREAM PARLOR!

OT: Don't expect anything fantastic, be sure they'll update their defences or something and maybe you'll get some shitty game for free (mindhack I'm sure)

They also have your credit card details if you've entered them, so it's not just $3, it's however much you own.

I don't think they should be provided compensation for having their info not secure, but they should be compensated for any money lost.

Sony don't owe us anything 'cos PSN is free but they will give us something as a way of getting some good PR back.
I would say they owe us more than an explanation at this point.
And if this breach is the only reason someone might sign up for credit monitoring, I think they should be compensated.

I already had one so I only had to change a few passwords but if this prompted me to sign up to one, I would be joining that class action lawsuit.
Why? It's not like Sony set there security as the number 4 as a password and that was it. If hackers want to hack something they will, blaming Sony for people hacking it is stupid to me.

Would be like blaming your car company if somebody broke into it and stole your radio.
No, it's not like that at all.
As they decided to have such an elaborate online component, they do need to have some sort of assurance to the users that the data entered is safe. If they were unable to do so, they should've set everything up differently... which they could have. BUT, they were more interested in making it easier for us to make little microtransactions on PSN and in the end, they couldn't back it up.

If we are able to sue the hackers, we should but we shouldn't forget who laid out everything (including the challenge) to them.

^^this.
if they gave out DLC, they'd have to pay the companies who make the DLC.
if they gave out money... well, there's more people on PSN than there are in the whole of the UK, so unless everyone settles for about a penny (if even that), giving out cash would flat-out bripple Sony financially.
PS+ costs no money for them to maintain. They'd lose the profit that would have been brought in by subscription fees, but they were fine before PS+, so it shouldn't hurt them too much. plus, some people may end up buying PS+ subscriptions as a result. if anyone from Sony reads this, I highly recommend you do this. It'd help repair your public image (last seen bleeding out in a gutter somewhere) and might even net you some extra cash after the trial ends. do it.

Yes, and also Sony by not adequately protecting the data.

If someone robs a bank guarded by only a 90 year old security guard with a BB gun, and the bank had no vault, yeah you blame the bank robber (if you can find him) but it's also the banks fault for not having enough protection.
