So there are a few MMOs that are coming out for the console as well as the pc, DC universe online, champions online and the Agency are the most noteworthy. So I ask you this; does the mmo work on the console?

Consoles not only are way too limited on controls, but also you can't upgrade the hardware for with each new demanding expansion.

Every class in said game would need to be heavily simplified compared to ones in many MMO's.

However, i think an MMOFPS like Planetside could potentially do very, very well on a console if done right and with decent server hardware to lower serverside lag as much as possible.

But it'd need to be the most polished MMO to be released. There'd be a ton of testing and feedback to be done.

It is possible to rig up a controller for an mmo. I did it with my 360 controller for WoW using the bumpers as modifiers you can have space for more keys then you might think.

Now it definitely was not pretty or easy to use, but it was possible to play like that. But yeah for it to be something that would be practical an mmo for a console would have to be pretty simple.

If it were to not charge anything but the (in 360's case) Xbox Gold membership, I would be cool with a console MMO.

I'll agree with the control issue, but if the designers of the game are building the game for the system, I doubt they would make anything that makes an upgrade necessary unless they were in cahoots with the System Company itself.

No, not if they bring the complex menu systems, the boring grinding, and the monthly fees. Computers can keep that shit.
Well said comrade, now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go play an FPS , which totally doesn't involve killing the same enemy hundreds of times.

I all honesty though, I've really lost any taste for MMO's.

Also, look at WoW. The required minimum specifications have barely changed since it was released. They changed the necessary RAM to 512mb, and that was before the first expansion.

Plus, there would be a significant amount of extra usable developer time due to being able to safely assume that all the players as using the exact same hardware. There's no need to worry that some Graphics Card or Processor or Sound Card or any PC component will throw a hissy fit with your game, as you can design it knowing the exact hardware everyone will use.

Lets throw a little wrench in this discussion with an additional aspect; cross console play.

The logicistics of getting the different consoles to communicate with each other would be hard enough. Getting the hardware companies involved to agree with it would be even harder.

There'd be plenty of players without such a feature.

They did it with Shadowrun.

Was that not with Console > PC? And said PC's run on an operating system owned by the same company that makes the Console?

the fact that you can mod your mmo on pc is where it shines but if done right there may be little difference

"Only with certain MMO genres"

As mentioned above, it would really only work well with things like Planetside.
