There isn't any more they can do on this hardware to make it prettier, I mean the HD systems only have 512MB of RAM total.

4GB of RAM is common place.
Well, to be fair, there's a difference between the way a console and a PC uses RAM. There's a reason good computers still can't run PS2 emulators very well.

It always seemed silly to me. Whenever I got into a debate, it rapidly escalated into a heated argument and when it did I just said it's just a console, not something to end a friendship over.

My current laptop with an i3 processor at 2.23Ghz and a midrange ATI graphics card is able to play PS2 emulators great. 720p at 60 vps without sound glitches in most games. Emulating hardware is very inefficent, have you seen the Android SDKs virtual phone? Its horribly slow.

The difference between how the console and PC use their memory is that one has to deal with an OS for general purpose things, while one is made for one purpose. Upping console memory would make for much better experiences in games, better textures/ less texture popping, faster load times, more memory means you can do more pretty things in graphics. If we have more memory for graphics we can also finally get out of the low FOVs common in games now to get better framerates without optimizing the engine.

Nonsense, if we can't argue about a person's preferences and the real life circumstances that may lead to them owning the machine that they do... how will we be able to inform them that they're wrong, and how much superior we are to them and why they should stop being such stinky stupid faces?

The issue with PS2 emulators have very little to do with RAM and everything to do with the processor's architecture. The PS2 ran multiple chips simultaneously which is tough to emulate on single core processors, and even tougher to emulate the tight synchronization on multiple cores.

As for RAM, consoles have very efficient operating systems, whereas PCs have OS that take up a heftier amount of memory. But even then, when I'm running Win7 with Gamebooster, it only takes up about 300MB of RAM. Which is measly compared to the 4GB RAM setup that's quite common.

Yeah, I didn't really talk about it, but PC gamers will be elitist from now till the end of time. I wish I could spend 1000+ dollars on a gaming computer and be able to download mods and stuff, but I can't and I just have to accept that.
If you're spending $1000+ on your PC... you're doing it wrong. Yeah, your budget can spin out uncontrollably if you decide to pack in dual GPUs and SSDs, but people usually spend around $500 on a new rig and even less when upgrading.

Last I remember, a PS3 when released used to cost $600, and the big ass HD TVs people tend to buy for consoles aren't cheap either. And considering PC gamers can buy PC games super cheap from DD sales, costs are recouped pretty fast.

PC gaming isn't worth the investment.
To you, maybe. But for someone who likes strategy games, high-end simulators, MMOs (before you scoff fashionably, I'm talking about titles like EVE and Planetside), indie games, older console titles ranging from Megadrive to PS2 and ridiculously cheap games, it's well worth the investment.

OT: Funnily enough, I don't mind this console generation holding back the graphical capabilities of gaming. It has resulted in me not upgrading my rig since 2007. :D

And honestly, there'll always be PC games pushing CPU/GPU limits, AAA games be damned.

Well, I don't consider the old time console wars to be that stupid, since bits actually made a difference to what you could do.

But now there's no point to say a console is better because of graphics, unless you cannot live with yourself at a slightly lower reoslution. Consoles are too different now.

Remove the "nowadays". The wars have always been dumb. That said, I will never buy anything made by apple, but I dont begrudge other people for doing it.

Consolewars is a misnomer. It's a COMPETITION. Competition is good and nothing to get so worked up about.

Even the fanboy arguments are entertaining. One side may even be better than the rest, but most importantly, promoting one box is just free speech.

Iran and Iraq warred for ages... In fact most of the different Arabic sects fight, quarrel and argue all the time... Unless there are Westerners around... Then all the sects who cannot tollerate any non-muslims (Not all of them) will put aside there differences and hate westerners together.

This is like us gamers. Now we have the ongoing battle with casual games, and casual gamers. This has softened our elitist mindsets that has caused us to war the last few years, and re kindled into us being collaberatively elitist against the newcomers. The problem is games are so popular now to a much wider audience, (just look at WOW. Not all of those now gamers were before playing that!) that now the casual gamers are mixing alot more with the hardcore elite, even on forums, and has dampened the waring spirit. We are no longer an in-figting people... we are a peacefull society!

Man I have to stop playing RPG's/wargames, mind is completely addled...

Exactly, macs are the better system likely for the cost it costs to make them, but if I was to put the money needed for a mac into a pc, the pc will be better.

*reads first few comments* oh yeah, forgot most of the Escapist are PC elitists. What really sucks is I'm one of the few which still genuinely care for the Wii as an actual console.

My friends hate it, my enemies too. Man, it sucks being one of few defenders for Nintendo.

....

You know, other than Operation Rainfall. Where's my F**KING Xenoblade, Nintendo!?!?

Wanking aside, these wars are always pretentious. Also, it seems hypocritical for PC elitists to call Consoles stupid. Isn't PC a console too? wait, isn't the PC where the term: "Console" originate from?

Think about that for a minute. the biggest mistake PC gamers made these last 20 years is thinking their different from us TV based gamers.

funnily enough Raiyan 1.0- EVE isn't that different from other mmos and strategy games just aren't for everyone(console gamers) that said indie games are also availible for xbox live arcade/psn the truth is PC gaming is dead/dying for several years, consoles own the market and new physical games for pc aren't easy to come by it being in the back of the line for releases

Console wars have been going on forever, and they've been stupid since they started.
And they won't go away anytime soon.
this, but it even more stupid now.
since in ye olden days ( EI before some of the member ship here was born, or old enough to hold a controller) it was about exclusives, and >.> bullshit marketing like 'blast processing'.

now, most the really good games are multi platform and the exclusives are meh as i see it, so it really boils down to what you want your system to do.

Console Wars have always been bullshit.

Consoles are like forks and spoons. To eat ice cream, you need a spoon. To eat spaghetti, you need a fork. The ice cream isn't good because you eat it with a spoon. It's good because you like ice cream. The same goes for spaghetti and forks. Whether you eat with with a fork or spoon, it doesn't matter compared to the food that's on the plate.

So, whenever somebody argues about consoles, think of them as arguing about forks and spoons and they'll just look really fucking silly.

If someone replies to this with a half-assed joke about sporks/chopsticks/finger foods, I will eat a dozen Christian babies.

I don't like consoles anymore, but I look at them with respect. I'm not throwing bile at my friends for using the PS3 or the 360, or to anybody for that matter. I do belive that the PC is better in every sense, but this isn't the thread of "preach about PC gaming".

Yes, console wars have always been stupid and it may have worked in the 90's, but after the last gen's consoles, it really didn't matter, especially this generation as both the 360 and PS3 are pretty much identical, the only differences they have are exclusives and that's it.

A bit silly nowadays?

"Console Wars" for this generation was always silly. It worked in the Sega Vs Nintendo as it was the mascots going up against each other... who now work for the Umbrella Corporation, I mean Nintendo.

People who attack other people because they have a different choice in consoles have issues that only a shrink could sort out.

Every debate over a piece of hardware that you didn't make or design and who's only connection to is that you bought it is stupid. People need to find better uses with their time then being dickheads over how great their lump of plastic is whether it is an X-box, PS3, Wii, or PC, or anything else.
