I have been in this situation and to say I could do it without thinking is BS. I was thinking a thousand miles per hour trying to talk my way out of it, wondering if I could do this, etc. When it came down to it I almost killed them till someone pulled me off and I felt terrible afterwards because I was so willing to choke them to death. Stuff like that can change you for the worse if your not careful.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
No one knows what they would do in that situation, I would prefer to think that I could neutralise the threat without killing but I have no clue if I would kill or not to save my own life.

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
Of course. Nobody threatens my family and gets away with it. I'd be more likely to kill to protect them then to save myself.

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
Depends what you mean by ranged weapon. I don't handle guns very often (unless you count l4d) and as such I don't believe that I'd be able to kill at a distance, but again you never know until you're in the situation

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
Depending on the stranger, it would probably make me stop and think harder about what I was about to do, but it wouldn't affect me anywhere near as much as having a family member on the line.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
A: Yes, though I would feel some guilt.
Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
A: Definitely, any doubts would leave my mind if my family was involved.
Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
A: No.
Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
A; It would only hasten my reaction.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
I would hope so, but I would probably prefer to cripple the person (well, I would try). Its much more ironic, and, could be considered a sadistic mercy, which could be a much greater 'victroy'.
Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
Probably not.
Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
I distain physical violence, so I would probably resort to fire arms, but would do what I could with what I have.
Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
Probably not.

I would like to say I can predict what I would do in a situation, however, I cannot perfectly predict anything, even myself, without first experiencing something at least similar to it, or whatever it is in the first place.

Because the gun control fanatics don't need anything else to get worked up about. Having the "mowing down everyone in the streets" option does not help make the case that gun owners are for the most part responsible people. If killing another human being isn't emotionally scarring, then there's an issue, maybe if your life is on the line I can understand. But not just random genocides.
Depends on how you feel about certain individuals of the human race. I certainly wouldn't kill anyone who's leading a normal life (even guys like Kotick, I believe he could be taught a lesson), but living where I am, any regard for thieves/rapist/killers and other degenerates as human beings is long gone.
Unfortunatly said degenerates don't exactly wear large neon signs saying "I AM A RAPIST/THIEF/KILLER" on there backs. Would make life easier though.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.

Yes

Q: Would having a friend or family member's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?

Depends on the friend... Seriously though It would make me hesitate several nanosecodns less

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?

The up-close would depend on the manner of how my life is in danger but I'm sure I could do it.

Either that or I beat somebody to death with a 9-Iron

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?

Depends, is this an unavoidable situation? If so I am unsure whether I would risk my life for a complete stranger

Ive thought of this many times and after being confronted with what felt like such a situation when 'x' broke into my household i realised the what i am capable of.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
Yes. Easily.

Nop. not at all.
Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
No. Death is still death. Its black and white really. You or Him. no other choices.
Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
No. if he's stupid enough to get in this situation too, its his fault.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
To be honest? Yes, if push comes to shove instict will kick in and I'll do it.

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
Yes, because it wouldn't feel so selfish to kill somebody if I did it for the benefit of somebody else.

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
Yes, a ranged weapon would make it easier.

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
Yes, because it wouldn't feel so selfish to kill somebody if I did it for the benefit of somebody else, like I said.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
A:Yes I could.

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
A:This might actually make me shot faster.

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
A:Man an up close shot would be so nasty and I would have to take a super long shower after but still I would

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
A:Same as number 2

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
A: Yes, but I can't really know until I'm in that situation. What makes me believe that I can is that I'm pretty indifferent to human lives. When it comes to it though, I'm not sure I would actually WANT to save myself.
Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
A: I don't really know.. I don't really care about them anyway.
Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
A: That is something I can't know for sure.
Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
A: Yes. A stranger is a friend you haven't met yet, right? and if that's wrong, you can always correct your mistake later.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
A: Yes and I wouldn't even have to think about it much, if someone is trying to kill my I'm not holding back

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
A: I'd probably kill him faster ( as in choose to kill him not actually giving him a quick death because I wouldn't be satisfied with that )

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
A: Yes cause I wouldn't want to get blood all over my clothes, but other then that .. no

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
A: No and why would it ?

Ye I'm a cold hearted cold blooded bastard when someone's trying to kill me, so if someone would ever want to kill me I hope for his sake he succeeds because otherwise his death will not be painless.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
A: I'd like to say "yes", but a more honest answer would be "probably". 'Tis hard to say.

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
A: It would make me more likely to kill.

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
A: Absolutely. Killing someone from 300 metres away with a rifle would lot easier then strangling them.

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
A: Not sure. Depends on the stranger. Call me sexist, but I think I'd be more likely to defend a female stranger then a male one.

Also, I think most of you people saying "oh yes, definitely, I'd shoot the bastard with a smile" are full of crap.

This is one of those threads that I can't answer until it actually happens. There's probably a saying along the lines of: "A man is not brave until he has stood his ground". Or something.

1st i want to make it clear that as a student of Philosophy i truly believe that ther is NO ethical argument for killing another person, it is ALWAYS going to be wrong. That said, i also believe that my life or the life of those around me is threatened, i would be prepared to kill in order to defend myself and others.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.

A:In the circumstances where my life was endangered by another person, i would be able to take that persons life. I would try to find ways to defend myself "non-lethally" (made difficult when u have no training in martial skills nor very physically strong) , but when push comes to shove i imagine i wouldnt hesitate to defend myself with lethal force.

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?

A:Yes, i imagine i would be less lenient. When its only myself thats in danger im more in control of the situation and can therefore afford to think of ways to subdue the "BadGuy" (LOL XP!, sorry), but when other lives, especially my family, are involved i would probably feel like i would need to use lethal force more urgently, to prevent their deaths.

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?

A:Yes, strangely enough i think i might feel worse using a gun than close-up strangle or knife. its just the concept for me, that with close-up weapons your opponent has a chance to fight for their life and an opportunity to surrender if things are going bad for them in the fight. With a gun, once the trigger is pulled, its over, no fighting chance and no opportunity to surrender. And even if i hit a limb (never held a gun, would prbly go for torso, less chance of missing, bullets are designed to be so destructive that their chances of survival would be minimal.

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?

A:Like when i answered the second question, if lives other than my own being threatened i would have no control over their actions, and i believe i would be more quick to go for the kill than if it was only myself. Obviously i love my family more than a stranger, but i dont think i would act too differently in being ready to kill a person threatening my life and the life of someone else, stranger or not.

Very interesting thread and Q's. Like i said, i firmly believe that killing another person can never be defended, but i am also not so naive that i cant imagine situations where someone would feel the need to kill someone in order to defend themselves and/or others. But this is a personal situation, not a political one, right?

Same here. I can't answer until I'm actually put on the spot. It all depends on circumstance you see. if it were to happen RIGHT NOW I don't think I could do it (mostly because I'm feeling a bit depressed, and I've also just had breakfast). But if I was ready for it, or I had been running/ fighting all day, then perhaps. Adrenaline can make you do things you never dreamed of.

Interesting thread, I've often asked myself the same, so here's the answers to some soulsearching:

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
A: Easily. If it comes to it and I'm left with no other option, I'll take the life.

Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
A: Not only me but others too? That makes the choice easier, doesn't it?

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
A: No. I have no remorse. I'm in the computer lab right now. I'll look around for 3 seconds, then tell you what I could kill people with:
-Individual books
-Individual computerstuff, monitors, keyboards
-Thrashcan
-Coatrack
-Bookshelves
-Perforator (Heavy one)
-Yards and yards of wires
-Keys in my pocket, if that counts
-Stapler
I would happily use them in case of emergency.

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
A: No, it'll be easier to use non-lethal tactics though.

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
I would try to immobilize him with a particular attack, but if he was really mad, i would shoot him.
Q: The Bad Guy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
most definitely. i would definitely kill him. with only a small spark of mercy to spare him.
Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
i would prefer guns but with a melee weapon i may not be able to kill let alone hurt.
Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
it would force me and him to work together and kick ass! but seriously, we would both kick the shit out of him

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
Probably. It really depends on the scenario. Regardless, I'd like to avoid the encounter.

Q: The Bad Guy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
Yes. I'd react quicker.

Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
Probably, at least to some extent. Although, what kind of self defense puts you a long range from the guy?

Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
I'd try to save him/her.

I'm in the army...

Q: Do You think you could take a life to defend your own.
Yes (permitting circumstances - ie legally nothing else I could've done)
Q: The BadGuy is threatening not just your life, but your family's. Does this alter your reaction?
No.
Q: Would the difference between the up-close kill, and the point and click of a ranged weapon have a difference on you?
Close up kills would be more justified. Besides I've never been good at shooting over 300m, an enemy sniper would probably hit me before I hit him.
Q: Would having a stranger's life on the line with yours make you change your reaction?
No.
