This is in no way related to movie or video game critics, but to other critics.

Recently i explained a game idea to a couple of friends in a YouTube stream... (which obviously isn't a really good place to discuss things rationally but, whatever) and they started telling me that i should change it, like including moral choices, allowing the player to create their own custom character, choosing sides, including correct explanations for magic, or "magick" as she called it (which came from a girl who i know is wiccan and is obviously how spells are made in real life but that's not important at all) and because i wouldn't accept them, they accused me of having my head shoved so far up my ass that i can't listen to reason.

Now I actually want to hear from others.

Have you ever had a rather excellent idea for a game, movie, business, comic book, food idea, book, anything at all and then have naysayers butt in and tell you that your idea will fail unless you do this, this and this?

I would like to hear from you Escapists.

That;s the point of critism, to try to make the idea better through negativity. Embrace the hate, you might get a good idea from it.
Well it wasn't really negative. i just had a rather excellent idea, and these naysayers just burst in and tell me my own creative idea is folly and is going to not even sell a single copy.

It's often hard to see the flaws in your own work. Perhaps they may have had some valid criticisms.

Anyways, I like good critics. If people didn't criticize my wok throughout life I would have never improved.

I think Stephen Donaldson can relate all too well to this.. When he was first trying to get his novels, the Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant, published, waaaaaaay back in the early 80s or so, he got repeatedly turned down because people automatically assumed nobody would want to read another series revolving around the use of a ring as a magic talisman, because that somehow made it a 'Tolkien clone'.
(which is a load of crap, really - the ring in LOTR could just as easily have been a necklace, or a gem, or a bracelet, or just about any other fancy bit of jewelery, while the ring in the Thomas Covenant novels HAD to be a ring - but I'll stop here before I start ranting)
Now, Mr Donaldson is a widely famous and popular author, and considered by myself and many others to be one of the greatest fantasy authors of all time - specifically because he DIDN'T try to please the critics.

The short version: Criticism is not always helpful, don't listen to it unless they actually offer a logical basis for it.

but it was about constant things in video games today, character customization, a karma meter and moral choices.

now about moral choices. i quote from Yahtzee "Moral Choice Systems in games need to drink paint and retard themselves out of existance" i agree with that, because all it does boil down to is 2 choices.

People will do that. If you wanted constructive critism I suggest getting it from someone you trust, like a friend or family members.
yeah... i don't even know why i decided to explain it on a YouTube stream.

i don't think it was completely logical.
some of it was... but it wasn't what i had in mind for this game.

No, but that's largely why I don't share my ideas very often anymore.
On the other hand, a little constructive criticism isn't always bad; although I suggest you not seek it anywhere on the Internet.

I watch yahtzee regularly.... so yes not to mention like rotten tomatoes and other critic sites especially newspaper critiques tho. They usually are too in depth and focus on things the normal consumer won't give a shit about.

Nah, what you should have done is do it the way I would've done it and not your way, because other people's ideas are always better than your own.

More seriously, stick to your own ideas, but don't bite off more that you can chew.

Those critics seem to want a different type of game. Explain your ideas to people who enjoy the type of game you have an idea for, and listen to their criticism.

The critics you spoke to seem to want an open rpg. It would be good to explain the kind of game you want to make, and therefore what you won't change. Then, accept criticism on what seems to fit into the game your making.

And good luck with your game!
