It shouldn't be done. If the Xbox Live players were in contact with Nintendo WFC's users, there'd be a lot of crying children and a lot of Wiimotes hurled across rooms.
But...Xbox players don't use a wii controller!
heh....

OP: Shadowrun on the PS2/PC did it. But it was a pretty big failure as the PC users dominated the PS2 players. (That's not meant to sound elitist!) Eventually the game stopped because there was almost no PS2 players.
But the Wii Remore was recently made compatible with the PS3, so they could join in.

Cross-Platform would actuall be a very good idea, from a developers standpoint it kind of rules out exclusive DLC because it'd completely screw up the communities. From a player standpoint, well, yeah as a PC Gamer, I know full well I have an extreme advantage over console players. So, in that light, I'd also want dedicated servers, with a server browers, where you could set 'PC only' or 'Console only' or 'Unrestricted'. So everyone could either play together, or play separately, but get the same game, nonetheless.
This. If you want to play an game with just your console siblings, go for it. Set up a server and have a ball. Likewise for PC gaming.

While I agree that a PC gamer using a keyboard and mouse has an advantage, I don't think it should matter. If you buy a game for your console, then really you should be prepared to deal with the natural disadvantages that come from the controller. Likewise, if you buy a game for the PC, then you shouldn't have a game crippled by your preference. If you had the option of a top end PC and a console in your house, would you buy CODBLOPS for the PC or the console? If you picked the console over the PC, then you have made a choice in your preference. Same for the PC.

I am rambling a little bit.

Basically I am trying to say you takes your pick, you makes your choice. If a game came out with PCs vs consoles, gimping the PC gamers would mean PC gamers would be less likely to play it. I say let them all frag one another, and as the old saying goes: "It's just a game."

I was replying to someone who was doubting the truthfulness to a rumored face off between PC and console gamers due to UT3 not being GFWL. I have no idea what the hell you're going on about.

I do, I just don't want a cross platform FPS. But then again, that's what most multiplayer games are today anyways...

Eh. I don't know. I think that it's really about the controllers and I think that some controllers might be better suited for a certain game than others - giving some players a disadvantage.

But, hey, it's an alright idea - just not something console developers would want to do.
Maybe, but if you own the console and the game, you should be pretty damn efficient with that controller, so I don't think it would matter at all.
Oh it would, it really would. Look up shadowrun. This is another of the topics that has been endlessly debated, and probably has spawned quite a lot of probations/bans. And probably will in this thread too.

I'll say just that while I dont think there is any difference in the intelligence between a console gamer and a PC gamer (I have all platforms; owned an xbox360 which rroded, I have a ps3 and I have a PC), there can be little doubt that certain gametypes are very much favorable to play with certain controllers.

If you have another opinion I can only conclude that you have played too little on one of the platforms to know what you are talking about. And let me expressly say that I do not mean to be disrespectful or flame or anything of the sort. And I prematurely apologize if you take offense, that is not my intention. I simply cannot see how it is possible to come to another conclusion.

Also: read this quote :>

true, but if there was a leader board based on what platform your on, and see which platform has the best players, you could settle the console wars a little more quickly. And PC gamers, the reason your "better" is because you have a mouse. if you turn down its speed to match our controlers, and then you beat us, youll have the proof you need. but untill that happens, just keep those comments about us "consoletards" to yourself.
The major problem you purposefully overlook, and what makes you what they say you are, is that you are willing to settle with crappy controls for games that require something better. The degree of speed capable from the peripherals is almost a negligible factor. Using an analog stick means a huge degradation in fine control, and that is before you incorporate how loose and crappy the current implementations are.

The game developers even have to compensate for how inaccurate the controller is by making the game easier or adding features like aim-assist because it is often impossible to move any less than 10 pixels at a time. Since the mouse has an infinite plane of movement, it is easy to point where you want and when. The analog stick just keep going as long as you press it, so you have to fumble around the dead spot in the center to really aim precisely on anything not 5 virtual feet wide. It really shouldn't be that much of a mystery why console'people' are put down for their gaming habits and also the repercussions thereof.
Thanks for posting my usual answer in a more articulate way :)

theyve tried this with pc's and consoles and it just ended up with the pc players absolutely raping the console players. also the game shadowrun you will find that the pc players have added lag on their mouse which was confirmed by their devs and the consoles have better then normal aimbots. the devs of the game said this was needed for balance purposes

I dont want to be sat back on my Xbox or whatever playing a nice clean game of mulitplayer when all of a sudden someone with a mouse and keybord comes in and starts kicking ass and taking names.

I would prefere to play with people who are using the same equipment I have, all joysticks OR all mouse and keybord NOT BOTH.

It just makes it unfare if someone has a mouse and keybord and everyone else is using shitty joysticks.

Ever played Shadowrun?
Exactly what I was thinking. Well done, psyker.

*Calls the Ordo Hereticus*

OP: Sure, it could be fun to get to play against people who aren't on XBL. I might bump into some nicer people, or friends who don't have an xbox.
But I wouldn't want the people on PSN have to suffer meeting and listening to the people on XBL >.>
Oh but then the console war can have a sicological element!
If those PS3 owners heard a fraction of are tunts and insults they would smash there console with a hammer! :p

But that would be unfair to Wii owners because they can't turn around as fast or aim as accurately as a controller.

noty, the playstation 3 microphone thing is much rarer than it is on xbox live, and it's inevitable that 95% of the time people who have a microphone should not have a microphone.
