Could/Should cross platform titles (COD, TF2) to play with other platforms in online matches?

example:
If you have Team Fortress 2 for the xbox ps3, should those people be allowed to play with the ps3 owners of TF2?

EDIT: you can talk about Non-FPS games too. They were the only two examples that sprung to mind instantly

Theoretically yes, until all the PC TF2 players completely wipe the Consoloids with their achievement weapons.

Unless Valve has found a way to fix that?

Or do you mean Console v. Console rather than Console v. PC?

Console vs Console is fine, but I doubt you could provide console vs PC without the PC players having a clear advanatge.

Hard to say, FPS, for example, works better on PC than 360, so it would be a but unfair with the controls, cause the PC owners can then aim better than the 36o players.

360 vs PS3 would wrok fine. PC vs console would be a slaughter. I'd be interested to see COD4 on Wii vs COD4 on 360 vs COD4 on PC though.

Not in Shadorun. (which both PC and console players can play) The console players tend to tend to have the advantage. Granted no one on the PC plays it anymore.

In theory it's a great idea.

In practical terms it's quite difficult though. The biggest hurdle by far would be getting M.Soft and Sony to allow cross connection between their systems and matchmaking. Beyond that the next biggest problem would be players insulting each other, they're bad enough on one system, imagine finding the other team were predominantly on the 'other' service.
From a hardware standpoint there's little difficulty, it's no different than two brands of pc communicating with each other after all.

PC to console would be largely impossible*. The amount of custom mods, patches and so forth that PC gamers get/use almost without noticing would give them a massive advantage and probably crash the console player's game. Console games have a very low tolerance of that kind of thing and they'd just boot the pc players automatically for having non standard code in their games. Even if that code was just custom server sounds clips and skins.

*I'm thinking abuot FPS games in main here, other types might be easier.

Seems like a good idea to me, but only if it's on 360 and PS3. There's too much difference in performance and hardware for the Wii and PC to get involved.

Console to console would be fine, but there's no debate that mouses are superior for fps games. I'm not a PC gamer either so it's not biased.

I'm sure I read about someone attempting this somehow.

I'll be damned if I can find where it was though...

If they could get it to work, it would be pretty fun, but I'd hate a match of 360 fanboys on one team, PS3 fanboys on the other, and me sitting in the lobby muting them all.

If we are talking about FPS games then perhaps you are right, but I was thinking more about RTS games. There is no effective way to play Company of Heroes or Sins of a Solar Empire with a controller. Plus, a big part of most Pc games is mods and if part of the community has mods and the other part can't get them, a split would occur in the community.

I don't really see why it hasn't been done more, it'd work fine for MMOs and co-op experiences. Would probably be fine for competitive sports games as well.
Why should I be held back from playing with my friends just because they bought their copy of a game on a different platform?

A fair and valid point, there would also be advantages for console players in some genre of games

This seems like one of those things that would trick you into thinking its a good idea, but then it would end up being a bad one... no idea how, but that might just mean that it has me tricked :p

It's understandable that it hasn't happened, though. I can completely understand why competing companies wouldn't want to be sharing the same network. Too much inter-company political issues would come into play. The cost-effectiveness of such a venture might not be good enough for them to try it.

Shadowrun sortof failed at that. PC players got their aim nerfed while 360 owners got some sort of help aiming.
I doubt you could do this if players had to play the same way (no aim-help etc.)

PS3 and 360 could prolly play well togeather, since they controll stuff in the same way.

Other genres than FPS:

RTS: no way, I would never get an RTS for my PS3, can't imagine an RTS on a console which couldn't have been done much better on PC

Fighters (tekken etc.) Might work, but none will ever get me to play games like with mouse/keyboard.

Racers: Sure, I don't see a problem with this.

MMO's: i'd like to see an MMO on consoles first. TBH i would really like to see a console MMO, i think it could work great, just have combat work differently than stuff like WoW where you haev 20 hotkeys and stuff.

It's a good idea when it works but PC players tend to be able to change/modify/hack things, not to mention the scientifically/statistically/unfortunately proven mouse > joystick when it comes to things like selecting units and aiming.

Not just PC players, Console players too [http://www.destructoid.com/hackers-have-taken-over-call-of-duty-4-on-ps3-142465.phtml]

Quite frankly, Microsoft said they were 'opening the floodgates' to cross platform play between PC and 360 owners by 2008, and that was announced in 06. 3 flippin' years later and I've seen very little of the sort, and still can't play Street Fighter IV on the PC with my 360 friends, and it's quite disheartening, especially considering I have the gamertag of this tournament winner I want to fight with.
