It's all about DPS. If you have a gun that does a ton of damage but takes FOREVER to fire again it's useless with more than one enemy. If you have a ubur high fire rate but it's only a pea shooter it doesn't do a thing.
there are so many more factors than this think about it if you have a sniper that takes forever to reload that can be okay if you are far enough away that they dont know where the bullet came from and you can kill many enemies. likewise if you have a shotgun you can kill multiple enemies per shot even if the dps is extremely low due to slow pumpimg times.
You're right that DPS is more complicated than what I said, and there are exceptions.

Obviously if a weapon is specialized for a certain task (sniping) it will excel over a general weapon with high DPS. With something like a shotgun being able to hit multiple enemies at once that would increase it's DPS based on how many enemies it can hit.

It depends on several things for me, like gun type, gameplay... Mainly, what you are fighting is the big pointer here.

Now, if I am fighting waves of enemy, I will want a fast firing weapon so I can shoot them quickly with little down time. Nothing good then shooting a dude and then his mate comes out from a corner when you load up your next shot. Fast Firing weapons will prevent that. Unleash a burst here and there without stopping.

However, if the enemy is armoured or has a fair resistance to bullets, or big for that matter, then I will want damage. I want him to know that the round will hurt! I want each shot to count and make him suffer. Boom! Yeah! Eat that! BOOM! I don't want to chip away at his defences, I want hammer down and smash it.

It all depends on what you fight of course.

My most important aspect is accuracy, and general lower RoF equates to higher accuracy, or at least less recoil. I'll take my FAL over an F2000 anyday. You feel like this cold, calculating assassin when you gun your opponent done with one to two bullets

However, nothings more fun than just run n gun with a high RoF smg, and just ruin everyone's day. It's like an 80's over the top action movie come to life.

I prefer a good mix of both. For instance, I would never use a gun that takes five bullets or more to kill and I would never use a gun that one-shots but only fires once every few seconds (I can't snipe worth shit). I normally stick to guns that kill in 2 or 3 bullets and fire rapidly but not ridiculously, like most assault rifles in games (notable exception: I <3 the RCP-90).

it would increase a shotguns potential dps but not its base dps ao then what do you go for base or potential?
