Poll: DBZ Poll: Goku or Gohan?

I was recently in a debate with my friend on whether or not Dragon Ball Z was about Goku or Gohan, this is the second time we've been through this and he still hasn't changed his stance.

I say it's all about Gohan, his growing power level and his character development from kid to young adult in this messed up situation.

He says it's about Goku because well, Goku is always there to move the plot along by doing things like killing the bad guys or going the next level of Super Saiyan before anyone else... Also the fact that we see him 100x more then anyone else.

I am now ready to be schooled.

I'd say it's really about Future Trunks. He has/had a sword, and we all know that the hero/main character always uses a sword.

I know, it always bugged me. I really think shows should avoid having the main character become a Deus Ex Machina and thus have to design the plot of episodes around an excuse as to why he's not there.

As much as Trunks and Vegeta are my favorites, Vegeta's thing is coming in to save someone and then getting beat down.

I think it was originally supposed to shift toward Gohan after Cell Saga, but everyone wanted Goku back for some ungodly reason. I think Gohan is a much more interesting character tbh.

Which is a shame, wasn't the whole point of DBZ supposed to be that it was a new generation? Goku's son was supposed to take over the show and become the new protagonist. Yet Goku stays the protagonist and instead of receiving and carrying the torch Gohan gets pushed aside.

Gohan mattered for a few episodes in the cell saga(fighting cell) only cause goku was stupid and didnt finish him off or let someone else(vegeta), before healing cell. But he goes back to useless in buu saga even though hes hyped to be this great warrior.(he gets puttied then killed)


But had vegeta not set off the events of the series (say for raditz) and latergiven birth to trunks goku wouldnt have been around or as powerfule....eh.

I felt it was to show a natural transition towards the younger generation with the cell saga, however after that it reverts to Goku's story.
So, I guess it would be both...

OT: It was actually supposed to be about Gohan and Goten after the Cell Saga, which is why Gohan beat Cell and why Goku died. Of course fanboys being fanboys they complained about it which is why Toriyama brought Goku back. I actually heard somewhere that Gohan was supposed to be the one to beat Super Buu.

So yeah it was supposed to be about Gohan at the end but it ended up being about Goku again.

From what I remember, Gohan was all bad ass till about Cell. He had this kind of Hulk quality, when things got really hairy or a friend got killed/seriously injured he went psycho and owned face.

He then had this "well shits calmed down, lets don a suit and have a 9 to 5 job" so his power level dropped (I assume) and never really caught back up. (I haven't watched them all and the ones I have watched I did so a good number of years ago)

Goku on the other hand constantly is on screen, constantly beating down bad guys and constantly reaching the next level of super saiyan .... while also making Vageta keep saying "how can a low level peasant have a bigger power level than me, the prince of all saiyans?"

Did you even watch the original Dragon Ball series? It solidifies how awesome Goku is. I did like Gohan's character in the TeamFourStar series went, though.

The last thing mentioned in this clip from a TFS DBZ Abridged episode pretty much sums things up:


"Gohan is the strongest in the universe but he still doesn't do craaaaaaap."

The series is clearly about Goku, it's his chronicles of being the Champion of Earth. Even in the Cell Saga in which Gohan's inner power manifests inside him and he becomes the first to reach SSJ2, Goku is still the savior for 1: Using instant transmission to get the self-destructing Cell off Earth and 2, essentially pushing Gohan's final Kamehame past its limit, allowing Gohan to overpower Cell.

And look at what happens in the Buu Saga. Goku intentionally nerfs himself because "I wanted the kids to have their chance at saving the world." Lot of good that did, Buu absolutely destroyed everyone, even Gotenks and Gohan with his ultimate power unlocked. And look who ended up saving them again: Goku, and Vegeta of course.

Then we get to the Kid Buu fight (my favorite fight in the entire series...Kid Buu ftw!) and SSJ 3 Goku at full power and fighting seriously can stand toe-to-toe with the little bastard...Buu just has an infinite reserve of endurance. It is during this fight that Vegeta finally admits to himself that Goku has surpassed him in every way as a warrior, achieved heights Vegeta never could. He officially declares that Goku is the best.

Gohan had his time in the spotlight during the Cell Saga, but to say that the entire series is about him...I just don't see it.

That's funny because I only like Dragon Ball and a very select few parts of DBZ.

To be honest, it just seems like that Gohan was supposed to be the main focus of the series. But when Goku died the first time, thre was fan outcry, so they brought him back. And then they did it again. And again.

Consider that Goke defeat the villains most of the time, it's all about Goku even after his death he still return.
