Plain and simple, I think the guy who invented defence missions should get a live grenade shoved up his nose.

But that's just me, what do you think?

I can handle the "defend this fortress for an alotted time" missions for what you're defending can actually take a few hits before being defeated. Its escort missions where i have to take "weak annoying character A" to point B and he'll die if he so much as trips on a rock.

I'm not a fan. I have a hard enough time keeping myself alive most of the time.

If what I'm guarding can take a hit, then they're great fun. If I'm just defending myself for an allotted time period, that's fun.
Anything else and it's frustrating.

I'm not a huge fan, but I can understand why they're there. and they make a refreshing (hah!) break from the rest of the action.

I cannot stand them. They were Resident Evil 4's worst feature, they are not fun in any RTS yet they continue to show up, and nine times out of ten they feel shoveled in and useless.

Actually, it's not just any defense missions. It's defense missions like in RE4 where she cannot help herself at all. You basically have to guide an unarmed idiot around who continuously walks into enemies. Escort missions are the worst, especially when you're punished for a teammate dying on you. That's what I loved about Bad Company. Your teammates are relatively smart, heavily armed, and invincible without seeming overpowered. If the people you had to escort were more like this, I probably wouldn't have a problem with them. Also tower/base defense missions in RTS games like StarCraft and Company of Heroes aren't very fun. You have to stay zeroed in on one place for 15 minutes while a barrage of bad guys waltzes down the road and you have to blow them up. To me it's not fun at all.

It depends for me.
If what I'm defending can actually take a beating, or if it is just me holding out, then I do not mind
BUT if what I need to defend can't take a paper cut to the finger without having a seizure and dying, then I hate them

No. Especially the ones in Bioshock. Actually, those are escort missions. Well, your still defending her as she takes her time.

As long as they let me set up beforehand. Not like that damn computer defense in MW2.

I can deal with defending a place (Basically stay in -Such and such- and kill things as they try to swarm you) just fine, but when I need to keep things alive (Protect -such and such- as -Gender(s)- tries to melee the giant demon with Boulders for hands) then I tend to get annoyed.

As for the 'Escort' variant, I absolutely Loathe those.

What? Like tower defence games? Or Defend point A for a certain amount of time?

I like them if they are done well. My brother loves a good tower defense game and is currently playing "Toy Soliders" On xbox live non-stop. And I think a good defence mission can be okay every now and then as long as they make it reasonable.

Their often pretty fun. Take Nazi Zombies or Garrus' recruitment mission in ME2 for example. Both are quite fun in my opinion. Anyway, they're sure as hell funner than forced stealth segments.
