Depends on what I'm defending.. If it's an NPC then I hate it.. AI is just way too dumb still to find any joy out of it.

In RTS games.. I find the defence missions a little.. Easy.. I think they fail to remember time and time again that.. When you play RTS.. You're constantly defending as you're attacking... Why make a level where you do what you do normally, except against a computer instead of a real player that would normally be harder to defend against...

In first person shooters, I find them exciting as long as I'm defending a location... Especially if I'm defending it from something that isn't a giant group of marines toting guns...

For example.. The farm level in Killing floor has to be one of my favorites.. Having a group of people locked in a cabin in the middle of no where with endless mutants knocking on the door? Yah, things like that can be fun as hell!

I love defense missions. Hell, I make em, and test em on Starcraft!

That being said, a defense mission needs to be done right. Defending something that cannot stand up to a strong breeze is annoying as any screaming 12 year old. And you need time to actually set up a defense, not "Get ready. OH MY LORD HERE THEY COME!"

And don't confuse "Defense" with "Escort". They are not the same thing.

And you, I should introduce to my impossible defense missions in Starcraft. They are far from easy. (And not impossible...just insanely difficult, and requiring a partner!)

Really depends on what type of game, and what type on defence mission.

In some games, it can be awesome having to hold down a spot, with enemies coming rushing at you, and you gotta stop each and every one.

Then theres the sucky side of the coin, the dreaded rpg, or more often MMORPG escort mission, where you have to escort a squishy NPC with shit for brains and a death wish from A to B.

But apart from the later, they're usually fine.

If it's something which moves then yes, if I'm defending something stationary like a rock then I'm fine with it.

Defense missions are definately more heroic, they give you something to fight for. Think of Helm's Deep - now if the good guys were assaulting, I think it would have had significantly less impact!

Defense missions are also awesome if you like co-op, because while there is a lot of fun in killing guys on the offensive, I personally find it more fun to have a cause to band together with and have something to defend. I like the heroics of defense!

Defense missions are NOT Escort missions"

I get the distinct feeling people in this thread are disagreeing with eachother without even agreeing on what they are disagreeing about... ;)

Defense missions mean you are mostly stationary, defending one objective or area. An example would be defending a structure in an FPS or blocking an area in an RTS. There's nothing wrong with these and I generally like them. There are some annoyances, like being given a base to defend in an RTS and finding out it was built by a moron.

Escort missions are what most people in this thread really hate. Having one or more (usually helpless) NPCs that must be escorted across the level and will commonly just suicide ahead on their own is the bane of gaming. The only escort mission I didn't hate was in WoW, where the Goblin I was escorting stuck to me like glue and hid when combat started...
