Just finished the game (Yeah, I crammed it in 3 days) and was wondering what the general consensus of the escapist was?

I personally loved it, even a bit more then the first game, and if skyrim wasn't come out I'd call Game of the year (Even then, Skyrim has some work cut out for it)

What about you guys what did you think?

Why or why not?
It was a great game, although it did have a few major flaws...

But I do have a question for you- How did you feel about the enemies in the final mission? I thought it was kind of jarring for the game to switch over to a survival horror feel (Although I think it did that very well).

my main concern was the ole' loading times chestnut, but it's already been patched to dramatically improve them, so hey... super dooper!

(as it stands my only real complaint is that a pacifist run is again, sadly, impossible, given the inevitable death/fire fight against barrett and whatever else i'm not up to yet, (and forced combat was, from memory, the downfall of the pacifist run in alpha protocol). still, i suppose the original deus ex didn't really have a pacifist run either, given that you have to redirect that nuke, rather than just abort the countdown... so i'm not that bothered)
You can do a pacifist run. Technically you have to kill the bosses, but eh. They don't count towards the achievement for not killing anyone.

Only played the training level so far (live in UK) and as soon as I heard the elevator code I had a nerd-gasm and knew I was in for a good game.

Well, I don't know if it would be considered survival horror, but it was pretty intense. Although how much it decided to drain my ammo before the final boss fight was plain evil.

My major gripe with the game is the boss fights, I had a healthy amount of a combat build put into Jensen for my playthrough but if I was a pure stealth hacker they would be close to impossible.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE ON BEATING BARRETT.

Its a great game, but holy shit is that boss fight next to impossible, I am beyond stuck.
Honestly I just kept cloaking, going behind him, and hitting him with a combat rifle in the head, I don't know how it would work for others

I'm currently about 20 hours into the game, and I'm loving it so far! I'm not sure about GOTY, but it's definitely a cut above a whole lot of recent games. My favorite thing about it is that you can tell that Eidos focused on what made the original good, and improved it. Not much mainstreaming, besides the cover system, but you don't realy need to use it anyway except for stealth.

I was a pure hacker with little to no combat or stealth abilities. THE SECOND BOSS FIGHT WAS SO AWFUL OH GOD. The third and final boss fights were easy as hell, though. The Grenade Launcher is so overpowered...

Anyway, I don't think you were supposed to use your ammo on those enemies. I just spammed double takedowns while munching on energy bars every three seconds.

I just did this- EMP Grenade > Shoot him in the head with a revolver twice, throw three normal grenades, shoot him more, throw another EMP grenade, shoot until he dies.

When you hit him with an EMP grenade, he'll start tossing a ton of grenades in the direction that he's facing so run behind him after the first EMP blast.

I'll say it's great. I can't willingly give it GOTY status when I know games like Arkham City and Skyrim are also slated for this year as well. This is a good game to set the bar with though. First major title near the fall season and it's pretty damn awesome.

The game's great! It has that old Deus Ex feeling to it that was missing from the second game. Though it could be from that I'm still in my experimental first playthrough, but this game is kicking my ass. I even had to lower the difficulty at some points because I got tired of getting murdered within seconds of being discovered.

I have two small complaints though. First, why can't people stand or sit still in a conversation? The constant shaking is really annoying, it's like they have some kind of disease or disorder.

Second, why does the Dutchman have a Jamaican/African accent? With a distinctive Dutch name I was expecting a distinctive Dutch accent, but this guy doesn't even sound like he's from Europe.

Either everyone here has really low standards for games or mine are absurdly high. I just thought it was a good game. Solid game play, interesting setting, good story. A few things in my mind kept it from greatness, the poor facial animations, and boring boss fights.

Just arrived in Montreal.
This game's a GOTY contender in my book. I'm currently playing it as a rental, but this is a definite purchase for me somewhere down the line.

I focused hacking/stealth, but I didn't have much problem with the boss fights. Zap them with a stun gun, chuck a frag grenade at their feet, repeat.

Not loving the bugged Pacifist achievement though, and I think a new game+ would have been nice.

I didn't really like it at first, but it's starting to grow on me. This is the first game I've played in the series, so I don't really know much about it, but the story has me interested.

Why do you say it's bugged?

It's got it's ups and down. I think the first one was better, but I liked it alot. Hell, I'm nearly done with my second playthrough, so obviously I like it. That said, I have a few issues with it, the biggest one being that I just don't feel immersed when I play it most of the time. I don't feel like I'm walking around Detroit, or an island city in China, I feel like I'm walking around level hubs.

Still, as far as theme and tone goes, this game is great, the stealth works brilliantly, and the gunplay is fun and frantic. All in all, a great game.

Throw any kind of grenade at him, preferably EMP or Gas. Then keep throwing barrels at him and don't give him a chance to move.

Or you could just stun him and use the Typhoon, or drop 3 frag mines at his feet :p

I've tried all 3 tactics, so take your pick :D

I'm selling 3 of my shit games for this first chance I get. People are throwing it "5/5" and "9/10" and my friends are nerding all over it. I have no idea what to expect, but I'm sure it'll get GOTY from someone.

Why do you say it's bugged?

In my case, I've since realized I killed the enemies during the prologue, but during my internet searching, people were reporting problems with gang members in Detroit being tagged as "dead" when they get knocked out. Seems to be fixable by reloading the save and redoing it.

The new Deus Ex is SO cash. It's reminiscent of HL2 and Mass Effect (Obviously the original Deus Ex, as well), each in different ways. Very good game. Not the best thing I've ever played, the cover system and the controls are clunky. I don't like using "X" (XBox) as my action button, why the hell isn't it "A"?

People calling it a stealth game, it's not if you don't want it to be. I blast doors down, kill everyone, and hack all the computers; that's how I want to play, so I do. Fun game, high level of replayability, and best of all it holds me over until Gears 3.
Yeah, I've got a similar gripe with the action button. PS3 for me, why is my action button Square instead of X? D:<

I'm loving this game hardcore. My only problem is I keep getting stuck in paths I can't take yet. ~_~ I don't personally find the stealth very clunky like everyone else. I've actually gone by pretty fluidly. Hardly ever am I caught.^^

I wasn't prepared to fight Barrett because I didn't carry anything but a Stun Gun on me(doing non-lethal Give me Deus Ex mode) so I was stuck, too. On each opposing corner of the room, you can slip away from Barrett and hide, and while he runs around searching for you, there are weapons and some ammo in those two rooms, along with grenades, if I remember correctly. I hit him with a couple EMPs and popped him in the head with a Revolver a few times and ran away, hit him with a concussion and did the same thing. Basically anything that'll blind or stun him will work.

I'm pretty meh about it. I guess that's what I get for basing expectations for a game on the hotness of the main character, which was really, really high in this case. So kind of screwed that one for myself. I've just been playing until it inevitably does something to piss me off, turning it off, and trying again the next day so far.

But I still can't actually dislike the game because of the aforementioned main character hotness. Seriously, Adam has no right to be that goddamn gorgeous. It's just criminal.
Sure, if you like a personality that's as plastic as a bottle of Coca Cola.

I have spent my evening willing small grey triangles to turn around.

Its a success with me so far but I've yet to finish it.
I think the graphics could be a bit better but thats my only criticism.

I have to agree that Adam is pretty damn hot though, him and his Neo voice... /lick

Playing this game as a pacifist hacker on deux ex difficulty sucks.

I never even fired a gun until Barrett.

No reticule? The controls on the PC versions are terrible - the detection box for objects is brutal. Opened a room full of lockers is harder than sneaking through an area full of bad guys.

Barrett stepped on 7 of his own grenades. I hit him with two explosive barrels and two poison canisters and he killed me with one grenade (level 2 dermal implants).

IMO the people giving this 10/10 grades are media (God mode, easy, like always) and dumb plagiarizing bloggers. This is a 7-8/10 game at best.

I rather like that actually. I find it much better than Bioware conversations where it feels like you're interrogating someone.
