Deus Ex is an excellent single player adventure with what feels like an incredibly open world even within a closed environment which is supremely difficult to do.

BF3 is utterly boring in single player. MP however is probably the most realistic game I've played without sacrificing too much fun. Think of all the military tech we have today, there's a damn good chance BF3 has it. Everything from C4 to mortars to tanks, landing craft and, of course, jets.

I played a bit of DX:HR and I've played a bit of the Multiplayer mode-Battlefield 3. I'd say Deus-Ex though since I like single player far more than multi. Also, Battlefield doesn't have split-screen so there's no getting together with buddies unless you do lan-parties. I've heard the Jet fighter bits of Battlefield 3's multiplayer are amazing but I counter that with a, "Oh yeah? I can cut out the FPS middle-man buy picking up the latest Ace Combat!"

Short answer, Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I've played both, all the way through and into multiplayer and right now I'm going to say.

Human Revolution.
Battlefield 3's campaign lasted me 5 hours, Human Revolution's campaign lasted me 5 days. If you're going to put a lot of time into multiplayer then Battlefield 3 is definitely going to give you more time to play with it, but Human revolution is something you should probably experience.

You can even use the money left over to buy the first Deus Ex and play it before Human Revolution.

Then won't you be a fancypants.
You can even be a Deus Ex hipster like me.

I will get more replayability with Battlefield 3 because I love multiplayer and co-op. I like Deus Ex, but for some reason I just got bored with it on the last level and haven't gone back to it. I've already sunk 11 hours into Battlefield 3 multiplayer and it is extremely good, the only gripe I have is I wish there were kill cams because I've been killed by some crazy shit and I want to know how they did it.

Also, don't come to the escapist if you want help choosing between an rpg and an fps, we will 99% of the time vote for the rpg unless it is utter shit.

Battlefield 3. They are both incredible games but I prefer BF3.

PS. I can see your avatar fine.

Deus Ex doesn't have Splitscreen, and I have heard the latest Ace Combat is terrible. Played the demo and BF3 jets are far superior.

Loved Deus Ex, but if you're going to get skyrim, I'd have battlefield for when you want some online action.
But both are really good.

I didn't mean to imply Deus Ex had split-screen or multiplayer. I mentioned Battlefield not having split-screen because when I went to play it, it was under the assumption that I could play it with my Bro-in-law. Granted we could still play but it turned into a game of pass-the-controller instead of a simultaneous kill-fest.

Do you want a really good, but slightly disappointing single player game, or a really good, but slightly disappointing multi player game? Both are great, but each one has also some big issues that aren't game breaking, by any stretch of the imagination....unless you plan on playing Battlefield's campaign, which I must say, is just a terrible idea. For all intents and purposes it's a MP only game.

For now I'd say Deus Ex, since Battlefield could use a bit of patching, and it's likely to stay popular for a good bit of time, so get that later.

I hate it when people ask to choose between TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAMES IN TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT GENERES!

I mean, Battlefield 3 is a multiplayer focused FPS. Dues Ex: HR is a single-player RPG. You cannot compare them. They each have their own very special positives and negatives and they each play very differently. A comparison between BF3 and MW3 is a much better comparison.

I would go with Deus Ex simply because of Origin's Privacy Policy. It bothers me, but it doesn't bother others. If EA didn't spy on your computer and what you do, I would, without question or hesitation, buy BF3. Right now.

If you ask me, though, I would flip a coin. Heads: Battlefield 3; Tails: Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Also, that way, if you end up hating the game, it will nobody's fault! :D

Either way, good luck and I hope you enjoy whatever game you decide to buy! :)

I'd say you get more for your money if you buy Deus Ex. More freedom, and more fun. The story's engaging, the characters interesting (most of them), and overall a great gaming experience.

BF3... second verse (or in this case third) same as the first, i suppose. At least that's what it seems like from trailers and gameplay vids, i won't actualy pay money to play it so i don't have an experienced opinion to give.

Deus Ex I found boring and, well, just not good. Just started playing the BF3 single player today and so far so good. Nothing outstanding. But, I played the MP Beta and that was hella awesome. I think it really comes down to whether you want to play SP or MP, and nobody can tell you which to do.

Having barely played the Battlefield 3 beta and having played only so much of Deus Ex, I'd say it depends on what you're content with. With Deus Ex, you're probably getting something you haven't experienced before, and it's certainly an experience that won't be hampered by any obnoxious, unreliable people online in a multiplayer experience that's you have probably faced more than enough times. With Battlefield 3, my guess is that you do indeed get that SAME experience you have had. Even if you find it enjoyable, it is not doing anything new and it certainly doesn't hold the single-player experience in high regard; based on what I have read, Battlefield may as well be figuratively spitting on the idea of single-player. Regardless, if you honestly don't care that Battlefield 3 does absolutely NOTHING worthy of mentioning besides offering refined (or merely competent, in my honest opinion) multiplayer gameplay, then I'd have to say wait for something better, because chances are Modern Warfare 3 will be more fun, even if it will no doubt be just as contemptible as this game. More importantly, Deus Ex is fun, and offers a striking number of ways to play, and is overall a lot more interesting, which Battlefield 3 is not in the slightest. I still have to say, again, that if that does not matter to you and you would rather jump online, then disregard my compliments to Deus Ex. Also disregard what I say if you feel that my opinion isn't worth much considering how little I've played of both games, but I would still argue that as long as I can reason then I can give a good thought-out opinion on them.

In retrospect, why didn't I quote? Anyway, in reply to The Virgo:
You can compare two completely different things. That is, after all, the only way we discover that they are different. Anyway, what's more important is that you can still decide which is a better game. One way, for example, is to judge the experience it will provide. In this case, Deus Ex provides a stable single player experience that is mostly well-designed and fun. Battlefield 3 provides a single player game that isn't worth paying money for, and a more thought-out and focused-on multiplayer game whose quality is basically on a rollercoaster and, as such, is completely subjective (namely, subjective to the player and each individual online match he or she plays) 100% of the time. Therefore, I'd argue that by all rights Deus Ex is a better game. However, that may or may not be the issue in the OP's decision. I think the issue which game the OP would enjoy more.

I would say get Dues Ex I am on my second play through and easily got 40+ hours out of it. BF3 I got yesterday and can't run it because of issues with the instalation (PC). Probably going to have to surf through a load of forums to find a solution.

Even if I get BF3 working the SP will be short and then it's the MP has huge variations depending on the people/friends etc playing it. I expect it will still be very good but Dues Ex blew em away, the soundtrack for one thing is great.

Two very different games BF3 is all about the MP which is great if you like the MP in previous Battlefield games the campaign thus far 3 levels in is ok nothing spectacular but nothing too bad either, Deus ex was an amazing game with a lot more to it than I initially thought deep story good stealth and rpg elements and a good shooting system to top it off easily one of my favorite games I've ever played. Their both excellent but totally different types of games BF3 the huge MP spectacle versus Deus ex the deep dystopian rpg its really going to boil down to do you want a great MP game that'll last for years or the finely crafted single player story and systems of Deus ex. It's a toss up you can't go wrong with either but I'd pick up BF3 while the MP is fresh and easier to get into and pick up Deus ex later since it being a few months older changes nothing except there'll be more dlc for it.

Basically the title sums everything up. I want to either buy Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Battlefield 3. I really like FPS's and RPG's so (in my eyes at least) it's a pretty fair toss up between both. I'm also planning to buy Skyrim, if that changes anything.

Really off-topic, but is my avatar showing up? For me it's showing the broken link thing where my avatar would be.
Answer a simple question: Do you want a single-player experience or a multiplayer experience?

If you want single player, then Deus Ex. It's an awesome game and it doesn't have a trace of multiplayer.

If you want multiplayer, then BF3. It's the latest multiplayer-focused AAA Modern Military FPS but the single player campaign is short and boring.

And your avatar is showing up fine.

Honestly.. you probably have BF3 already on your console a few times.. its not that unique or different from any thing else out there.

Deus Ex is something you probably don't have and will provide hours of entertainment and a unique experience to boot.

I donno if my vote was fair. I don't really like shooters that have a military focus, so I vote for Dues Ex because it's got an imaginative premise at least. Haven't played either.

Deus Ex: HR. And I didn't even like Deus Ex: HR.

BF3: Another bloody military FPS with pseudorelism and focus on MP.
I wonder how many more ignorant gnomes like you will crawl out of the woodwork and curse Battlefield 3 for focusing on multiplayer. I take it you also believe Battlefield started as a singleplayer based console shooter in 2008? Newsflash buddy, Battlefield was multiplayer-only the first 4 games before it ventured onto consoles.

It really comes down to if you're a single player or multiplayer guy/gal. Only this year I've had the pleassure to play great single player games like Portal 2, Witcher 2 and Deus Ex which I praise equally. Battlefield 3 however is the best multiplayer game I've played since Call of Duty 4. Take note that I play it on the PC, don't know how badly gimped the consoleversion is.
