I would be more excited about D3 but I will be waiting for the Xbox version confirmation of whether its going ahead or not. Personally I HATE HATE HATE click-to-move controls, HATE! I am not saying that nobody should like / dislike it, I am just saying that I cant stand that control scheme.

So I am excited but I know the version that I would be getting wont be out for awhile :(

I don't understand why you were expecting quality and innovation, OP. This is ACTIVISION we're talking about, not Blizzard. ACTIVISION's only goal, as a publisher, is making profit and as it stands innovation doesn't always pay off. Copying a formula that has proven successful in the past WILL, however guarantee profit. Look at Call of Duty. A mediocre game that somehow managed to sell millions. The formula is being copied by rival publisher THQ in the form of Homefront and instead of the game being shunned for being a piece of shit, just like Call of Duty, it managed to sell millions. EA is also hot on the heels of Activision by claiming that "insert generic boring FPS here" will overtake Call of Duty.

Let's look at the MMO genre. Blizzard had huge success with World of Warcraft and immediately other rival companies attempted to copy the formula in hopes of also achieving success instead of actually innovating. Most of them failed or had mild success, Warhammer and Age of Conan being perfect examples of rushed pieces of shit that attempted to cash in on the hype.

EA is also attempting the same thing with Bioware. They aquired a popular studio and started to dumb down their games in favor of appealing to a much more wider audience and in turn make more cash. Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 2 and 3 are perfect examples of EA interfering.

Instead of making Diablo 3, Activision could have focused on innovating the Point and Click RPG genre by making an entirely new IP. However, innovation is risky. The new IP might not do well. So, they made a sequel to an 11 year old game and is currently trying to get it as close to its other franchise, World of Warcraft, as possible so as to attract the fanbase. The same thing can be said about StarCraft 2. It's basically StarCraft 1 with better graphics and DRM but it still sold millions.

Publishers are a plague on the industry. The sooner we get rid of them the sooner studios will start focusing more on innovation rather than on multi million dollar marketing campaigns.

I don't know if it will live up to D2. I loved it too much. Although I trust Blizzard and when they're taking their sweet time making a game, it's worth the wait.

ITT: "Not sure if I like the graphics style - game's probably going to be crap."

Get the hell over it and judge the finished game on its merits.

I'm excited but they could hurry up a bit, maybe light a fire under their asses. The first trailer came out ages ago and we've been drip fed videos and artwork ever since and they still dont even have a release date for it.

While I can respect them wanting to make sure its ready to be released they have taken ages to do so. Aparently most of the work is done theyre just working on content now, so there had better be loads of it =D

I've seen several gameplay videos and it looks just as mind-numblingly boring as the first two games. Take a few steps, get surrounded by monsters, click on them, watch them explode, repeat a million times. I've never understood the appeal of those games. I played the first two and thought they were repeatitive and dull. My brother, on the other hand, was a full-fledged Diablo 2 junkie and I'd repeatedly ask him "Why are you still playing that damn game?". He would just say "I don't know." I think it's just the loot. People get addicted to finding that ph4t lewt. They're like Pavlov's dog getting excited every time it hears the bell ring. I'm not that greedy or materialistic and if I were, I'd much rather put my resources into getting real, tangible goods, not digital weaponry that I can only use in one game to get more digital weaponry. It's like that old cocaine commercial, "I use coke so I can work more, so I can earn more money, so I can buy more coke, so I can work more, so I can earn more money, so I can buy more coke...". You play Diablo so you can get more loot, so you can click more, so you can get more loot, so you can click more, so you can get more loot, so you can click more, so you can get more loot...

Yeah, I think I'm going to pass on this one. I don't care how many 9's and 10's it gets when the reviews come out.

I don't remember when I first heard that Diablo 3 was coming out, but I do know it was a couple of years ago. I also remember that I was pretty much wetting myself with anticipation: Diablo 2 is my favourite game (though I attribute that to fond memories of playing it from age seven - that game may as well have bloody raised me) and I was and am glad it'll finally be getting a sequel. At the time, the graphics looked positively astounding: that same bleak, gothic style that the first games captured so well brought into the HD generation of gaming.

So where is the simply yes option without the bias on the art style?

If you disagree with the art style, go back and play Diablo II again. Pay close attention to the backgrounds and artworks, particularly in the second and third levels. Notice how they are distinctly not grey and foggy? One might even call those colorful...

I think the artwork is fine. It's the gameplay that has me concerned.
Though I'm still greatly looking forward to it.

you know I had pretty much forgotten about diablo 3.
if and when it comes out ( we all know blizzards moving deadlines) I'll give it a whirl and decide if I like it. All I see now is just the usual teasers and people making comments about a few pictures and videos.

Honestly I forgot about the game until you mentioned it here.
I'm much more excited for Torchlight 2. But even then, I don't really need any Action-RPGs at the moment.

Anyway, a lot of people have compared the new artwork as "It's not Diablo 3, it's WoW 2" but honestly I don't really care. I think it looks interesting enough. That said, I much prefer the early early screens of Diablo 3 (like the ones from 2005)

Either way, looks okay. I kind of liked Diablo because it was darker, but it seems more colorful now. I can take that since the effects look very nice.

Wait, people were looking forward to D3 for the graphics?
Why aren't you playing tech demos on a loop then?

Definitely still interested. My brother and I pass Blizzard's HQ every time we come home from the gym, so Blizzard's current activities are often a subject of interesting speculative conversation for us.

I think Rob Pardo recently mentioned that Blizz is pushing hard to get D3 out the door by "the end of 2011". So, if we were to take this as fact (which we don't have to, but just for the sake of interesting speculation we will), we'd have to assume that we've got at least another 9 months or so of waiting before D3 would come at the very earliest. I think that long of a wait is definitely going to encourage me to work through my current back log of games in the meantime.

On the bright side, if i'm busy with other games D3 will probably fall under the radar for a while, so much so that by the time a release date is formally announced it will most likely be a pleasant and quite welcome surprise.

Yes I'm looking forward to it and it looks like we will all have to pay a Battlenet monthly fee when D3 comes out. If you have a WoW account, the bright side is this Battlenet charge will cover that game. So when D3 comes out, I'm back into WoW again... sigh.

Keep in mind that the first pic you posted was just a loading screen - essentially concept art.

Even so, I'll admit that the colours are a little vivid for a Diablo game. Maybe tone down the brightness, and you're good.
