I personally thought infinity ward massively improved since CoD 5. I thought it was a great game. Yes, the gameplay is the same, but what really hass to be different about it? It's the same engine and same gameplay with new features and a better multiplayer, IMO. The story was unique and I thought the characters were done well.

Also, don't hate a game just because the playerbase is 12 years old and annoying (which it mostly isn't). Runescape has annoying people that play it, yes. WoW has devoted assholes, yes. Call of Duty has racist screaming 9 year olds, yes, but that doesn't make them bad games.

I don't think they are milking the franchise for money either. They wouldn't have put that much effort into making a longer campaign, better multiplayer, easter eggs and a different type of storyline than they have been if they were only doing it for the money.

In my opinion black ops did some things well, like the great storyline and the more balanced normal multiplayer gameplay. On the other hand I also think there are poorly designed maps like Radiation, and almost NONE of the maps have any chance for snipers like me save for one or two spots on Villa and Array simply because none of the maps have very much open space save for one narrow hallway or something. Plus the spawning location system seems a bit weird, like your going in a full circle. But the thing that I don't like the most would be that the map Nuketown is way over played in Hardcore. Nothing against the map, its just not good for hardcore.

In my opinion the campaign wasn't that bad, Zombies is okay if a little repetitive after a while as far as co-op game modes go, the multiplayer is where most of the issues are but admittedly with the new updates it is getting better.

Overall it was a decent enough purchase but I don't think I'm buying another COD game, especially after only a year of development. (in hindsight that should of been my first warning :p)

It did some things right but if you go by multiplayer alone then yes it failed

I saw 2.5 million people on at once in the first few days of release - most I've ever seen since is 800k (weekend and public holiday). Seems like there were a LOT of returns...

Only reason I still have my copy is because it's the only thing I can get a game on with people on my friends list nowadays.

I guess it kind of did since I am a moderate CoD fan and I have no intention of buying this game for at least another month or two. I don't know if that is really Treyarch's fault or I am a little bit jaded after MW2 or perhaps it is because there are so many FPSs on the market, but I wouldn't say Black OPS failed per say. It did extremely well and is probably going to be the game that lets Treyarch get out from under Infinity Ward's shadow.

It's difficult at the beginning because the weapons you start with are so poor compared to what you unlock later on, therefore you tend to get pwned a lot as you start. Really though, it is an excellent game, the best of the COD series so far I would even say.

It failed misrebly, it was a terrible game, granted it 5 x better than MW2 but it was still horrible especially compared to the god like Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare

It's meh for me.

Story was fun, if forgettable.
Didn't care for zombies in World At War and I still feel the same way.
The multiplayer has the same problem as True Grit for me. I know it's good, and I like it fine, but I'm not entertained. It's balanced, and I like the maps, but something about it just doesn't have the same shine COD4 and WAW did.

From someone who has always just played the games from the singular player standpoint I don't think the game failed.

Voted meh as the story line was decent, but I still kinda prefer the bat-shit crazy storyline from MW2 to Black Ops which imo can't decide if it's going in the same direction or going for relative realism.

Zombies has never interested me a great deal but the new maps seem to of even managed to lose the interest of mates who used to be zombie mad.

As for multiplayer it seems to of been made in an incredibly lazy manner by making a small range of guns, duplicating some of them whilst making very minor changes so as to give the impression of a wide choice and balance. In reality I recon people should get bored of it a lot quicker than the previous versions due to the lack of variety in weapons, little new inclusions in terms of game modes (for parties at least) and generally just being the same old cod again.

Black Ops has confirmed for me that Treyarch are poor game designers and as I doubt IW and sledgehammers abilities it's going to be the last cod I buy... honest

I prestiged four times and I'm 3 levels away from doing it for a fifth... and, suddenly, I'm bored. I would still play with friends, but it's not really much fun with random people.

Pros:
*Reasonably diverse multiplayer maps. (Except that there are maybe two maps actually good for snipers).
*Contracts.
*New leveling system. (It's a good change of pace, and at least they're trying to tweak the formula).
*Theatre mode.
*Zombies.

Cons:
*Lag mitigation is atrocious.
*The AK-74u and G11 are hopelessly unbalanced.
*Lag mitigation is atrocious.
*The quickscoping fix doesn't prevent quickscoping, but does prevent a fair shot made in the first second after you scope in and hold your breath.
*Lag mitigation is atrocious.
*No Spec Ops co-op challenge series.

Yes, all of this deals with multiplayer - Call of Duty has never really had much in the way of replay value in the single player. I went back and got all the achievements for Veteran and doing random stuff, but these games exist almost solely for the multiplayer.

Short answer: I voted 'Meh.' I got my money's worth out of it and now I'm bored.

Does it have the cool co-op mini-missions that MW2 had? If it does then it can rank at least a meh...
It's got online splitscreen, splitscreen with AI's, and zombie mode.
Not to mention the dead ops arcade minigame that can also be played with two people on the same console.
What I'm trying to say is that they did something right.
As for everything else, the currency system was an interesting addon. I personally don't hate it and think it kind of adds to the game.
The wager matches too are very good addons, and everything else is exactly what you'd expect to see in a generic call of duty game, with the exclusion of stopping power and juggernaut...
So I'd say it was a step in the right direction, but still not the FPS gold people have been looking for...

I actually thought the multiplayer was great, I was on it for ages, and really thought they got the balence alot better than the Modern Warfare series. The only reason I haven't played it for so long is that I lose interest in games pretty quick, otherwise I'd still play it now.

No, it's not much good.

However, seeing as it sold better then anything ever, "fail" doesn't quite seem like an appropriate term.

Did it fail? It certainly did not fail. I for one enjoyed Black Ops, it is a great game to play, even with or without your friends. The Single Player is pretty great, but there aren't as many "WOW!" moments, which is probably why many of you don't like it, because of the standard that Modern Warfare (2) set out, with Russians taking over the White House, which seems reasonable on why you would hate it. But it's not a MW2 copy, it's much better than that. It might run on the same engine, but it's a really balanced game, each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, there aren't any overpowered killstreaks, and if there are, they're balanced so that you can do something to prevent that killstreak from getting the owner kills (like Rocket Launchers...).

The Currency system is great, buying guns for what type of style you have is great. I'd much prefer this over unlocking an MG, then a pistol, then a sniper... it's just... If we don't use them, why bother to get them in the first place? The ability to purchase perks at your own pace is great. I'd much prefer this over unlocking multiple perks that you can use, instead buying them to meet your needs. The Wager matches are a blast. It sucks when you lose, but you get an adrenaline rush when you play them (take for instance, One in the Chamber, or Sticks and Stones). You're playing for your own money, which makes you want to keep playing to get your money back if you lose.

Nazi zombies is fantastic. I love working with my friends to get to higher rounds. It's so much fun when you play with your friends and work together. They did an excellent job with the Nazi Zombies, everything's well crafted, from the part when you can hear your character talk when you press X on a portrait, to the musical easter egg you can obtain when you press X on all three meteors (which is a great song).

Overall, I'm happy with what Treyarch did with Black Ops. It's certainly a good game, and I don't see how it's a "fail of a game." It did much better than Modern Warfare 2; I haven't seen a modded lobby since the first day I played it, and I have a blast with my friends. I'm looking forward to the next Call of Duty.

It's not as good as MW2 but the game beat all records ever set, you'd have to be a moron to say it 'failed'
