I admit, I didn't feel for the cube. It didn't help me in anyway a normal cube could have and really I just found it amusing near the end.
On the subject of liking inanimate objects, I was attached to one of the friendly turrets in HL2.
I carried through all of Nova Prospect and broke my heart when I realized the turret hadn't came with me in the teleporter :(

I was sad to lose it, since it felt like it had become my shield. Also, giving it a name and providing it with useful qualities helped roll that along.
I wasn't at all pained to see it go, but I tried to find alternatives to it for a few moments before putting it in the furnace.

EDIT - I also felt bad for pushing over the turrets that tried to kill me. They, at least, had voices. Cute one's too.

No, it's a generic cube with a heart on it. I felt more attached to the turrets and they were shooting at me! If the companion cube could fire lasers however...

It was just a cube with a heart on it. What's there to like? Destroying it was a symbolic act, but I didn't give a damn about the cube itself.

Not that this detracts from Portal's general brilliance and hilarity, though. It was a kickass game.

No, I tossed it in without a second thought.

Then I played the Advanced Map.

Dear God, I could've kissed the Cube when compared to the horridness of the Companion Sphere.

But sometimes its fun to commit suicide after you destroy the Cube, as sort of a guilt and comedic relief act.

I don't see how anyone could actually feel remorse about burning a steel box. There were tons of them, you could use them as weights, stepping-stones, weapons or riot shields. It wasn't meant to garner any actual feeling, not by Valve. The cube was a laughable attempt to test human emotion by a nutso AI, and just further illustrated how far off base GLaDOS was about people.

I... I havent played through Portal...

It's been completely spoiled for me and I know see no point in playing it, so i never killed/destroyed the companion cube.
It's a fun game regardless. I had it completely spoiled for myself when I played it and still absolutely loved it. Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

"For" it? No.

I was sad to lose the invaluable function it provided though - a portable platform!
I also was sad to lose the commentary concerning it that GLaDOS provided.

Really, I did like that you were required to hump it about - it added an interesting element to the gameplay. You couldn't just ditch it, as you had to make sure both it and you got to the end of the level.

I tossed it in right away, and only felt bad when GLaDOS told me it was invited to my party.

MY ONLY FRIEEEEEND!

In all seriousness, I found the whole business around the companion cube to be positively surreal. I felt a bit nervous when I incinerated it, but when I wasn't punished immediately for it, I forgot about it.
