I thought bats were cool until I saw a bigass crab lop the heads off of two sleeping bats simultaneously.

In England!? Where do you live? I'm in Essex, Cambridge, and occasionally Leicester, and I've never seen a wild bat in my life. And I'm nocturnal too.

EDIT: I've looked up Storeton, and it's your own fault for living that close to Wales, it's not natural.

I live in Lancashire and there are bats flying outside my house every night, especially in the summer, they're probably Common Pipistrelle bats, which are the most common bats in the British Isles.

I live in the countryside though, and there's a big pool of groundwater in the fields behind my house which breeds lots of insects, which in turns attracts the bats, plus there's a copse and some woods nearby.

Perhaps you just need to live in a bat friendly habitat, or know what to look and listen out for.

Back to the original question, I don't really get freaked out or bothered by bats because they normally fly too high to bother me, and I know they're quite small and harmless, but if a bat does swoop down low and come close to me, then I do duck because I have quick, slightly paranoid reactions.

Pigeons are worse, when you're walking down the street daydreaming and one flies close to you and sets off your proximity alarm, but that's probably just because it's daylight and more people can see you ducking like a fool.

Of course I'd feel like an even bigger fool if a pigeon flew into my head on a busy afternoon, in the middle of town.

I remember hearing bats can only injure you if they bite the little webbing between your fingers. I don't see many bats where I live, but they don't seem like something I'd be afraid of.

No, mainly because there are very few bats around where I live.

What can I say? I'm a city kid.

No, heck I love watching them buzz around, especially when they're close to me.

I can't wait until summer comes around again, you see a surprisingly large number of bats around here. Especially when you consider the fact that they're tagged as endangered animals here.

They're among my favourite animals, actually, even before I loved Batman. I love just sitting outside on a warm summer evening, see bats swooping low above us and swallows high in sky, darting around and making crazy manoeuvres, shouting their little shrieks. Very entertaining to watch, and they eat those annoying mosquito's.

I'll miss that when I (most probably) move to the big city. Given, it's dead boring here, but it has it's charm. Now in the winter it creates some pretty pictures, but especially in the spring and summer it's rather calming every now and then. The sweet fragrant of all kinds of blossoms, not the stench of the city, the quiet chirping of birds, crickets, the wind blowing through the trees and to stay ontopic, the shrieks of bats and swallows. And of course the gorgeous night skies.

Yeah, the countryside isn't so bad every now and then.

I live pretty near a park, and there are a few around here, but they've never troubled us. I like bats.

Theres quite a few on campus in Norwich, although I only seem to see them while LARPing so maybe they're just really elaborate props.
But once I did get hit in the side of the head by a bat, silly creature.

If you live in Leicester and have not seen a bat or fox, you've simply not been looking. Check out Vicky Park, Nelson Mandela, down Tudor Road or Abbey Park and there's a whole bat-cave's worth.

I'm a bit lucky in that I live just off Braggy, but still.

Funny story conserning bats

Ok, so I was ~10 at the time. My family on my moms side rents a cabin in the woods for a week. We were there for about 2 days with no problems, then one day me, my sister, and my cousin start hearing scratching noises from the wood burning stove in the living room. We tell the parents but they dont believe us nor do they check. Eventually more people show up and the living room gets converted into a bedroom. The next morning my aunt and uncle who spent the night in the living room mentioned the scratching noises as well. So the parents go into the living room and open the stove door. The entire stove was filled with dozens of live bats, much fleeing of women, small children, and some of the men ensued.
The owner of the cabin comes out and figures out that they came in through the chimney that is normally covered by a wire mesh to prevent small animals from falling in, however the mesh is no longer in place for some reason. He says that the wire mesh needs to be replaced but the bats need to leave first. He offers to get an exterminator.

Now here is the funny part. The parents decide that they can take care of it themselves, mind you they have been drinking almost constantly for the past 2 days. Not real heavy drinking but still, they were drunk.

They start a fire in the stove, figuring that the bats will either burn or leave. However a large amount of bats stay in and seem unharmed by the fire. This is the point where the plan changes to hilarity. Imagine six men standing around a stove. One of them opens the door, counts how many fly out, while the rest use an assortment of cookie sheets and tennis racquets to take the bats out, and then carry them outside. Now imagine all of this with the six men it question with beer in one hand and their weapon of choice in the other.

So remember: ~20 Bats+ 6 drunk men+ random sports equipment and cooking sheets- all sense of reason = Total hillarity

Norwich, Norfolk, England?

If so, hey what's up my fellow Norfolkian.

If not, stop stealing our place names America!

Anyway, OT:

I love bats, had quite a few in the house, which I often deal with by use of a towel. They are adorable and sweet and cute as all get out.

Besides, if I recall correctly, they don't fly into you unless you're ducking and weaving about. If you confuse their radar, sure they may make a mistake, otherwise, they tend to avoid what they perceive as massive animals, potential harmful to them.

Eh. Bat's don't scare me, although I did jump when one landed on my head. (I was playing a 'stealth' game with my friends in a park and night)

I love bats, I find it mesmerising the way they swoop so suddenly in the air. I used to watch for in my old area, but I haven't seen any since I moved. Hmm...

Oh no! Your bats are working for the Principality of Zeon! Hopefully, they don't have mobile suits.

As for me? The only time I have a bat problem is when I visit Panama. Vampire bats, comrades. Mean suckers, every last one of them. I wandered into a cave on one of the islands near Colon and I got blitzed by a whole bunch of 'em. The bite hurts like hell too.
Holy crap! Have you had an urge too bite someone recently? Or, have you sparkled? XD

On-topic: Two or more actually flew so near my head they touched my hair last summer. Bats are kinda rare here in the middle of Sweden, they usually live near the ocean for some reason. They're okay, I guess, they're just misunderstood creatures. The ones that "suck blood" usually only lick blood from open wounds, and It's almost always farm-animals they get the blood from and I've heard that the bats often stop the wounds from becoming infected and dirty.

I see them fairly often, mostly from them flying about, sometimes from the cat catching them.
