People get too hung up on graphics. Some of my favorite games are from the older consoles (PS1, N64, etc.), and a lot of the games that are coming out now have absolutely no good points apart from looking pretty.

Personally, I think all game companies who sacrifice gameplay for graphics should have to spend 10 years locked in a room with ReDeads and Pyramid Head. And when they're finally let out they should be dismembered with the Biggoron's Sword, set on fire, and then the world's population of gamers gathers to piss on the ashes.

No, within reason. If its difficult to interpret whats actually going on, then yeah, they play a factor.

In a world where games can look awesome, having a game that looks sub-par makes me cringe.

Graphics matter.

To some extent, yeah they do, but I do feel that graphics should remain only a portion of the selling point of a game. More important than soundtrack, but less important than the gameplay mechanics. Maybe I'm just jaded that the first thing my friends talk about after playing a game is the graphics.

This.

I find myself reluctant to play games like Morrowind now because of how ugly the polygons looked, but I have no problem playing 32-bit RPGs and N64 games. Go figure.

For epic old games, like Deus Ex, Thief 2, and System Shock 2, it doesn't bother me at all. In newer games though, good graphics can make me enjoy it more, but not to the point where it makes up for weak gameplay.

One generation previous is about as far back as I will go, I've become spoiled.

But if the game is good enough, I'll make do.
I look at good graphics like I do big boobs. Not really necessary, but great nontheless.

yes and no. i dont particularly mind graphics if the game ages well cause of its art style (such as warcraft 3 still looks good and it was released in 97 or something) and some games like platformers dont need good graphics. fps i need my graphics. but it doesnt have to be fantastic like crysis. im fine as long as they dont look blocky, there are no jaggies (or i can aa the jaggies out), and the color scheme doesnt make my already color blindness think everything is grey (far cry 2 damn you... i wasted 20 bucks)

I think its ridiculous that so much stock is invested in appearances in the gaming industry; isn't that something for the movies? Maybe that's why this crap costs so much to make in the first place these days.

Bottom line is the games are still games, if they're not fun to play they're utterly worthless, no matter how good they look -- developers need to remember the order in which that works.

Yes. Graphics are directly proportional to how immersed you can potentially get in a game. Immersion is key to a masterful game, therefore graphics are also key. I concede that a game doesn't have to be shiny to look good though. I also concede that I don't expect every game I play to be a perfectly crafted masterpiece, and I'd certainly prefer a game that was exclusively fun over one that exclusively looked good.

Basically this question is too limited. Yes and No are both bad answers, but to be overly to the point (do graphics matter at to me?) absolutely. It doesn't specify how much they have to matter.

Graphics don't make a game for me, gamplay and story do (side effect of too much DnD).

That said, games that have shit graphics or poorly designed color pallets which result in making the game hard to play (okami I'm looking at you) will be abandoned.

No. To me, all that matters is how enjoyable a game is. A game could look like a pile of puke and if I had fun with it, I'd still play it.

Hell, if a pile of puke were fun to play with, I might play with a pile of puke. That is about how much something looks matters (or doesn't matter, truly) to me.

Console, Not so much.
PC: For "realism", no. As far as draw distance and resolution, it makes a big difference, especially in some multi-player situations (it won't make you play better, but it helps: like a sharpened blade will cut better, but you still have to know how to use it)

its more so feeling limited by the fact there is a poll...

OT: graphics are a nice thing but I still hold gameplay and story on the top its like cake if it tastes good and tells a good story it doesn't matter what it looks like but if it is a nicely decorated cake as well, well that's the icing on the cake (yes bad pun intended) but if the cake looks good but tastes like crap you wasted your money on it.
