By the way yes I know the Wii needs better graphics
No, no it really does not.
I second that. Sometimes its nice to have a great, shiny, good looking game. But I still go back to the days of 2-D and pixels, and it's just as enjoyable. So although graphics will improve, they in no way need to.
Most of my favourite games are on the SNES (FF6, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger) and I still obsessively play Diablo 2 and Starcraft.
I would say if graphics get better, that's great, but I don't really care if they do.

I mean cmon, Pong is still fun right?

So many people are complaining that the graphics on the next gens already need to be updated.
Who?
my thoughts exactly

as for wii, it's got fine graphics when devs can be assed in games like galaxy, brawl, metroid, cod 5, nmh (though only the european version, and even that could do with a touch up) - the graphics dont need to be any better than that, but many people see it as a ps2 with mc
(if you do think that, go here: http://revoeyes.blogspot.com/2007/07/wii-has-more-power-than-you-think.html
i didnt write it by the way)

but mario with hd graphics would be nice

I'd rather story and gameplay improve at this point. Also I like how the OP makes no mention of the Wii yet people automatically jump to that.

Well, isen't the reason that games can't run splitscreen anymore because of the graphics?
Just leave graphics how they are and focus on gameplay.
:p Will games go downhill when games look like real life?

Sure graphics can get better, but they should focus a lot more on making most other aspects of the games better, since they're more important than shiny graphics, and because high-end graphics are already kick-ass.

Though I wouldn't mind some virtual reality, or 3d (like movie theaters are starting to use)

I'd really like to think that if developers stopped thinking about "better" graphics that they might actually spend more time on the game itself, and get us a generation of real gems.

That said, I was happy with 2D personnally, for me Baldur's Gate 2 looks far better than Neverwinter Nights 2 for example. Perhaps Dragon Age will get closer to a 3D equivalent.

I think the most important thing is good art direction, creating a style that suits the game you're making and helps the player immerse themselves in the game.

The only thing we need to work on if anything is animation itself. We need no improvements in fancy gimmicks like real time Radiosity, Bubble Meshes, Adaptive texturing, not even Dyncamic shadows. Just plain and simple "How Stuff Moves".

One of the finest examples of that for me would be the classic Flashback. Great animation on the PC.

Meh what I don't get is why you are all against graphics updates. It seems silly me to deny progress before you have even seen the finished product. If everybody were against progress like this we wouldn't have the graphics we have today in the first place. The sole reason graphics are getting better is because us (the consumer) buy more games with new graphics than those with old, dated graphics, which logically means that while many of you are voicing that we don't need new graphics, the moment they come out you all still leap on them.

The Wii does not need better graphics.

It needs less shovelware, more actual games that aren't Imagine babies, more good use of the wiimote and HD.

Better graphics are always good, but it's a natural thing.
When one gen ends, the better looking gen begins.
Right now, The current consoles look fine.
Wii is an odd one. It can actually handle pretty good graphics, but what holds it back is processing power.
I laugh when Wii fanboys try to argue that the Dead Rising port was good. Modern games are getting much more crazy with active environments, and wii cant handle that much going on.

I do think graphics should improve. The Holy Grail should be photorealistic graphics at a manageable framerate but obviously we're still a long way off. As it stands, graphics look very nice so developers can ease off working themselves to death to make things even prettier and should focus on efficiency - i.e, how they can create the same graphical effect using fewer system resources - and modularity.

I don't know how many of you have seen the rendering equation but it is truly a fearsome sight to behold. Designers deserve a lot of kudos for building graphics engines that can mimic its effects without melting the PCs that run them.

There is no point in focusing on one aspect being graphics or the gameplay. Since many years ago industry separated programmers from graphics artists and from game designers. I go for better graphics 'cuz there is an immense potential in computer power which currently goes unused. And let's not say that it's fine as it is. We haven't seen the future. Just remember how good Doom looked compared to Wolfenstien. Nobody even though how much better it can be (well maybe except for those who knew how Moore's law works).

Goldeneye103X2, I want you to go to Google Images, type in "ray tracing" and answer that question yourself. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Most certainly no...maybe in another 5 years...but i'm quite content with what we have now. Story and gameplay should be priority.

Think graphics are fine. My first computer was a intel 8088 " PC clone" with no graphics. You had to draw a pictures using x's. Ah those were the days ;)

No. I don't see what's wrong with todays graphics. They are good enough for everything. Sure you could improve them but that wouldn't change a thing.

Yes they can and they will get better. They will not stop even when games have almost reality like graphics.
