I'll repost just for the hell of it. No need to get snippy unpronounceable poster name.

I've been playing games since the original Nintendo, and this has always been my stance. Good graphics are a good thing, but not at the expense of game play. If the ignorant masses think "Oh it's graphics are amazing that totally makes up for it's lack of game design" they're wrong. Blizzards graphics are laughable at, but they have some of the best games in the world.

Crysis had amazing graphics, but was a mediocre shooter. Same thing with Far Cry 2. Graphics should only be used to enhance game play not be game play.
Did... did you just report xmetatr0nx? This will not end well.

I should add I do feel we have been almost spoiled by graphics these days and I do wonder how much further they can go. So yes, graphics do matter, just compare RE1 to RE5 or the first and last MGS releases. I just wish publishers would have faith and a bit more imagination.

Graphics are a nice touch, especially when it comes to explosions and fire..When you blow up a car and the gas tank goes..it can be very pretty.

Knowing that when you fired that weapon, that in fact you did headshot that enemy and you can see the results..that's always nice.

Gears of War 2 being the example.

Call of Duty W@W and Call of Duty 4 do not look as good as their PC versions, yet my computer's processing power is less than that of the 360.
I really noticed that when I transitioned from PC COD4 online adversarial to COD4 360 online adversarial and COD:W@W online adversarial. I miss having that extra bit of graphics finesse

But for my contribution: Graphics don't make a game. This is proven by Final Fantasy 7, one of the most popular RPG's of all time, which is 13 years old and still sold 100,000 copies on PSN within a week.

the only reason it sold that well is nostalgia

I would say that they only matter to the extent of if you can tell what you are looking at and if they interfere with the gameplay or not. For example Mercenaries 2 for the PS2 had horrible graphics where you couldn't even tell what you were looking at and don't load until you drive on the particular part of scenary. So graphics matter but only to a certain degree.

Graphics don't really don't do much for games, and probably is a detriment to it.
I think anyone who has been playing games for a long time notices how when a game moves toward further realism, in graphics and physics, the more and more the gameplay suffers. There hasn't been anything particularly fun or different lately.

BioShock and anything by Valve are pleasant exceptions, though.

You could have the best graphics in the world, but without gameplay there is no point to a game.

Whenever I look at a game I always look at the gameplay and story, not the graphics. I can only think of one time when I criticized a game for bad graphics: Star Wars The Force Unleashed on the Wii. I know the Wii isn't a graphics powerhouse, but the graphics in that game, mostly for the ships, looked like they had been dragged off the PS1.

They matter to some extent to me as I find it much easier to get immersed in a beautiful world. I don't care about this to a point that I won't play a game because of it's graphics.

Regardless how powerful your computer is: take your favorite video game, and turn every alterable video setting to absolute minimum. Play the game for an hour or two. Is it just as fun as with the shininess? More because of less distraction? Less because of visual idiosyncrasies?

for the 12.8, go play DwarfFortess then re post saying sorry.
best... game... ever (kinda).

Graphics are a nice touch, but past a certain point it doesn't matter. (That certain point being good enough that I know what is going on, which changes between types of games) That point is actually fairly low for me, I can't play dwarf fortress without mayday universal, and while not directly related to grapics, I can't play early shooters because of the controls (I'm looking at games like doom and marathon for this. can't stand the early 3d). But otherwise, I really don't care how much better than that it looks. That doesn't mean it's not nice to have the game good looking, it just means I don't care.

graphics are the mainstay of any game it helps to create emmersion and a sense of realism without good graphics as they can be very useful to tell storeys and relay the gameplay,
hence all our games would be 2D scrollers like pacman and will find it hard to create a storey without masses of text

graphics matter to an extent. graphics need to be there to support, and not to hinder, the rest of the game. In older generations developers had to work around the limitations of consoles, and were still able to make great games.

though I think as time passes on the standards of what is graphically unappealing are getting ever higher and higher. Take myself as an example, the NES was the first console/games hat I ever played, and anything before that, arcade games, commodore, Atari, all those games generally look like total rubbish to me and I've hardly played any games older than the NES.

Well I really cannot agree less with you, some of the most hyped up graphics and cut scene farting wonders like MGS4, Killzone2, God of War are the LEAST immersive games EVER TO BE CREATED.

If immersion was depended on graphics how come I am still totally immersed in old games like DEUS EX, Half Life and so on, to be honest they fucking hurt my eyes till they bleed but it is worth it.

But here is Killzone 2 graphics up the bum spouting out cut scenes from the mouth and I just keep asking myself, why am I fighting a ground war? Why am I not bombing the shit out of this planet? Why am I sent down to the ground to invade a city while I could have just been dropped straight down into the palace, why are we fighting such a costly attrition war when we have a billion space ships in orbit that could take out enemy installations from across the galaxy?

Now because people spent most of those years hyping on graphics they totally forgot the story. PoP another casualty in the Graphics versus story battle, years of developping an art style which would have looked sweet if the gameplay didn't annoy you so much you'd rather play through the game to see the ending, which is completely out of your hands and undoes ALL the things you worked for playing the game by a decision YOU the player would never make in a beautiful and immersion shattering gameplay-cutscene.

The fact is story and gameplay can safe any game, how many Zelda's have been laid out in front of us, but it is still fine because the story is sort of different each time and graphics didn't even change a pixel for like 3-4 games and they still sold. We just get a peek more into a fantastic world that will hopefully evolve further the next time we come back. The fact that God of War sold is not immersion, nor graphics, it was violence, button mashing evil violence. The fact that Kratos had no social blocker of the amount of pain he could dish out or how big an ass he could be made God of War sell, I will never forget the Captain he pushed down a hydra's throat after taking his amulet before using him as a stepping stone to prevent falling into Hades.

That is another IMPORTANT part of making a game, character development. Most characters now are either American or stupid, this presents a problem to the rest of the world who can relate to neither. When the prince spouted of in his American accent I quickly lost interest in him as a character. But when Kratos did it it was OK because he talked in a slightly accented American plus we have an ancient story NARRATOR which explains WHY everything is English, we are seeing a retelling.

It is Story and Gameplay (and characters) that drive games not graphics. The sooner developers realise that having new graphics is cool, we like seeing our hero's look more and more like us, but when it is graphics over gameplay be prepared not to get my money.
