This forums is full of people who try to act Japanese so I expect Eastern will get a lot of votes.

Despite having a Japanese mother myself, I do have to admit I prefer Western.

I'm not sure if the OP means the animation in specific, or the piece of animated material as a whole, but I could never get behind anything Eastern because of the stilted writing and irritating characters. I'll be the first to say that the West produces irritating characters, too, but the East seems like they've made it their fucking mission.

They both have their pro's and con's but I'd say I lean towards the eastern side a bit, mainly for the fact that most anime's tell a story through the whole series, each episode relating to the last while the majority of western animated shows, each episode is its own story with very little continuity between each episode. The only western show I can think of that told a story through the whole series was "Avatar: The Last Airbender" which was a pretty good show but there practically no other western shows in that format. Basically I like eastern animation more because they tend to feel more like one really long movie rather than several half-hour shorts.

East, because they DON'T automatically assume animation has to be for kids, and therefore, it doesn't automatically half-suck to watch if you're not a kid.
Yet, West is slowly coming around, but not fast enough, and not in large enough volumes.
For now, East. Still. Even if just barely.

Depends, personally I think the 'Eastern Style' is better, overall.

However, there are some great 'Western Style' products that come out (Toy Story 3, for example).

I like both the western and eastern animation styles, though these days the lines are becoming very blurred. I used to prefer the western animation style from the 90's, but during the 98-07 period there was a shift in the western animation style to emulate and copy the eastern animation style that I really didn't like...

*whoo*...tough call. I've seen good examples of both recently...

Well, if I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Eastern, but only because I've seen more shows in that style recently. I've seen bad versions of both types, so I can't really say which one I like better.

Truth be told, though, I don't watch shows for the art. If the show has a good story to tell and well-portrayed characters to watch, I'll go for it.

Funny this is that Anime/manga was inspired BY western cartoons go figure and from things like Avatar: the last Airbender, Eastern Cartoons obviously have inspired western cartoons as well.

I prefer anime for the most part. My favorite show is Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is fully and completely American; however, my country is plagued with an ignorant and just plain stupid idea that cartoons are for kids, which is both a cause an effect of most western cartoons. Spongebob is the perfect example; stupid, pointless, idiotic. It exemplifies what America thinks animation is for. Japan, on the other hand, understands the potential of animation as a serious storytelling medium. Nothing has made me cry like Clannad did, and very few things have blown my intellectual side away like Death Note.

So in short, I find that Japan is more capable of making good animation, because America is ignorant and stupid in their approach to animation.
YOU TAKE THAT BACK! SPONGEBOB IS THE SINGLE GREATEST THING EVER TO EXIST IN THE UNIVERSE!

OT: I don't watch enough anime (ie. any) to be able to have much of an opinion so I guess I'll just go with western.

Ive found more that more eastern stuff keeps my attention or stimulates my artsy side than most western stuff.

This is a really unfair question, kinda like "which console is best". You don't play consoles, you play games.

To reapply that to this topic, I love Samurai Jack, Simpsons (best part are the hidden references to outside work), and Avatar, amongst others. However there are more Anime('s/s/sus/sus' whatever the plural is) that I thoroughly enjoyed.....no wait....scratch all that....

Its almost 50/50 now that I think about it =/
Yay neither one is better than the other!

Good day sir.

I'm a huge anime lover, but damned if I don't adore a large number of Western animations as well. Disney, old Cartoon Network, Avatar, French stuff, even Dreamworks once in a blue moon.

but my heart belongs to Bones, JC Staff, Kyoto Animation, 40C, Ghibli, Shaft, and the rest. <3

I'M AN ANIMATION NERD. WHAT CAN I SAY.

Dude uncool man. Unless of course your talking about everything made after the 3rd season in which I totally agree.

OP: Both have the good and the bad.

I have more favored shows from the east than the west, but I'm willing to give both a chance.

Hey, you're the guy I convinced to try some a few months back! But apparently you haven't... :(

Anyway, I still think you should try Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, or Clannad. Just sayin'. :D

Well the first little while at least had originality and creativity going for it, but it very quickly lost that and fell into a formulaic waste of existence. Very, very quickly. But point being, Spongebob has no meaning, even back when it was entertaining. Shows like Full Metal Alchemist or Death Note, on the other hand, are rife with depth, presenting interesting characters, epic stories, and plenty of philosophical and ethical subjects. That's something little American animation can claim, let alone Spongebob.
