It occurs to me that the Escapist has its fair share of anime fans, and I wanted to know what the site's general opinion of giant robot style anime such as Mobile Suit Gundam is, because in Japan its like their Star Wars, but if you mention it in the west people usually complain about not being able to follow the plot, or at least my friends do.

So do we like giant robot anime? All of it or just Real Robot (Gundam style series which use science or plausible pseudo science to explain the sci-fi elements) or Super Robot (Gigantor or Marzinger Z style series where attacks are performed via voice commands and everything is colourful) anime? What about western mech-based TV shows/films/games?

Also, anybody who can tell me what the thread's title is a reference to gets a special reward... by which I mean nothing.

Of course we like robots. It's the only reason Transformers got anywhere.
Before anyone asks: no, I don't like the transformers.

Not a fan of anime in general. Liked the "spider-mech" from Ghost in the Shell a lot, though.
I do enjoy western mech-stuff more, like Battletech/'Mechwarrior.

Megas XLR,
Robotech/Macross,
Heroic Age,
Code Geass,
The Original Transformers,
And lots of freakin' Gundam shows!

Go ahead. Ask me again if I did giant robots...

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Even though I've only seen Gundam Wing, G Gundam, TTGL, Evangelion, bits of Eureka 7 AND Code Geass (if you want to cant that), and footage from various Super Robot Wars games, I like all of what I've seen.

This really needs a 'Maybe' category.

I like some, I dislike others. Some Gundam sagas/series are good, while others bore me to sleep. I like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Big O, but not b/c of the mechs. It all depends really.

Indeed good sir.

Anyway, I've never seen Gundam, in fact, i've never watched a Robot anime...I tried once, but only got 10 minutes into the episode before the computer crashed. Can you recommend any?

*Cough* Transformers is an American cartoon (not an anime in even the remotest sense of the word: it doesn't have the same drawing or inking style, the same animation quality etc.) - drawn in America, inked in America, produced in America etc. The original show was an ad, more or less, for the toys (which came before the show). The original toys, on the other hand, started out as two seperate toylines (Microchange and Diaclone) made by a Japanese company called Takara. These were picked up by Hasbro, who received permission to sell the two toylines under one brand in the western world.

OT: I freaking love giant robots. They are made of win and filled with a creamy awesome filling.

Um, both of these are Japanese shows.

I never got into mecha anime that much, except for Martian Successor Nadesico, and I think that's mostly meant as a parody. (But then again, those other shows don't have Yurika in them! =P~ )
