I love mecha anime.
I love every genre of mecha anime, including ones that actually stars the robots themselves, or ones that only uses the robots to drive the main plot.
Mecha anime tends to be the most diverse meta-genre. It's probably because the idea of a robot itself encompasses so many themes, from honor (Gundam), humanity (Ghost in the Shell), which expands into religion and reality (Evangelion and the likes), or even sheer parody of it all (Gurren Lagan). And also, it tends to shift the focus away from series of events driving the plot and concentrate it onto a personification of sort. I think it's arguably one of the deepest and thought-provoking genre as far as anime goes. If you are able to get past the robots and explosions themselves, that is.

I never got into mecha anime that much, except for Martian Successor Nadesico, and I think that's mostly meant as a parody. (But then again, those other shows don't have Yurika in them! =P~ )
You think Nadesico is a parody show? I suppose it does have a lot of aspect that is not very serious, but I don't see what it is parodying. The Martians are a bit of a parody of the genre as a whole, but most of the story really doesn't seem like one.
By the way--does anyone know if battletech splintered out of Macross, or the other way 'round?
Also, has anyone ever seen a very old anime featuring a guy who crossed into a different dimension, where the natives have this weird tentacle thing coming off of their neck? It also has the macross robot in it, so I think it is related to Macross somehow.
The good thing about living in Thailand is that we sometimes get to see these hidden gem that are spin offs from really great series. For example, there is a version of the El Hazard--I don't remember the real name of the anime--that I have seen, but it's not even listed on anime encyclopedia.
