anime robots? not so much outside of transformers and i'm talking the original cartoon.
*Cough* Transformers is an American cartoon (not an anime in even the remotest sense of the word: it doesn't have the same drawing or inking style, the same animation quality etc.).
In the remotest sence of the word "anime"
Said word means sole or alive or something like that (Random Latin trivia FTW)

Yes, yes we do. I prefer western types though, robot Nixon from Futurama and Titans from 40K. Maybe it's just the shows they appear in but I just don't like the Japanese ones as much.

I love mecha anime.
I love every genre of mecha anime, including ones that actually stars the robots themselves, or ones that only uses the robots to drive the main plot.

Mecha anime tends to be the most diverse meta-genre. It's probably because the idea of a robot itself encompasses so many themes, from honor (Gundam), humanity (Ghost in the Shell), which expands into religion and reality (Evangelion and the likes), or even sheer parody of it all (Gurren Lagan). And also, it tends to shift the focus away from series of events driving the plot and concentrate it onto a personification of sort. I think it's arguably one of the deepest and thought-provoking genre as far as anime goes. If you are able to get past the robots and explosions themselves, that is.

I never got into mecha anime that much, except for Martian Successor Nadesico, and I think that's mostly meant as a parody. (But then again, those other shows don't have Yurika in them! =P~ )
You think Nadesico is a parody show? I suppose it does have a lot of aspect that is not very serious, but I don't see what it is parodying. The Martians are a bit of a parody of the genre as a whole, but most of the story really doesn't seem like one.

By the way--does anyone know if battletech splintered out of Macross, or the other way 'round?

Also, has anyone ever seen a very old anime featuring a guy who crossed into a different dimension, where the natives have this weird tentacle thing coming off of their neck? It also has the macross robot in it, so I think it is related to Macross somehow.
The good thing about living in Thailand is that we sometimes get to see these hidden gem that are spin offs from really great series. For example, there is a version of the El Hazard--I don't remember the real name of the anime--that I have seen, but it's not even listed on anime encyclopedia.

Liberty Prime yes. Gundams no. i like robots that are realistic. i dont think that we will need robots that walk like men and can swordfight. i mean. the mechs from mechwarrior were about as far as i would go, walking is far more mobile than rolling, but we will stick with tanks

Yeah, I dig 'em. Gundam Wing, Eureka 7 and of course Gurren Lagann, quite enjoyable to watch.

Give Gundam00 season 1 a try. You will love it. It's about as "real" as a giant robot series will ever get. For once, each MS do have an actual limitation of what they can and cannot do. And the emphasis is shifted to strategic planning and machine performance much more than crazy fights.

It occurs to me that the Escapist has its fair share of anime fans, and I wanted to know what the site's general opinion of giant robot style anime such as Mobile Suit Gundam is, because in Japan its like their Star Wars, but if you mention it in the west people usually complain about not being able to follow the plot, or at least my friends do.

So do we like giant robot anime? All of it or just Real Robot (Gundam style series which use science or plausible pseudo science to explain the sci-fi elements) or Super Robot (Gigantor or Marzinger Z style series where attacks are performed via voice commands and everything is colourful) anime? What about western mech-based TV shows/films/games?
To me it's all about MEGAS XLR !

why ?

because it's got everything we want form giant robots and aliens and space fighting

In gundam i thought there was a lack of action

in MEGAS XLR there was nothing but things getting blown up
plus there many referances to video games :) :) :)

But the story was what made Gundam (Or at least Gundam Wing) good, it had awesome robot fights but it also had a deep story which gave the impression not of heroes and villains but of people simply caught up in a war bigger than themselves, which is pretty impressive in a genre previously populated with the likes of Marzinger Z. Also, for the record, I love Megas XLR.

Megas XLR was the only Giant Robot cartoon/anime I ever watched. Besides a few gundam episodes, but I had no idea what was going on in those.
