In the past, if I liked a game, any future sequels would be an almost automatic purchase for me.

But after a string of disappointments, I have changed my thinking. These were not just disappointments. These were some of my favorite games, that got worse.

What seems more common today is developers taking what were basically Story-Free shooters, and cramming some a plot. The story lines simply weren't any good. Where does the sequel come in? Developers should stop trying to continue the story of a game that barely has on in the first place.

It used to be such a no brainer. If I liked a game, I would get the sequel.

Like diablo, get diablo 2
Like Drakan, get Drakan 2
Like Myth, get Myth 2
Like Jak and Daxter, LOVE Jak 2

The one safe bet I always had, is now dead. I now have to examine every game before buying as if it were a brand new franchise. I cant take anything for granted. Maybe that is why I am not currently looking forward to any sequel (except TES:V, I would sell my left nut for it)

What about you? Are there games that you currently know little or nothing about; but you are sure you will buy them, simply because it is a sequel to a favorite of yours?

It depends on the game. For Kingdom Hearts 3 I would gladly see your left nut and raise the entire package.

If the game ever comes out that is

Generally I will be interested in sequels if I liked the first game, but I do tend to be cautious if the title shows signs of sucking. I usually still research the title, wait for early reviews, and see what the game offers before taking the plunge.
For this reason I am somewhat cautious of Bioshock 2.

Usually. I don't think there's been a sequel to a game I didn't like.

I loved Assassin's Creed, but I wanted to know the rest of the story so I figure that it can't get any worse, so I buy it and its wonderful

I loved Silent Hill and we all know Silent Hill 2 is way better than 1.

All of the Zelda sequels are great.

Obviously the Metal Gear Series is fantastic (in my opinion)

The Jak series, as you, Pimppeter should know, are all great games.

I don't think there was a sequel that I liked less than the original.

I find myself buying sequels for the story than for the game's sake. I don't mind waiting for some though. for Kingdom Hearts, I have to get the English version as soon as I can. I'm getting a PSP for a single game, that is unheard of for me. other games like AC2, I can wait for a price drop.

No, past mistakes made me a much wiser consumer. Although faithfully I'll buy any Fallout, or Elder Scroll game.

Feck no. I view a sequel with healthy suspicion, in case they're trying to sell me exactly the same game again but wearing a dress.

Not if I'm too broke and not if the sequel seems like a cheap way to cash in on a good original. Otherwise, I guess I'm fine with buying it. (of course only if I liked the original first)

>_> yes, for me it is usually an automatic purchase, if I liked the first game. I don't really don't see what the point of sequels would be if they weren't based on the love of the first game.

I trust the makers of the game I love to put out another game with as much stand-alone strength as their first hit, just because that's good marketing. It would persuade new buyers to go back and buy the first one.
I have a feeling that most of the votes in this poll are made by those who feel the need to state "I am not a mindless sheep, I THINK about my choices!"...in reality, I'd be shocked if they didn't leap at sequels.

so what you're saying is....yes, yes you do buy sequels based of the success of their predecessor. You just contradicted yourself.

I don't usually have enough money to throw around that I can afford to buy games without knowing if they're any good or not. Even so, there are a couple of franchises that still cause me to change back into a wide-eyed ten year old boy who'd pay any price for the latest game from said franchise.

Those franchises would be Street Fighter and Final Fantasy, incidentally. They're the only games I'll buy without question. Not as though this strategy has never steered me wrong (SFEX 3, FFXII...), but at this point, it's kinda hardwired in.

I know exactly what you mean. Most sequels don't turn out to be as good as the first one (except Jak 2 and Jak 3, Didn't like Jak X but haven't tried Daxter on the PSP or The Lost Frontier yet, And Half Life 2 and the Episodes after that are awesome.) It's mostly the older games that gave better sequels, especially around the Playstation 1 Era. And to answer your question, I don't automatically buy sequels. I research a lot about them before I think. For example, I liked Modern Warfare 1, But I don't really like the look of Modern Warfare 2. I'll probably play the Campaign over a friend's house and that would be it, since I didn't really like the multiplayer on Modern Warfare 1.

Edit: Oh, almost forgot the Megadrive/Genesis, with Sonic 2, 3, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles which are awesome. I still play them to this day.

Kingdom Hearts 3? There isn't a Kingdom Hearts 2. The game they released in 2005 is a sick joke and the real second game no doubt is going to come out in 2012 for the PS3.

*looks down at his copy of Final Mix + and shakes his head in shame* ... A sick, sick joke...

Seriously, though, they aren't making it for a major console. In lieu of Kingdom Hearts 3 they're making Birth By Sleep on the PSP. My theory is that they want to avoid having to work with current development specs on modern consoles.

To be fair, storytelling isn't the only reason to release a sequel to a game. It also presents an opportunity for gameplay and technical improvements. Uncharted 2, which I'm surprised that you don't bring up being a Naughty Dog fan, is a vast refinement on everything done in the original game--and it's got more length and content to it as well.

To be fair, the gameplay improvements in the kinds of games you're talking about are generally marginal as well, so I agree with you. That's why I don't buy multiplayer shooters.

this

there are just some companies that make games where im like a zomgie and must have that next game...such as any bioware game and some bethesda and a few other ones. such as square enix games
