it all depends on the sequel. I'm glad I didn't buy Ultimate Alliance 2 and there's a part of me that says Mass Effect 2 will fall flat. As for Kingdom Hearts 3 and, Pokemon Heart Gold/ Soul Silver ... well, those are pretty much must buys once they are made/ brought to the U.S.

No. I always maintain a 'wait and see' policy regarding games, sequel or otherwise, actually esp. sequels.

If it's Bioware or Blizzard. Otherwise, no. Neverwinter Nights 2 taught me that lesson.

This happened with Halo 2, I liked it so much I convinced my mom to get me a 360 so I could play Halo 3 when it came out.

It all depends on the team working on it. I didn't buy Fallout 3, and still won't, because the team who wrote it and coded it didn't work on it, so I won't buy it - because, imho, it isn't a proper sequel. It'd be like reading the sequel to a Stephen King novel written by that chick who wrote Twilight. Or even worse, reading a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Sequel written by Eoin Colfer.

So - my criteria :

If it's the same gaming style, (with or without a new engine), written and coded by the team who did the prior release - then, yes I'll buy it. Anything else - hell naw.

Depends on the series, the developer, and whether my tastes have changed at all since the last installment.

Depends on the game series, and sometimes I will wait to see how well it is received before I buy the sequel. For instance, Heroes of Might and Magic II and III were great, Heroes IV and V... not so much.

when it comes to gaming, the sequels are often bigger, better and with much more money pumped into them, so as a general rule if i liked a game i'll buy the sequels until one of them is poor. it's why i bought "ratchet and clank: size matters" for the PS2 even though it turned out to be truly pathetic. the sort of game you try to play for about 10 minutes before you give up in actual anger at the developers.

generally though, if i have the money, i've found buying sequels in gaming is a rewarding idea.

I won't get a sequel unless I've played the first game, usually. If there are mitigating circumstances (previous game was on a now-defunct console) or it's in a genre not reknowned for story telling (beat-em-ups, for instance) I'm usually willing to waive that. I picked up Soul Calibur 2 but hadn't played the first one, for example.
