I do tend to avoid them not merely because I feel like my point of view will most likely either be ignored or has already been said, but also because of the fact that by the end of the larger threads, the topic of conversation has switched so drastically, that anything that I say will not only not be relevant any longer, but will also be ridiculed for being off topic.

Bastards...

This.
OR, that my opinion has already been said.

Then what's the point?

EDIT: Ninja'd!

B. Feel like whatever I have to say has probably already been said.
See? Point made.
And look, Run! We agree on something! Hooray!

I really don't feel like reading over four pages of posts on a topic, and most other people won't either. Your contribution to the discussion = (# of your posts) / (posts total), so once that other number gets large, your post matters very little.

I'll read the OP and skim as much as catches my interest. If the thread as a whole proves enticing, I'll read it thoroughly, bookmark, then reply. However, the Holiday Council is just a point of "hell no" when it comes to 70 or so pages. I don't have that much time I'm afraid.
I'm with Labyrinth on this. If it's 300 pages long but really interesting, I might follow the lot and chuck a post in. If it's not.. I'm offski.

During my lurking period, I went through all the pages in off topic discussion. I however would generally refuse to read anything that didn't go over one page.

Except if it is something like "the holiday council" or crap like that, I just don't see myself reading one of those.

I'm going to laugh if this turns into a large thread.
But, generally, I don't really like them. Good ones, yeah.

who has the time to read all the posts on a massive thread so you always run the risk of being repetitive

I don't tend to pay much attention to the number of pages. If it piques my interest I'll check it out, then if there is a lot of replies, I might leave it there, as arguments are probably already circling that say my opinion.

Depends on the topic and the quantity of users that have posted. If there is a meaningful discussion going on, I usually consider it worth reading and contemplating on. There are other variants though, and that would include art threads or threads of <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.82574?page=1>this kind.

My motto is, I"If ya don't read the entire thing, you have no right to be posting in it." So, I tend to avoid some longer threads.
