Personally I think backwards compatibility is very important. It gives people more options and it?s always good to have options.

It's very convenient, yes, but is it a deal breaker? Not really. It cuts down console costs and gives me an excuse to blow the dust off my older machines.

I'm glad that there isn't more backwards compatibility. It gives the companies an excuse to raise prices for a problem that I can solve by taking something out of my closet and plugging it in. For me, it is an unneeded feature.

backwards compatibility for me is vital, just becuase a game is old doesnt mean it stopped being good.
It's vital at the begining of a consoles life due to lack of new games and a ton of older games. I think a better question would have been.

If your PS3 went out would you.

a. Search out the globe for a 60 or 80 gig with backwards compat
b. Run to the nearest store and pick up a 120 gig without

Part of the reason I went with 360 over PS3 was even if I got the PS3 I still wouldn't be able to play my PS2 games (never had an original Xbox). It's pretty annoying that companies have stopped supporting backwards compatibility, but now I just have to make sure and take really good care of my PS2.

Meh, I don't really care that much, so long as older games are still available in SOME format.

Nintendo's nailed this with the Virtual Console. Sure, you have to pay for them, but it's nice to know that older games are still available in some format.

PSN have gotten a lot better with PSone classics. For me I'm sold, as those were the majority of games I played growing up. Every time the subject of backwards compatibility comes up people are usually referring to the PS3's lack of PS2 compatibility. I know it's possible for them to implement, but I actually read somewhere that they didn't in the newer versions because of compatibility issues. The system has to basically emulate the games in order to play them. Emulating PSone's is laughably easy and takes a small amount of power and little software and hardware maintenance. Since it was easy to implement and was cost efficient, Sony included it on all models of the PS3. Now, I don't know the details, but I am aware that the older versions of the PS3 that do have BC had many falts and some games had many bugs. This is most likely due to the fact that the PS2 is a much more powerful system (which makes sense because emulating a PS2 game with a constant 60fps takes a very powerful PC even today - I'm talking Quad Cores to get the most out of the experience). With the PS3 slim out and about, it makes sense that Sony would cut some corners and completely remove BC of PS2 games in order to save tons of money.

That's not saying I wouldn't love being able to download PS2 games off of PSN, that would be awesome. That's why this Christmas I invested in a new PS2. Makes things a lot easier. Not only that, but most games are dirt cheap everywhere you go, and they would probably be more if they were on sale on PSN. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

To me, backwards compatability is a deal breaker. Which is why i stick to pc gaming. In 10 years Ill still be able to play games on it from 1990s, unless new OS's wont allow it.

Definitely, if I could play PS2 games and import saves to PS3 I would sell my PS2. I also ever had an original xbox so I would love to play some of the games on 360 but most of them are gltiched to shit.

Honestly, I don't really care for backwards compatibility. I already have a PS2 anyway, but that's not the point. It's nice to have backwards compatibility for older consoles, but it's not much of a deal breaker for me. That's what those new Playstation Collections are for, the PS2 isn't going to last forever, and eventually it's game library will dissipate along with it. The collections keep the games of yore updated and still alive while also being a good deal.

yeah i really wish i had gotten one of the backward compatible ps3's =\

its a great feature, but not necessarily a deal breaker.

however, if i was choosing between two consoles, such as the ps3 and 360, and they each had equal good games on them from the previous generation, i'd probably go with the one that had better backward compatibility, due to the awesome nostalgia of older games that i can still play on it.

When my DS Phat became nearly unusable last year, I had two options:

A) Buy a DS Lite

or

B) Buy a DSi

I went with the DS Lite because I'd lost my SP several years beforehand and I still love my GBA games. I don't regret that decision at all.

I really like backwards compatibility, I like being able to play my older games without wasting space with the older console. The PS3 BC issues are not a deal breaker per se but it is a pretty big inconvenience and I do have to shake my head at all the HD remakes of PS2 games. I'm one of those folks what still has a regular old SDTV, so I don't really see the appeal of buying games again that are just shinier versions of old favorites.

I'm a PC only gamer, so it doesn't really concern me.
I do keep an old Windows 98 for smooth playing of those really old classics.

I don't care tbh. It would be a nice feature for my PS3, but I got a PS2 right next to it if I would want to play some old games. My obsession with trophies has made me unable to play games without them however, so it doesn't matter.
