It can be awesome, and it can do a lot to help the atmosphere and increase the immersion - Right up until it starts fucking up the gameplay(See GTA4). For me the joy in games is the wide variety of styles of games out there, I love everything from Fallout to Blazblue to Red Faction Guerrilla to Burnout.

Why split games into the binary choice of realistic or not realistic, they are games, if you can have fun with them then that's all that should matter.

Push. Some games need it some don't. If I ever see a gritty dark Ratchet and Clank game I will be perturbed. I also want Socom to look real the day JRPG characters are suiting up to for a Rainbow 6 op we as a society will loose.
Not the exact same thing but...

Time to move out???
/society loss

Screw society I want that.

I like a little bit of realism but other than that I prefer games to not be realistic.

example: GTA SA is a classic in my opinion

I have yet to buy, or beyond demos even play a realistic/military shooter. The setting and characters don't appeal to me in the slightest, the gameplay features that come with them are simply off-putting and my hatred for them is magnified when I see them infecting potentially fun games like AvP with their terrible playstyles.

So yeah. No. Go away, realism. Ironically, nothing is more unrealistic in games than pretend-reality. The Mushroom Kingdom, Princely Persia and Combine-invaded HL-Earth have internal consistent logic. Inoffensivestan and Liberty City show you what the world would look like if invisible walls were real. The Uncanny Valley doesn't just apply to human faces.

Excessive realism can be down right boring at times, so I tend to prefer something that's styled more like an action movie than real life. When it comes to physics and art style, real life makes for a fairly dull gaming experience.

Ultra-realistic character models still fall fairly deep in the uncanny valley, so a more unrealistic touch is always appreciated.

I'd much rather play Halo or Resistance than any of the two dozen Modern Warfare clones that are stagnating the market right now, and I'd much rather play a game with a sense of visual style instead of one that just copied real life instead of hiring an art director.

Realistic graphics? Don't care
Arbitrarily break the rules you've established? That's a game breaker. Doesn't matter is the game is based on reality or fantasy, they all require rules to make them work (even if that rule is "anything goes"). Break the rules and break the game.

Well, it depends. I don't really care if Mario (as freedomweasel pointed out) games, for example, are realistic. But I was annoyed in regard to how you could hold down the trigger when shooting the pistol in Grand Theft Auto IV, allowing it to shoot in an automatic fashion. If a gun is semi-automatic, I want that to be reflected in the controls.

It depends on the game. If the game takes place in the real world (any era) I expect to be realistic to the point where it doesn't affect how fun the game is. If it is not, then I couldn't care less as long as it makes sense in the games reality. For example, in a game like Kingdom Hearts, moves that are CLEARLY impossible in real life look completely possible, so cool looking combos and magic don't seem out of place.

I don't care if a game is realistic or not as long as it plays by it's own rules. If the game is meant to be a "realistic" shooter i don't want to be able to fall 500ft and land without a scratch (and where the hell does he keep all those para-shoots...?), or have my small caliber weapons shooting through anything stronger than plywood. Same with Fantasy games if they're telling me this guy is human, i don't want to see him doing anything superhuman without an explicit magical explanation, unless he uses magic all the time, then i feel it's implied.

That said, the "realistic" mechanics should compliment the game-play and not just get in the way.

Put realism where it is best suited. For instance: take the recent dead rising 2. If the game were realistic: One zombie bite = infection. However both the gamers and devs realized how much this would limit the gameplay and decided to overlook that small detail.
However, I wouldnt be against a realistic zombie survival game. Using tools, skills, and an involved inventory to survive in a wider and more varied world, where one zombie bite could end it all, and you have to use your wits, rather than a motorcycle straped with dual chainsaws to survive.
Both sides of the coin, realism and fantasy, are fun if done right.

My favorite Sam and Max quote:

(On the Moon)

SAM: So let me get this straight. We can breathe here then?
MAX: I guess those candy-butt astronauts didn't have the stones to try it.
SAM: I could never say that about an astronaut.

So, no.

Well it isn't a must have but can sometimes be good and in the case of "Fallout: New Vegas" it may bring new awesomeness to a already good franchise.
