I cringe. Especially when it has parents saying how "confusing" the rating system is. Adam Sessler put it best, "Let's see what the GTAIV label says: 'Rated M, 17+'. Let's see what the back says, 'Intense violense, partial nudity, drud and alcohol use, (etc).' Where's the fucking mystery?"

If it's in a negative light, I cringe with enough force to scare away small animals and scatter paper.

Yes, because the media has yet to understand two facts:

1. Games are not all for kids. That big black M has a deeper meaning to it (note: will actually play certain M games with my younger brother...after I have decided if they have anything that would ruin his psyche at all)

2. They (the reporters) most likely heard the same things growing up listening to rock and roll, with apparently no mental harm. Therefore, what are the chances that the new scapegoat will actually have an effect?

On a little side note, am I a bad brother for letting my brother play/watch me play M games if I have played them first to decide if there is anything that he shouldn't see, instead of just forbidding him from all M games?

I heard the media once using the argument "In videogames, you are in control of who to kill, you can look at someone and say 'im going to kill them'" This apparently, is wrong and causes you to be violent in real life

But putting in a Rambo DVD whilst thinking "I cant wait to watch all of those gory deaths" is A-OK!

Aren't the staff here at Escapist journalists?
No way!
This is a magazine, most of them are editors and journalists. Only they know what the are talking about, as they most likely play games.

I voted "lols :)" for no reason. I actually think that it depends if it's praise, accomplishments, tragedy or a parody of the game in question that motivates my opinion.

Yeah... having a game in the news is never good, you never hear

"Video game saves an orphanage: tonight at 9"

it's always

"Violent video games, could they cause your kid to turn into a killer? find out at 9"

... *Sigh*
*Looks at Today Tonight with resentment*

Same here.

Isn't it fun when uninformed people start pointing the finger? I can't believe they've started to blame Metal again, what a bunch of butt. People are just afraid of the unknown or something that is new, if it's incredibly popular there has to be aspects of it that are totally bad for you. It's a load of rubbish.

To answer the thread, I not only cringe but I shift in my seat uncomfortably each time I see anything game related on the news. Though when I heard that Halo 3 was outselling pretty much everything when it came out, I have to admit I was proud of the games industry that day even though I don't really care for the Halo franchise.

I always cringe a little. Even if it isn't negative news for the game. I cringe more when I see bullshit shows like that MTV show "Play Us!" (About a all female CS-clan) or what it's called. It's just embarrasing. Especially because they are shit compared to other top clans. Not that I like Counter Strike. Quite the oppsite.

Oh and I don't like MTV either.

I cringe a little, yeah. I always do when I hear someone talking about games like they know what's what, when in fact, they do not.

Case in point: I was watching local news one morning before hopping on the bus. The Super Smash Brothers Brawl Midnight Launch had gone down the previous night (or earlier that morning, depending on how much you want to nitpick). Must have been a slow news day, because my station decided to do a bit of fluff news on it.

Typical "games in the news" stuff; if the game isn't billed as a "murder simulator", the fans are portrayed as rabid, obese and lacking in hygiene skills. I wasn't surprised. As we all know, this kind of stuff is hardly new.

No, what made me cringe was when this ditzy anchor starts talking about the game like she's so thrilled to be discussing it.
"The game, which allows players to participate in virtual battles with popular video game mascots, was released last night for the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii."
See, it's actually a fairly accurate description, which leads me to believe that maybe, just maybe, someone actually did a little fact checking for this story. It's that last part that sends the whole thing down the crapper.

I cringed. I got over it. I got on the bus, and told myself that I had to stop watching local news first thing before leaving the house.

Whenever I see that happening, I play a little game. I get a beer and take a drink every time someone says 'Columbine' or 'Jack Thompson'. I'm usually wasted in the first 5 minutes.

I usually notice 3 types of video gaming news in newspapers or on T.V:
-Violent games make violent people
-Nintendo have money coming out of their arses
-Some relatively unkown games company is demanding money for copyright or patent issues

all cringeworthy
