I've been lucky in that I've more or less been my own boss since the mid-90's. It all started with a bike messenger gig, then I worked for a Private Investigation Agency for a while, but then once again became a freelancer.
Now I have a shiny new multimedia diploma, a freelance design/photography gig and so many different directions to go. Being your own boss isn't for everyone though, a lot of things you take for granted when you work for someone else suddenly become
your responsibility, but in my opinion the freedom is worth the sacrifice. Especially when one day I can be designing a poster and building a website and the next doing a photoshoot with a lingerie model. And no, I don't care if you believe me. You don't know who my clients are
So make your decisions wisely, those of you that are still in school. You might think that my life is awesome and you want to be your own boss, but that also means dealing with more bullshit than you have EVER dealt with before in your life. If you can handle it and have the discipline, go for it. If you don't think you can do it, go work for someone else but don't get trapped in a job you hate! Find something you like to do and get a job doing that, but the day you wake up and say "Aw fuck, I have to go to
work" is the day you should start looking for something else, even if it means a pay cut. Being miserable and well paid still means you're miserable. Take it from a former wage slave, staying at a job you hate so you can afford to buy things you don't need (Thanks Tyler Durden) will kill your soul faster than watching a Full-House marathon on mushrooms.
But I digress...
