I normally play as females because females are attractive to me. I'd rather be looking at one of them than a guy for 20 to 40 hours.

On the other hand, my girlfriend normally plays men because she can't stand the bikini armor they always put the females in.

Yes but I am a man most of the time so I can romance girl characters. I will replay a game to see different female dialogue, or in the rare case that none of the females are ideal relationship material. I will be a woman and go for the men I befriended on my male play through.

Often though you may be limited to pre made characters and one of the girl ones may just be more likeable/better. Like the siren I played in borderlands.

Well it is an RPG after all. I'm supposed to be something I'm not, sort of lol Yeah, I do.

If I'm playing something online or only once, I'm usually going to pick my gender first and be a girl, but if I'm replaying it often and there are different story options for a male, then yeah I'll make a male character.

Stop with the excuses. Why the fvck wouldn't you play with a woman if given the choice? Unless you like males, of course.

Yes, but pretty much always on a play through that is after my first time through. I first started doing it in KOTOR since I was told there was different dialogue depending on your gender. While it wasn't that substantial, I just kind of kept doing it, even in games that don't have dialogue options like the Fable series.

I usually play as a male Character first, then a female character after to see what differs. Same with games with a good or Evil end, just do whichever I didn't first...

Male here, I pretty much always play a female in RPG's/MMO's if I can. Because I get enough of playing as a male due to being...y'know...male IRL :p not to mention if I'm going to be forced to play a characters for hours and hours, I'd rather be staring at a female ass/figure than a male one.

If the game has a romance element then I'll probably play as male, wouldn't want to end up in an awkward situation of playing as a female and being forced to romance a male (unless lesbian relationships are offered, in which case it's a win/win hahaha).

For me immersion comes primarily from gameplay, story, aesthetics, overall feel, etc. My character's gender is largely irrelevant. For example I played all Mass Effect games as fem-shep through and through, enjoyed every second of it. Good thing too, I felt fem-shep's voice acting was better (i.e. less boring to listen to) than the male one. All of my time in WoW and GW2 has also been on female characters.

I'm about 50/50 on which gender I'll play as. For me, it's like choosing a class the first time I play a game: a whim.

Yes. Not all the time, but more often that not. Not really sure why though. It's not just to look as a woman's ass rather than a man's. Well, not always. I imagine it's similar to why I usually don't play humans when there are other races available. I like to put myself outside of my element when I roleplay. Different species, so why not a different gender while I'm at it?

If the main character has a set personality like in Mass Effect, I'll choose male at least for the first playthrough. If the main character doesn't really have much of a personality like in Skyrim, I'll choose female at least for the first playthrough.

Not really sure why, I just noticed this about myself recently.

I'm a Role Player in my RPGs. It's 99% about the story and basically playing Grown Up Pretend. As such, I don't play females more often, since I can't really get into the AVERAGE female mindset, but if the material lets me play variations on female characters, I have fun with that. Half of my The Old Republic characters were female, since there's lots of material (in the expanded universe, at least) I could use as reference for my character's thought process. In Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, I play almost exclusively as males, since there aren't all that many post-nuclear-apoc females, or Fantasy Females worth a damn outside of their cup sizes. In those situations, I can't really get into a character that I can't understand, and thus fall back on my MaleMind.

Every now and then. Sometimes I play different races and such too, ya know?

When playing with friends(like baldurs gate) it can be fun to just skip through character creator as fast as you can, clicking on random stuff(but not for stats and classes; kinda important to think about those) and then just roll with what you got. It can make things more interesting and/or hilarious. Especially if you make a little effort to stay in character some of the time.

I choose male when given a choice as i like to role play as myself and as im male it helps with the immersion. I have played as female characters but normally always on replays of the game to see the other dialogue options.

Almost always pick to play as a girl if I am given the option. The reason being that games almost exclusively have male protagonists so I always jump at the chance to play as a woman just for something different.

Usually I make a guy for the first run through, but make female characters all the time the second time round. It's kinda fun. Also, they sometimes get different dialogue, and they ALWAYS get the nicer clothes.

Nah.

When an RPG gives me the choice to create my own character, chances are it's A) in first-person and I won't see my character anyway, and/or B) the character will be silent and my choice of gender will only be cosmetic, rather than impacting any part of the game in any way.

So I just generally play as a dude. Never been super inclined to play as a lady when it serves no purpose.

Always, always, always. I have to play as a dude 9 times out of 10 of every other instance, so almost the only time I get to step into the shoes of the opposite sex is when the decision is left up to me rather than developers/consumers who haven't outgrown their cootie-phobia.

I'll swap between the two depending on the game. I often take table-top characters I've played before and "convert" them into the game I'm playing. It just depends.
