Poll: Do you hate JRPG's?

Yes.
I don't like the gameplay that seems inherent to JRPGs (turn-based combat,) or the fact that you can't interact with the story as much as, say, Mass Effect.

Two questions.

Spoiler: One: How is that inherent to the genre?

Two, isn't that sort of interaction more the domain of an open-world game, rather than an RPG of any kind?

There's usually a crucial piece of the whole story that you have to chuck out the window to get the game rolling.

If you ignore the one "Wait, why are these guys together..." or "Wait, why is he the bad guy?" or "Why on earth is he doing that?" things usually work themselves out fine.

And to those who can't disgunish the men or women, that's awfully strange. The men are the thin, lean characters. The women are the thin, lean characters with breasts the size of small cars on their chest.

Failing that, in general for characters in anime/manga/games, the best bet is to go for the eyes. If the eyes are blocky, chances are it's a guy. Rounded mean it's female.

That's not a hard or fast rule either, since sometimes they want to emphasize a character's masculinity or femininity.

Well he hates all the CRAP games, as alot of games that come out now are crap, its obvious that most reviews will spout how crap they are..

bring out a GOOD game.. and Yatzhee will praise it on high.

I strongly dislike JRPG's.

But that's more because I absolutely despise anime/manga/whatever they call their style of animation/drawing and Japanese popular culture than that I despise their roleplying games.

Also, when compared to Black Isle/Bioware games, everything is annihilated.

In general I dislike JRPGs, but I really liked The World End With You, and I think I've just worked out why - no random battles! The player is free to grind, but it's entirely optional. Plus the characterisation was amazing compared most JRPGs - there was actually character progression! Still had an emo protagonist though...

What? Phantasy Star 4 was the first video game I played. I still have the Genesis cartridge.

I quite like JRPGs. Most, anyway. I liked FF6, 7, 9 and 10, but couldn't stand 8 or 12. each game is different, and I try to judge them all by themselves, not as a genre.

It's true, turn-based combat is a drag sometimes, and a lot of characters have the spiky hair and unreasonable sword, but that's Japan's cool (the characters). America's cool is armoured space marines with unreasonable guns. Get over it.

I think FFX-2 did the turn-based combat right, even if it wasn't a particularily great game otherwise. It was pretty fast and had a tendancy of making me forget that combat was turn-based at all.

This isn't entirely true. He's admitted his own bias against certain entire genres(JRPGs in particular) so it should come as no surprise that he is entirely likely to completely rip apart any game that falls outside of his comfort zone. It's just his style to do so. The secret is that if he makes any positive comment about a game, no matter how briefly, the game is probably at least worth a rent.

On the other hand, if you are a fan of genres that Yahtzee isn't interested in, perhaps you shouldn't be looking to Zero Punctuation as your primary review source.

Luck man, I some how missed out on 4 for years. And it was probley the best of the series.

To me, turn based combat in a stratigy rpg type game is all you can do.
My complaint with real time combat, even worse one that allows special moves is the cpu will do them all the time. Look at the Mortal Kombat games, where you have full health then magicly on the last blow that needs to be landed they go CPU-Fu on you and pull out a win, and all you needed to do was fart on someone. Even the Warcraft games, you make a unit but before you made the 1st, they have micromanaged everything and made 10 more than you because...it's the computer.

So turn based is always best for a rpg, that way the CPU mobs get one damn attack before I make my one, not 12.

For me it depends on the JRPG, most Final fantasies are good, but there are plenty out there.......

FF10 was good... if you ignore Tidus and the dreaded laughing scene (Who thinks of putting that stuff in games anyway?)

Although I dont really hate them, I just get slightly disturbed that many people make a big deal about it and that my lame sensor goes of the secound I sit down to play them. Scary fanboys who can't see the downsides of the games and haters who often hate the games with no reason are something that ive learned to live with. I usually find the ones who dislike the games more fun to listen to compared to the Fanboys (and girls). And if I have to pick anything to dislike in a JRPG its usually the character design, but on the other hand... they are Japaneese, that speaks for itself

The only thing I don't like about JRPGs is Final Fantasy. People play a few of those games, and then tend not to ever try other, better JRPGs if they don't like those. Final Fantasy needs to go, to give the genre room to grow.

The Grandia series is an excellent starting point for JRPG newbies, with its blend of humor and faster paced turn based combat.

I like JRPGs, it's just that a lot of them have HORRIBLE dialogues.

Valkyria Chronicles, for example, is an awesome game, it's just that half of those cutscenes could be used to torture people just because some character suddenly starts to talk in an know-it-all-tone about what strategy they're using while the other attempts to propel his eyes out if their sockets.

It touches on many old fav games flat out being unfair. As in Civ games, yes the computer IS given crap for free, has cities that do not produces ect. Even in turn based RPG's spells like blind and silence work AGINST us all the time, against the bad guy 50% chance is more a .50% chance.

And PS 3 was a great game with the breeding of the generations of heros. I just disliked the spell system. (Phantasy Star 3 of course)
