So I was looking through the mods at FNV Nexus and saw that nearly all the weapon mods were weapons that would look very out of place in Fallout no just because they looked like new but because they were from the 90-2010 period. I thought to myself how much cooler it would be if Fallout was set during the modern day interpritation of the future and not the 50s. What do you think?
Edit: Where the Hell did my poll go?

...Everyone would be dead.

We kinda understand radiation now. >.> It's not magic.

So yes I like my 50s fallout :(

I love ma' 50s Fallout. It's the universe I fell in love with. If you want a newer post-apocalyptic wasteland, play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

(Which is, by the way, brilliant.)

I love the 50's Fallout. For me, it's what sets Fallout apart from other post-apocalyptic games and movies.

I think that the 1950's vision of the future is part of the charm of the Fallout series and that would be lessened if not lost outright if it were "modernised", so to speak.

I disagree, the fifties theme is what I like about Fallout, its one of the reasons that New Vegas feels odd to me, cause some of the weapons just feel outa place.

If it's not retro-futuristic, it's not Fallout anymore. And I think much of its charm is derived from the old hopeful future we thought was coming...

The future we envision now looks too freaking bleak. So, I don't really think Fallout would be better with a modern vision of the future.

The following video demonstrates what happens if you take the '50s out of Fallout. Abandon hope, all ye who watch:

I have to second that 50s Fallout is what gives the game its charm. Take that away and you have just another post-apocalyptic RPG shooter.

I really, really don't like when modders miss the point of the game they're trying to mod. Mods should always exist to enhance the gameplay experience, not break immersion and otherwise obey Sturgeon's Law.

Keep in mind, I'm a PC gamer---mods are life itself. But let's face it, 90% of them are only brilliant to their authors.

I like '50s Fallout. It's charming, the generation that feared being nuked was nuked.

Oh, and I like the art style of it. The fridges, the food, the cars, the subway stations.

The 50s is part of Fallout's charm. All that cheery innocence and the classic music just combine so perfectly with blasting a Super Mutant's face off.

Bad idea, it would be just another post apocalyptic game, without Fallouts charm. Thats the main reason i love this game, the setting.

This is kind of like saying, "Man, Hamburgers are great and all, but think about how great they would be if the bread was more crusty and on just the bottom, followed by some Marinara sauce instead of ketchup, then a lot of cheese, with peperoni instead of hamburger, sliced over the top" Yes, that would be good. It is called a pizza. It is something completely different, and unrelated to the hamburger. You really can't say that that would be a better hamburger, because it would not be a hamburger.

I like the 50's setting. It is distinctive. It gives it its charm.

I like it. It's a welcome change from the norm.

However, there's just some things I want to change. I don't like 50's music. If you take the same 5 or 6 songs and loop them incessantly, I begin to HATE that music. So I have modern rock and a playlist extender. 100 songs from the likes of Zeppelin, Disturbed, 'Tallica, AIC, and they don't loop the same five or six anymore! \m/

Oh, and I dare you to tell me that it wouldn't be epic to kick a door down and blast every ************ in the room while something from Metallica or Pantera blares from your pipboy.

I also mod my boomsticks. The vanilla stuff is nice, but I want an AK47. I want an M1 Garand. I want an M82. I want a Smith and Wesson 500. That's my desired loadout for any wasteland adventures, Fallout or no. What adding those weapons does to the 50's era theme doesn't matter to me. [footnote]Of the weapons I listed, only the M82 is a flat impossibility. The others are either plausible, after all how long do you think it would have taken them to take a revolver and put a .50 caliber magnum round in it, or they existed at the time before the Fallout universe diverged. It's not like that Kalashnakov isn't canon. It was invented in 1946-47![/footnote] Being able to mod the game to my tastes is one of the reasons I like the Fallout games so much. I'm free to have my Metallica pipboy skin, my AK47, my jetpack, my laptop and whatever other shenanigans I want, while the purists are welcome to stick to at most high-res texture mods and rebalance patches. It's a win-win as long as the purists don't go QQing at me because I might have 'broken the atmosphere'...
Agreed. The music is annoying, I never use the radio as a result, and some more dated but badass weaponry would be nice.

I think there was an AK in FO3, called the Chinese Assault Rifle, but I have yet to see one in Vegas.

Personally, and this isnt me playing devils advocate, I sincerely hate the 50s motif of fallout. It specifically stands out at me and keeps me from liking the franchise more. I would guess it would have something to do with the fact Im not fond of 50s references anyway, they grate on my nerves with the false sense of wholesome values, the emphasis on horn instrumentation in the music, and the whole B-scifi movie schlock.
Incoming WoT rant
The music is the worst for me and its why as soon as I get the game loaded up one of the first things I do is cut the music. For my sensibilities its completely illogical. Even if you use the fallout lore to explain it, its completely illogical. The 50s music is a throwback and an implied scientific golden age where the 50s style was extended for roughly 100 years? Really? Is it even possible our art during any sort of golden age wouldnt change over time naturally?

Then the bombs hit around 2070s with the actual nuke war. Everyone dives into vaults and hides for another 100 years or so before people start coming out, all the while society in its mutated form has continued to evolve and grow.

Theres still access to things such as computers, electricity, refrigeration and other modern technologies, that are repaired and reworked, but yet nowhere along the lines did anyone in that 100-200 year time span did anyone decide to pick up one of the hundreds of thousands of guitars that would be left behind or craft new instruments? And apparently even though some people make a living building performing the complex task of building neon signs, no one else could master the art of a paintbrush? Art has long been something very deeply ingrained in the human existence, but for some reason no one in over a century tried to produce any new art or music?

And dont get me started on how illogical it is that no one bothered to destroy old buildings and from the salvagable material build a new strong house from scratch, Or how they leave 1950s silver bullet campers out in the desert, but never thought to build something that looked more advanced than a scrap metal shack.

So yes, I would gladly welcome a fallout game without all the 1950s cornball nonsense, because to me its completely illogical.

What like every other game set in the future? Fallout uses a unique take on the future and I think it's bloody awesome, I'm sure most other people agree too.

Well most people including myself think the music is awesome, so that's all a matter of opinion.

And I think the lore is roughly based around the Cold War not ending and atomic science being focused on a lot more. So you have all these alternate takes on modern technology using nuclear power, and culture is supposedly locked because of escalating fear from the Cold War.

Might not make 100% sense, but hey it's just a game.
