The music is the worst for me and its why as soon as I get the game loaded up one of the first things I do is cut the music. For my sensibilities its completely illogical. Even if you use the fallout lore to explain it, its completely illogical. The 50s music is a throwback and an implied scientific golden age where the 50s style was extended for roughly 100 years? Really? Is it even possible our art during any sort of golden age wouldnt change over time naturally?
Perhaps you're not familiar with cultures outside of America. The same standards have been sung in countries like Mexico and China for 50 years and remain mainstream. True, sometimes a band comes along that makes new songs in the old style or new genres appear, but the mainstream remains very traditional. If they wanted a challenge they could seek out bands making new songs in those styles and add them, but so far they haven't. It isn't unfathomable though that in a repressive atmosphere such as a permanently McCarthy style America that change would be dissuaded.
Exactly. Fallout is only good for it's incredible 50's charm (that and the whole "being an amazing RPG" thing). Really the whole world is awesome which makes you happy there is so much detail.
It wouldn't be as fun. Part of the appeal is that the 50s future-utopia world that fears communisist insurrection is that it's entirely silly in its approach, which is one of the charms that allowed Fallout to get off the ground. Fallout actually went somewhere BECAUSE it was taking the piss and KNEW it was taking the piss, so it rolled with it and turned out good.
I really, really don't like when modders miss the point of the game they're trying to mod. Mods should always exist to enhance the gameplay experience, not break immersion and otherwise obey Sturgeon's Law.
Keep in mind, I'm a PC gamer---mods are life itself. But let's face it, 90% of them are only brilliant to their authors.
And that is actually enough. A mod only needs to be great to the guy who makes it. If other people like it's an added bonus.
Hell, 90% of the user maps in FreeSpace 2 a probably riffing on The Battle of Endor. And that's fine. If people want to do that, then by all means, let them. Some will go on to make awesome stuff. Some will do a bad space battle with badly assigned AI scripts and capital ships doing nothing.
I know you are a Rome Total War fan, so I assume you have tried out some of the mods for it? Not every mod is Europa Barbarorum or Total Realism. Most are in fact just minor stuff or silly skins or what not. And that's alright I think.
Actually I kinda prefer the Fallout Tactics approach to the Fallout universe.Yeah it was totally non canon, yeah it probably messed the sales of the game...But it was gritty and badass whereas the Fallout 3 aproach was just gloomy and emo (not talking about NV or the original fallout aka obsidian/black isle titles since they had a lot more on the subject of the wild west if bombs fell rather than the retro futuristic city...
BTW give Fallout Tactics a whirl. It's a very good title and if I'm not mistaken it comes in the package with Fallout 1 and 2 + some goodies. And the universe is not that bad...With it's hummers and 90s + 2000s prototype weaponry.
Personally, and this isnt me playing devils advocate, I sincerely hate the 50s motif of fallout. It specifically stands out at me and keeps me from liking the franchise more. I would guess it would have something to do with the fact Im not fond of 50s references anyway, they grate on my nerves with the false sense of wholesome values, the emphasis on horn instrumentation in the music, and the whole B-scifi movie schlock.
Incoming WoT rant

Then the bombs hit around 2070s with the actual nuke war. Everyone dives into vaults and hides for another 100 years or so before people start coming out, all the while society in its mutated form has continued to evolve and grow.
Theres still access to things such as computers, electricity, refrigeration and other modern technologies, that are repaired and reworked, but yet nowhere along the lines did anyone in that 100-200 year time span did anyone decide to pick up one of the hundreds of thousands of guitars that would be left behind or craft new instruments? And apparently even though some people make a living building performing the complex task of building neon signs, no one else could master the art of a paintbrush? Art has long been something very deeply ingrained in the human existence, but for some reason no one in over a century tried to produce any new art or music?
And dont get me started on how illogical it is that no one bothered to destroy old buildings and from the salvagable material build a new strong house from scratch, Or how they leave 1950s silver bullet campers out in the desert, but never thought to build something that looked more advanced than a scrap metal shack.
So yes, I would gladly welcome a fallout game without all the 1950s cornball nonsense, because to me its completely illogical.
Fallout is suppose to be illogical that's the charm. 2 Vault dwellers, a tribal and a mailman. With allies like mutants, robots, ghouls and people basically changed the face of America. The reason why most people haven't done anything because they really can't. They have to worry about eating, also not getting raped and killed. Its stupid to do unneed labor when you can't barely scratch on by.
It's a reason why I like the Enclave because they were trying hard to get America back to where it once was. Even when it was all the technology that brought it to its ruin. Which is why I also understand why the Brotherhood of Steel wants to control the old world tech so it doesn't get out of hand again.
Plus a lot of old world tech is just lost to the modern man. Also who knows how many Vaults are still active across America. It was Illogical to make each and every vault a social and or scientific experiment. To break it down Fallout within itself is a clusterfuck.
I agree without the 50's charm it just isn't fallout. I mean how do you get away with giant ant, cockroaches, molerats and ghouls. Really heck even without that look at the Fallout universe they're going through the sixties now actually progressing culturally after 250-300 years late by our standards.
I can't wait to see an English Fallout.
I can imagine the 'It's the British thing to do'-ness already.
British Patriotism FTW.
"For Queen and Country!" I yell as a I pull out a Sci-fi Alien Gun and zap a huge yellow man's head off.
It would be awesome.
