Yes. I like quiet a few types of RPGs to, the traditional kind(Dragon warriors, old Final Fantasy), modern WRPGs(Mass effect, Fallout 3), and JRPGs too. I've found what I most like in gmaes is an open world though So I really like RPGs that let you kind of putt around and do what you like rather then shoving you down a linear path that you can't deviate from.

Nice poll, dude.

Yes, I love RPGs. I mostly like WRPGs, but I'll play a JRPG if I hear loads of good things about it. I'm willing to trade an excellent story and voice acting for gameplay, but luckily my favorite developers, Bioware offer both in their RPGs. My second favorite RPG developer is not, as some of you might believe, Bethesda (the only Bethesda game I liked was Fallout 3). It's Obsidian, I just love their style of writing, and KotOR 2 is my favorite game ever.

Which is why I'm looking forward to New Vegas, I liked the Fallout 3 Bethesda made, and it seems that it keeps its gameplay, but it won't have the god-awful Bethesda writing and character animations, it'll have Obsidian's dark writing.

Thanks, Fallout 3 was pretty good, I liked the plot and action, what made a bad impression on you about Fallout 3?

As I said, the character animations and writing. I have to say though that they were considerably better in Fallout 3 than in any Bethesda game that they had made until that point. I'm probably too harsh on it, though, since the story really was pretty good, and it kept me playing.

Love 'em. Japanese, Western, whatever, long as it's good. I don't need to have made my own character, or anything like that, I don't need to forge his path, it's still an RPG to me.

I do like doing that though.

I don't like the hardcore RPGs out there (the ones with a billion class variations and crate after crate of junk items), and ones that sacrifice a good story for "scope". But I'd reckon half of my top 10 games would be RPGs.

I did when they were rpgs, when events from lower levels could haunt you at higher. When it was about you making morale choices and less about you "leveling up your sword and shield"

But that also comes down to whats a rpg anymore, since some peoples narrow defintions classify pacman as a rpg...

I miss the real/good ones yeah...
If I may ask, which ones do you consider the real/good ones?
Ok, sure. I'll bite. Last time I did just got load of flames but I'll stand by it again.
Ultimas 3-8
Fall out 1 and 2.
Daggerfall
Many of the older SSI DND games. Dark Queen of Kyrnn, Forgotten Realms ect.
Balurdurs gate 1
Phantasy Star 3 (yes it falls into a connect a dot game but since you could pick who you married over generations, if allowed you to make your children stronger warriors or mages)
Kotor 1
FF7 for if anything the storyline.

Yes they required imagination, your dealing with vga graphics and much of your text was in a manual at your side.

But many of the newer games seem to lack consequences, freedom to grind as you wish, and if you wanted to go to that dragons cave at level 2 your shouldn't... nothing stopped you. I dislike the Neverwinter set loot you will be this level at this time of the adventure type of game.

Guess also there was a charm about being your own made persona and not someone elses hero. Fable was close to being damn near perfect for the new age short of the physical changes as levels went on... why is casting spells making me bald and using a sword growing a beard? Strange I know, but as a player I like to make a hero and stick to it.

And above all else the story telling.
There are a few more rare jrpg titles I could throw in. But I'll stick to the top of my list.

because I've heard much controversy as to wether RPG's are good or bad, so what's your opinion?
You'll be hard pushed to find someone who doesn't like RPGs here, the Western varient, anyway. JRPGs on the other hand, well, you'd probably need a flame shield for even mentioning them.

I enjoy both WRPG and JRPG. They both offer different things, for example JRPGs have an indepth focused story, which due to it being the only path, it is much better developed. WRPGs give you the ability of choice, allowing to shape your experience more.

It's one of my most favourite genres. I don't like jrpg's though. I tend to grab back to the older RPG's, not only for nostalgia, but also to remember how they should/could be made.

Though i lean toward JRPGs more than WRPGs.
Any really good JRPGs you can suggest? Preferably something that would appeal to a person who enjoys WRPGs? Would like to give them a shot, am not a fan of japanese art style, crazy hairdoos and all that jazz, but if it's a good game, I'd like to try one :p

Examples of the ones I liked: Morrowind, Oblivion, DA:O (prefer the first/third person RPGs tho), ME2, Alpha Protocol etc.

edit: oh and preferably a recent release, I hate dealing with outdated graphics (doesn't need to be awesome, just not too outdated) and old gameplay/controls

I LOVE RPG's. As a genre rpgs present the biggest creative challenge to a designer as you have to realise a whole world and system of life (I'm not saying other genres don't but with rpgs its kind of a given). I've sunk more hours into rpgs, both J and W, than any other form of game.

Western RPGs, definitely western.

I can't design my character, or change their appearance, or select their skills or what type of weapon they use, and I don't get to do anything when they level up?

Do I at least get dialogue options? Sometimes?

Fail.

I still say that JRPGs are more akin to adventure games than anything. If it wasn't for the fact that you gain experience and level up, there would be no basis at all for calling them RPGs. It just always feels like you have no control over the game or the characters outside of combat, and that, to me, screams Action/Adventure.

I tend to prefer western RPGs to Japanese RPGs. If began my trek into RPG territory with D&D and while i tend to enjoy the Final Fantasy Series (except for 11 and 13), I prefer to play a character whose viewpoint I can share.

While i enjoy exploring a RPG's universe, I play games to unwind and relax before returning to my studies. When a single quest takes over an hour to complete, it's more than likely that i'll have to save and quit and break the consistent flow between one scene and another.

So to sum up. I enjoy RPGs with a relatible protagonist and a well built "Quest system" where each quest is relevant without being a grind

Not really, I don't like the Gameplay in most of them. To be honest I only enjoy RPGs that play the same as ordinary First/Third person games in terms of mechanics, but with all those nice RPG extras like a branching storyline, choices and leveling system. For example, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Vampire: Bloodlines.

RPGs like Dragon Age for example I can't play; it relies too much on strategy and careful planning for me and I can't really get into it. Ordering my character around rather than being there in the thick of the action makes me feel rather disconnected from games, and that's really what most RPGs are like. I also find a top-down view a huge immersion breaker and at least some level of immersion is important for me in a game.
