I definitely enjoy a good RPG. The problem is that good RPG's seem to be a rare find these days.

I used to like jRPGs, before they all became generic weeaboo abominations of terrible fiction designed to gratify useless meatsacks that spend others' money.

So up until around '98. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Super Mario RPG still rank in the top 20 greatest games ever made, out of the thousands I've played.

The only wRPGs I've ever liked are Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. Bethesda games are among the worst I've ever witnessed, as well as Dragon Age.

They're my favorite genre of game. Morrowind is my favorite RPG but I like 'em all. Not a big fan of chrono trigger though...

If I had to choose one reason why I prefer Videogames over any other entertainment medium it would be the existence of RPG's (and sandbox games) However I am very picky about what RPG's I enjoy (more so than any other Genre of game). I am generally uninterested in Turn Based RPG's (Final Fantasy XIII barely has enough action for me) and vastly prefer Action-RPG's. I would say there are two types of western RPG's, the Bioware style of a more story based game where in the character development has the greatest focus and the Bethesda style where story takes a back seat to exploration. Although I love sandbox games Bethesdas style of RPG can get overwhelming for me and the lack of character development causes me to lose interest in the game. A Bioware RPG on the other hand will keep me interested until I have completed everything in the game and I will keep coming back for the DLC.
What's a sandbox game? Why don't you like turn based games? Which Bethesda Games? I personally liked Oblivion and Fallout 3, from Bioware i liked Dragon Age Origins.
You're right I should have been more specific about which games I liked and disliked.
I will now answer your questions (captain obvious has now arrived).
Sandbox games are open world action games like Grand Theft Auto or Assassins Creed and are called sandbox games because the developers are giving you a sandbox (the game world) to play in.

I dislike Turn based RPG's for a few reasons:

1: the whole idea of taking turns to kill someone seems unrealistic and breaks the immersion level a good RPG should provide.
2: Just not enough action for me. I always enjoyed action games (first/third person shooters and RTS's) until about a year ago when I began to understand and enjoy a more varied selection of game genres and just don't find Turn based games as enjoyable due to the lack of action.

I don't dislike either them but I am not a big fan of Oblivion or Fallout 3. They didn't suck me in the way my 2 favorite games of all time, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age did (not a huge fan of mass effect 1). As for any Bioware/Bethesda games from previous console generations I can't really comment on them as I only briefly played KOTOR and Morrowind when I was younger. I was 8 when I got my original XBOX and was (in my mind) too young to enjoy the complexities of RPG's and have never had the desire to experience either of those games.

Edit: Solemn Soup, I am really glad you are promoting discussion on your own thread many people who create threads just leave them to die.
I myself like Assassins Creed 1 and 2 im halfway through the second one but don't have a way to play it. I've never played KOTOR or Mass Effect 1 and 2 but they seem like games i would thouroughly enjoy.

Thanks, I think it pointless to create a thread and not interact within it [sub][sub][sub]even though this is my first one[/sub][/sub][/sub] and I like to know what other gamers think about things.
I highly Recommend Both Mass Effect 1 and 2. Although the second is in my opinion the better one by far, however you should play the first one as well because it allows you to transfer your save data (and the decisions you made) to the second one. These decisions have consequences and help you feel like your decisions actually matter which is yet another reason I love Bioware.

On a different note why can't you play Assassins Creed? Captain obvious is back and he says that your system is broken or otherwise unavailable.

Also congratulations on such as successful first thread, may your others be as successful.
I'll look into them, I want to play the Final Fantasy series first.

I need to update my system.

Thanks i hope they are.

What's wrong with Bethesda games? And Dragon Age?

There's a couple of good ones that I really like...

But JRPG's typically get on my nerves due to the massively overused cliches...

Which ones do you like?
Mass Effect series, Fallout series, Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced, Advanced Wars, Knights of the Old Republic, Pokemon (that's how I roll)...

Mainly combat oriented ones...

Hell ya!!!

I guess Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2 would be closer to that category, and I'm also a fan of a lot of FPSs and 3rd person shooters (Halo mostly, Gears of War, Crackdown)...

That is a silly question, akin to asking "Do you like pizza?" There are so many factors to consider! I like good pizza, and I like to play good RPGS, like Fallout 3, and all the Mario RPGS (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, Super Mario RPG, and any others I can't remember). I'm also a fan of Pokemon, Monster Hunter, and Mass Effect 1 & 2 (but not Dragon Age; I hated the combat and the setting).

Then you have pizzas with pineapple and spinach on them. I suppose some folks like them, but me? Blech. I rented White Knight Chronicles a while back, and that pretty much my only experience with a lousy, formulaic JRPG, and that's a shame. From what I've seen, those JRPGs have wonderful art direction (except the characters; anime hair does not transition well to 3D, I think) with creative monsters and environments, and then they have to screw it up with their unlikeable characters and painfully linear progression. But inversely, the West has some great games like Fallout 3 with its great gameplay, great characters, great story, and terrible art direction. That game was browner than an outhouse in the dust bowl. If only they could make an awesome BioWare or Bethesda style Western RPG and combine it with the superlative art design of the East...

So, for my TL;DR answer: Formulaic, linear JRPGs? Bad. Other stuff? Good, for most that I've seen.

What's your favorite RPG, and whats your least favorite, I can see that you probably would't be an anime fan or a Final Fantasy fan, but maybe Oblivion? KOTOR?
I myself I like anime and JRPG's like Final Fantasy.

I guess my favorite RPG would be either The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind or Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door. I don't know if I could pick between those two, but as for my least favorite I mentioned White Knight Chronicles. I suppose it wouldn't have been as bad if it didn't tempt me with character customization and then give the spotlight to the "real" lead character. Combine this with the rote narrative (evil overlord invades the good kingdom; a peasant boy becomes a hero and falls for the princess, and so on), the characters being a bunch of unlikeable slackers, and the complete lack of any player agency got it returned to Blockbuster the very next day. That's not to say that I don't like anime, but that's a question quite like your first. There's good anime, there's great anime, and there's terrible anime. I suppose that there must be some JRPGs that I could like (after all, the Mario RPGs and Monster Hunter are from Japan), but I'd need some solid convincing first.

Oh, and I liked Oblivion (not as much as Morrowind, though), and I've never played KOTOR. It's a BioWare RPG, so it's basically like Mass Effect or Dragon Age set in the Star Wars universe, right? I ought to pick up a copy one of these days...

I love both online and single player RPG's. Oblivion and Fallout 3 are excellent single player RPG's. Last Chaos is really fun but can be a little grindy at times.

More of a tabletop RPGer myself, which is honestly much more of an RPG than any videogame claims to be.
