I voted "True Metal"

When I was in high school I was a big fan of Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc. All the "classic" bands that everyone knows their name and at least a couple songs by.

I still listen to them from time to time, but definitely not like I used to. These days I mostly listen to more classic rock like Boston, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Blue Oyster Cult, etc.

I'm not really sure why exactly I've been gradually moving away from metal. Admittedly, I've had little to no interest in any of the modern bands that I've gotten exposure to, and I'm kind of running out of "classic" bands to experience for the first time. So maybe that has something to do with it.

Easiest way I can describe my metal taste is "most except thrash unintelligible growls". Typical, try Amorphis.

Well, I used to listen to Hardcore and Screemo. There's a couple bands I'll listen to every once and a while.
That probably doesn't count though.

Don't listen to it. Probably never will. I haven't heard a lot of it but from what I've heard, to me metal is the antithesis of being melodic.
Not all metal is an atonal mess! Most of it actually has singing, also known as clean vocals. The thing that makes metal metal, traditionally is fast guitar and drums. Try these out, you might like them!
New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM): The Trooper by Iron Maiden
Traditional: Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath
Folk: The Wanderer by Ensiferum
Thrash: One by Metallica
Symphonic: Never Enough by Epica
Alternative: Gone Sovereign by Stone Sour
Heavy: Holy Diver by Dio
Speed: Through the Fire and the Flames by Dragonforce

Still, it's definitely not for everyone. That's the great thing about music, you're allowed to like whatever you want! All we ask is that exercise a little critical thinking so you don't end up listening to 20 rap songs by Nicki Minaj about getting wasted and fucked *shivers*

Yes, though I tend more toward power metal or melodic metal than anything else. Bands like Tyr, Turisas, HammerFall, Sabaton and Manowar make up the majority of my playlist.

Some of those are definitely better than what I've heard from the metal genre, so thanks! But I think my problem is I just appreciate vocals a lot more than I do instruments. The guitars in the first Iron Maiden track are quite cool, but those vocals require almost no skill.

I'd very much prefer someone like Stevie Wonder or Aretha Franklin who, while not necessarily be able to play an instrument as impressively as a metal singer, but they have voices that instrument themselves and span across generations. Their voices ARE the song, and the song would sound just as captivating without any instruments.

Also, let's not bring Nicki Minaj into this. No need to get nasty. lol

I love metal and I think it's the only music worth listening to (ok, classical music is another exception for me, but that's it). My favorite genres are folk, gothic and symphonic metal. Some of my favorite bands: Ensiferum, Eluveitie, Northland, The Sins of Thy Beloved, the older Tristania and Sirenia albums, Haggard, Epica, Nightwish, Wintersun, Versailles. I wish more people would appreciate this type of music. I hate how ignorant people can be at times, so many of them think metal is all about crazy screaming, but it can actually be extremely artistic.

Outside of classical music and video game soundtracks, metal is really all I listen to willingly. Sure, I may listen to some classic rock at times, and there are some bands I enjoy that flirt with hard rock a lot, but metal is still what I listen to the most.

As far as sub-genre goes, power, symphonic (regardless of which type), and melodic death are my favorites. I also enjoy black, technical death, blackened death, traditional, death/doom, gothic doom, and epic doom. I still listen to the others, but nowhere near as much, and the ratio of what I like to what I don't like is much lower. And for those who consider the -core genres, nu metal, rap metal, and any similarly related genre as actual metal, then no, I don't listen to them. It's not that I think they don't have potential to be good (I know there is some truly great metalcore out there), it's just that, on the whole, I find them very unappealing.

Metal is basically my life. Here is a list of some of my recent favorites:

Periphery (prog)
Behemoth (blackened death)
Lamb Of God (groove)
Born Of Osiris (progressive deathcore)
Whitechapel (deathcore)
Fleshgod Apocalypse (symphonic death)
Protest The Hero (prog)
Enter Shikari (metalcore mixed with electronic)

Overall, I can't go about my daily life without metal, unless I'm into one of my many indie rock periods, to which I will abuse artists like Ben Howard, Imagine Dragons, Dancing Lotus, and so on.

I also have two metal tattoos, one of Periphery and one of In Flames, one of my old favorite bands!

No, I don't. I don't like it, I hate all the screaming and I think most of those dudes are posing and engaging in the aural equivalent of a pissing contest.

The quote is just there to get your attention. Metal is about doing whatever you want and not following the stringent rules of mainstream music. You can have howled/screeched vocals, irregular time signatures, abrasive melodies and make it about anything. For example, Stone Sour's A House of Gold and Bones is autobiographical for Corey Taylor, the band's lead singer and a couple of songs (I think "The Traveler") is about his years of homelessness. It's not all about burning of churches and raping women.

Black Metal Example [WARNING: slight nudity; blurred]

I think that most people that hate on metal's image is because they immediately think of black metal. White and black (aka corpse) paint, they preach destruction of the church, and often religion as a whole, have a very noisy sound to the uninitiated and are responsible for hundreds of church burnings and many support Nazism under the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) banner. The vast, vast majority of people that listen to black metal are against this kind of behaviour (e.g. the reaction to Varg Vikernes being released and his actions immediately after).

Let me make this perfectly clear, metal is not about starting wars/fires and destroying any semblance of civilised society. Metal is about letting out all your anger and frustration in an artistic and passionate way. Listening to metal does not make you childish, nor does it make you an imbecile. You may think it's dumb and painful to jump around in a mosh pit, but it's a refreshing and enthralling way to let out your pent up anger in a safe and friendly way; if you get knocked down or hurt, people will help you. It's usually no more dangerous than a game of paintball: you'll get a few bruises, maybe a cut or two, but you'll be absolutely fine the next day and meet some new people.

The vast majority of metal is not like the stuff above, most of it is more like Megadeth in that the vocals are clean (i.e. singing) and the guitar is fast and technical.
More Common Metal Example
The video to the left, "Holy Wars, The Punishment Due", is about the crusades. Others, like "Aces High" by Iron Maiden, is about the London raids in World War II.

Metal heads are anything but dumb. My favourite singer, Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden), is a pilot and lots of other things. Tosin Abasi, the lead guitarist for Animals as Leaders, is one of the most accomplished and talented guitarists alive. And those are just to name a few. Granted, there are many incredibly stupid artists out there are well, just like any other genre.

I've heard the "metal is for angsty kids" argument before and I can most certainly assure you that it is not. I finished high school in June of 2012 and I was one of the very few people that listened to metal. I knew everyone in my graduating year fairly well, it was only 200 people. As for the socially inept factor, that is also untrue. Mostly. Yes, there is the odd person that proclaims their love for metal for everyone to see to shock people into staying away from them or they use it to block out all everything in their lives. Those people are however the exception rather than the rule. All the metalheads I know now are socially accepted and some are quite popular among our peers.

Finally, while I know you didn't bring this up, very little metal is Satanic. There's a specific genre for that and it's called doom metal. It's characterised by slower tempos, a feeling of oppression, slightly cleaner or sung vocals and Satanic messages. The most recent example of this would be Ghost, a Swedish band that combines doom metal, pop vocals and make it as if it were a throwback to the early days of Black Sabbath.

To finish, metal is a hugely varied and accepting music scene. We accept the outcasts and the popular ones and treat you the same no matter where you're from, whether you be African, Hispanic, Indian, Caucasian, etc. We love something others hate and appreciate the new and inventive.

tl;dr Metal is fantastic, varied and accepting of anyone. The people are like any other demographic, we just like to display our frustration is music instead of fists.
Sorry, I know this is kinda necro, but I just wanna say, uhhh, Behemoth is not Black metal. Don't get me wrong, I fucking love Behemoth, super pumped for their next album next year, but they're blackened death, not black. Early stuff is black, but not what you linked to. There's TONS of "classic" black metal from the 90s and stuff out there, surely you can pick something from that as an actual example? Hell, you mentioned Varg, just link us up some Burzum.
