Just out of curiosity, how many escapists listen to metal? I've noticed in my own life that a lot of nerds are metalheads as well, be it Iron Maiden, Carcass, Trivium or anything else.

So how many of us are metalheads? And do you label yourself as one of the somewhat elitist subgroups? I know most metalheads aren't like that but there is a very vocal minority. [sub]Seems like there's one of those in every out-of-the-norm subculture[/sub]

EDIT: The options are lumped together versions of multiple genres.
True Metal is heavy, NWOBHM, traditional and 80's thrash.
Extreme metal is (melo/brutal)death, grindcore and doom.
Radio metal is metalcore, alternative and modern throwback.
Black metal is black metal. Moving on.
Variety is you listen to more than those outlines.

EDIT: I'm going to use CatBus to teach something. It might be is very long so I'll put it in a spoiler tag.

CatBus said:
The quote is just there to get your attention. Metal is about doing whatever you want and not following the stringent rules of mainstream music. You can have howled/screeched vocals, irregular time signatures, abrasive melodies and make it about anything. For example, Stone Sour's A House of Gold and Bones is autobiographical for Corey Taylor, the band's lead singer and a couple of songs (I think "The Traveler") is about his years of homelessness. It's not all about burning of churches and raping women.

Black Metal Example

I think that most people that hate on metal's image is because they immediately think of black metal. White and black (aka corpse) paint, they preach destruction of the church, and often religion as a whole, have a very noisy sound to the uninitiated and are responsible for hundreds of church burnings and many support Nazism under the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) banner. The vast, vast majority of people that listen to black metal are against this kind of behaviour (e.g. the reaction to Varg Vikernes being released and his actions immediately after).

Let me make this perfectly clear, metal is not about starting wars/fires and destroying any semblance of civilised society. Metal is about letting out all your anger and frustration in an artistic and passionate way. Listening to metal does not make you childish, nor does it make you an imbecile. You may think it's dumb and painful to jump around in a mosh pit, but it's a refreshing and enthralling way to let out your pent up anger in a safe and friendly way; if you get knocked down or hurt, people will help you. It's usually no more dangerous than a game of paintball: you'll get a few bruises, maybe a cut or two, but you'll be absolutely fine the next day and meet some new people.

The vast majority of metal is not like the stuff above, most of it is more like Megadeth in that the vocals are clean (i.e. singing) and the guitar is fast and technical.
More Common Metal Example
The video to the left, "Holy Wars, The Punishment Due", is about the crusades. Others, like "Aces High" by Iron Maiden, is about the London raids in World War II.

Metal heads are anything but dumb. My favourite singer, Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden), is a pilot and lots of other things. Tosin Abasi, the lead guitarist for Animals as Leaders, is one of the most accomplished and talented guitarists alive. And those are just to name a few. Granted, there are many incredibly stupid artists out there are well, just like any other genre.

I've heard the "metal is for angsty kids" argument before and I can most certainly assure you that it is not. I finished high school in June of 2012 and I was one of the very few people that listened to metal. I knew everyone in my graduating year fairly well, it was only 200 people. As for the socially inept factor, that is also untrue. Mostly. Yes, there is the odd person that proclaims their love for metal for everyone to see to shock people into staying away from them or they use it to block out all everything in their lives. Those people are however the exception rather than the rule. All the metalheads I know now are socially accepted and some are quite popular among our peers.

Finally, while I know you didn't bring this up, very little metal is Satanic. There's a specific genre for that and it's called doom metal. It's characterised by slower tempos, a feeling of oppression, slightly cleaner or sung vocals and Satanic messages. The most recent example of this would be Ghost, a Swedish band that combines doom metal, pop vocals and make it as if it were a throwback to the early days of Black Sabbath.

To finish, metal is a hugely varied and accepting music scene. We accept the outcasts and the popular ones and treat you the same no matter where you're from, whether you be African, Hispanic, Indian, Caucasian, etc. We love something others hate and appreciate the new and inventive.

tl;dr Metal is fantastic, varied and accepting of anyone. The people are like any other demographic, we just like to display our frustration is music instead of fists.

99.9 percent of my Itunes is metal so you might say I'm a metalhead.

Though I do prefer other sub-genres over others,I would not say I label myself as one. All metal is special in my eyes. My favorites genres are metalcore, post hardcore, and power metal, though I'm okay with any metal genre unless it is thrash or grindcore.

I listen to about 45% Thrash, 35% Melodic Death Metal, 10% Heavy, and 10% Other, so... variety?
Though to be honest, a lot of band can be a downright ***** to put in one group or another, but this is what I find myself listening to.
As per elitist, well:
I actually named my cat Manowar after that song.
Here's a picture of her asleep on my bed:
So, yes, I'm more metal than you.

The reason I don't identify myself as a "metalhead" or anything is because most of the 'purists' will scoff you away if you so much as mention metalcore or post-hardcore because "They're more punk than metal" and they're my two favorite sub-genres as well.

Progressive metal and instrumental metal are the two closest follow-ups for "real" metal, with everything else coming up behind and then most doom/death/black metal falling into the territory of "Eh, I don't really like the vocals/lack of melody/production values/combination of any of the preceding."

Yep I would consider myself a metalhead since the vast majority of the music I listen to is metal. I usually stick to metalcore, post-hardcore, hardcore and deathcore but I like most genres of metal. I usually stick to the heavier stuff though but do occasionally go to lighter bands such as hands like houses.

I love that they don't have any songs that I can say I don't really enjoy listening to, which is somewhat of a novelty, especially for bands with more than one album.

Of course that might just be me, but this is the first time I've seen anyone else bring them up so I felt like chiming in. :D

This is actually the first I've heard someone else that listens to them as well. The love started with their first song "Antarctica" was released on the rise records youtube channel. Ever since then I've bought a few shirts and both their albums. Sad that they aren't more popular but they are kind of a niche band :p

I like metal, but the closest I get to a favorite genre is "Extreme progressive metal" a la Opeth/mastodon or "tech death" a la death & Gojira.

I was just sifting through Youtube videos one day and stumbled across "Spineless Crow" and was like "I need to listen to more of this band".

I was excited when I learned they were releasing a second album, and I quite like it as well. As for their niche status, yeah, it's a bit disappointing. They're heavy enough that people who don't like post-hardcore probably won't like them, but they're light enough that people who like their post-hardcore to have harsh vocals might not like them either.

The only metal I listen to is Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson is amazing, and the riffs, oh god the riffs. Although I do have random singles from different artists, like Peace Sells by Megadeth(I think). Two minutes to midnight is my favourite because of Vice City.

Yes, I listen to metal and I love it.

I prefer instrumental metal and power metal, though I do enjoy a wide variety or it. Honestly though, I don't educate myself on music much, so I don't even know half the genres most people talk about when referring to metal (what the fuck is metalcore?!).

I would definitely call myself a metalhead. I also listen to a crapton of different genres, including but not limited to: death metal (The Project Hate MCMXCIX [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obHBV9kIrO4], Gojira [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-OESq1WDGc]), melo-death (Mors Principium Est [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKuzhIQ_wNE], Mercenary [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9Piw31mrAg]), power metal (Blind Guardian [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjAxCx95mO8]), symphonic black metal (...And Oceans [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIVXHTOZx8k]) and industrial metal (Sybreed [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUN7ZdsRAGQ], Black Comedy [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwWPxutd8YQ]).

The only genre I'm not really into is doom metal. Well, and metalcore/deathcore, but I don't consider those metal anyway (yes I'm one of those assholes).

I like Experimental Metal, but not really much of the conventional traditional stuff.

Mostly Metal with Shoegazey elements, such as Jesu, Alcest, Boris, The Angelic Process, Have a Nice Life, Les Distrets. I much prefer the textured heavy feedback guitar sound overall, so fusing that sort of sound with the hard rifts of Metal makes for a really compelling listen to my ears.

I also been getting into Sludge, and Stoner Metal, they are pretty good genres as well, and really tickle my experimental tastes when it comes to Metal.

Big thrash and power metal fan here. But I'm into a little bit of all of the various sub-genres.

I'm not a fan of the term 'metal head' though.
And yes, I can probably seem a bit elitist/stuck up at times.

I listen to a variety of classic thrash, metalcore, post-hardcore, and death metal.

I tried getting more into it at one point of my life, but was turned off at how elitist the metal fanbase can be concerning what's TRUE BROOTAL METAL or not. I ended up just switching to electronic and more chill genres for most of my music library, but I still have every Metallica album and a lot of post-hardcore that I pull out every once in a while.

I do listen to metal, yes. I am very passionate about it, though I don't identify myself as a "metalhead", as I think such terms narrow you down to certain rules and restrictions. But, nevertheless, I am a metal fan, as any seasoned metal fan could probably tell from my username. My favourite genres consist of a wide variety of death metal, as well as epic doom. I fucking LOVE epic doom. It's the genre that can inspire the most emotion out of me at times.

I am into a modest portion of thrash, black and trad metal as well, though I'm not as passionate about those genres, with some exceptions in the realm of black metal (Bathory and Graveland, if you couldn't tell).

i do listen to metal, but i do listen to shit tons of different genre's of music, hell i don't even know what to label half the songs i like, i just like individual songs usually, i don't like a specific "band" or certain albums, so anytime someone describes a song (such as the OP did) with such and such sub-genre, that usually does absolutely nothing for me as I never use those labels nor do most people i chat about music with.

but anyways, yes i do listen to metal, but nowhere near the amount that people do on here (judging by how they phrase their sentencing and how much time they pour into music it seems) so you could label me as a "fukin casul"

I listen to a variety of metal. As of late, I've become more of a fan of melo-death and the Gothenburg style. I also enjoy thrash and several other varieties. Some examples include Mercenary, Dark Tranquility, Manowar, Kittie, Dragon Force, and Some Trivium on the side. I have unusual tastes, I know. There's more in there, but to be honest, I am still fairly new to metal, and I am still figuring out what all is out there.

I generally love anything with dramatic guitar soloes, and a good mix of both clean vocals and growls and shouts.

thatonedude11 up above pretty much nailed my tastes when he linked to this song,

Mercenary is my perfect band. I have yet to hear a song from them that I don't like.
