Poll: Do you lower the difficulty setting if you find a game too hard? (Somewhat Skyrim related)

Does the difficulty add anything or just make bulletsponges? If it addes something I will also keep the difficulty.
I like this point. I will normally play on the default difficulty and then try on a harder one.
This does not mean I won't play on easy difficulties for fun. It's just what I do. I do however hate how most games equate difficulty with the amount of abuse the enemy and the player character can take. I remember a particular run through of Mass Effect on Insane where it was just annoying.

Lower the difficulty? Nope, not at all. I initiate what I like to call the 'Oh-it's-fucking-on-now' glare at the screen. It is pretty similar to my 'Go-and-die' glare, and my personal favorite 'Must...Not...Destroy...controller.' glare, but there is some differences XD

If I get stuck on a particular part of a game, its just a case of find any strat guides after a number of failed attempts (I'd say between 7 to 10).

If someone will tell me how to do a spoiler thing then I'll share my example of the only occasion I've ever lowered the diff in Baldurs gate (because that game on hardest diff is near impossible)
quote me and see it will let you see the hashtags I used

OT: Nope, hardest difficulty always. If I can't beat it, I look online for guides as well, maybe there's a strategy or something I'm missing, which has happened before. Sometimes I even overcomplicate the boss fight or an area/puzzle. But it's a point of pride for me and my friends, one of our group beat dead space on normal and we all rung him out about it until he beat it on hard. If the hardest difficulty is locked, I won't go out of my way to replay it (unless it's a good game), but I'll play it on the hardest available setting.

Unless I'm at my wits end, or it is ruining the whole "experience" of the game for me, then no, I don't change the difficulty. In most cases I'm usually quite stubborn, so I just keep having a go at it.

No, if something is too hard I will try different tactics and if still having no joy I will put the game down for a little bit and come back to it. That usually works well enough for me.
I do think gaming should be fun but I also like to know I am getting better at gaming in general.

If it comes to the point that I'm stuck and don't enjoy the challenge, I lower the difficulty. Either momentarily until I get unstuck or permanently if the game overall is too frustrating to me (but I want to keep playing).

Yesterday I lowered it in skyrim for only 1 part and then put it back up to the previous.
Only because it was such a bang of mages attacking me.

But if I ever do that, I always put it back up after that moment.

I think it depends on the game,in which genre u are experienced and how much you enjoy it.
I remember when I played some titles that i really liked, like Halo, Valkyrie Profile, God of war, Persona I played them again and raise the difficulty. Some games u have to play them several times to reveal their secrets.

I'll lower it in Skyrim if I need to. I am in this for the experience of playing, not the challenge of hammering at the same opponent for a couple of hours just to feel the satisfaction of a job well done long enough to realize he dropped an iron helmet, some weeds, and 2 gold. Then there are a thousand more after him.

If, after roughly 20 attempts and when I've exhausted every strategy conceivable, I lower the difficulty by one, kill the boss(because those mage bosses are ridiculously powerful and are the only things I can't consistently kill on Expert) and then turn the difficulty back up.

Today, after dying several times in Skyrim, I've decided to lower the difficulty setting from Adept to Apprentice.Because frankly, even though I do like the occasional challenge, I play games to have fun. And if I'm getting really frustrated from playing a game, I'm not having fun, this kind thing of kills the experience for me.

So what about you guys? What games have you played that you lowered the difficulty setting mid-game and for what reason? Or do you like to increase the difficulty if a game is too easy?
You realize that some places are not meant to be possible to clear if you're not leveled/equipped enough to do them? It's intentional. If you're stuck at some boss-like Draugr and can't beat him no matter how many potions, powers, shouts, tactics and combinations you try, GTFO and come back when you're stronger. I'm playing the game on Expert WITH LIGHT ARMOR. I have to use a mix of spells, potions, poisons, archery, melee, scrolls, etc etc, to survive. And I like that.

But it's all up to personal preference, and I certainly agree that a game should never be frustrating in a way that makes you pissed. Then it is indeed time to lower the difficulty, at least temporarily. I haven't done that so far myself in Skyrim, and I plan to never do it. We'll see how that goes :p
Well I have decided to bring the difficulty back up after giving it some thought. I also decided to ignore the main quest and go off the beaten path, and wouldn't you know it? I leveled up a few times, soloed a dragon, and gotten myself some dwarven armor.

I guess I gave up a little too quickly.

But I find it funny when people associate a game's difficulty with their manliness somehow. Quite interesting to watch these kids, really.
You said what I was gonna say! I don't know what they are afraid of - like they will find a girl who likes them and is willing to have sex with them and just as they are getting ready the girl will laugh at him and leave when she finds out he plays Halo on easy. I mean, what? Obviously this isn't because girls will laugh at them, they are letting other guys judge their manliness. Seriously, if you are straight guy, why do you care if other guys think you are a pussy? You don't want them anyway!

OT: Of course I lower the difficulty. I play games to have fun. No fun - no play. No one is watching over my shoulder smacking me in the head every time I change the difficulty setting. I don't see the issue.
