Ignoring the difference in spelling, why oh why is there a difference in pronunciation for some words? Why must it be spelt aluminum and said that way, instead of aluminium?
Well, since the element was named from the oxide mineral alumina, the spelling by all rights should be "aluminum," just like ammonia-ammonium, magnesia-magnesium, etc. Unfortunately, some wonk with no etymological knowledge looked at all those "i"s in other elements/compounds and insisted it be spelled with as "aluminium."

Much the same with the pronunciation. I wonder if everyone insisting on the British spelling calls one of the world's most valuable metals "platinium"...

Unrelated but interesting note: "colonel." From what I understand, spelled the Italian way, pronounced the French way.

I remember me and my friend saying when I was younger that American English was the lazy man's English. Now that I'm older I think maybe that was a bit of a dick-ish thing to say, but at the same time...
You're older and wiser, I must say.

British, but it's probably the way I was brought up.
Americans seem a little lazy with their spelling.

The Americans stole our language then stole the U from half the bloody words!!
It's the U's I miss the most too :(
It's time we honoUred the extra flavoUr and coloUr they added to our language.

I've never been able to completely shake the proper Cambridge spelling. Drives me nuts that words like Colour, honour, sabre , etc get flagged as incorrect >.<
You know who invented English? Fucking England. You should probably spell it the way they do rather then arbitrarily removing u's because at one point in the past you hated the queen.

Zippee, you threw some tea in the harbour and run your horse races backwards. good for you.

it's COLOUR! dammit.

Only reason I try to shake it off is because there are still quite a few businesses that wont accept Cambridge.

I should make it noted that I'm from the Isle Skye originally, so I use the British spelling

Doesn't matter, half the people on this site can't even spell or use grammer correctly anyway.

But, by the way, it is British spelling since Americans started using English, but after they gained independance decided they should change most words to be different. Therefore, British spelling is the purest form of English. Fact!

I laugh at how all these Brits make fun of our English, saying that we spell them wrong, and yet we don't do anything to them.

Pricks.
Im sorry... did you just insult a whole nation? because that sounded an awful lot like racism there...
I'm seriously hoping you were aiming for irony, there.
Maybe not as far as racism then, but who knows, that term is tossed about a bit too freely these days, you could say British where a race though

However, he just insulted 58 million +
Hooo, boy.....If that's not a perfect case of the pot calling the kettle black, then I'm Robert Redford.

Someone on this thread says that they don't like how the British people here keep insulting American spellings and you think they're being racist.....But at the same time, every post you have made here saying that British English is the only proper way to go has been insulting to at least 300 million United States citizens.

Anyway, I have no idea what spelling I prefer.

American English: simpler, more intuitive (which isn't saying much for such an already crazy language)

English: More elegant, if slightly more unwieldy than American spellings

Reinstate the letter U people. Colour, honour . It's called English for a reason and that is because it comes from Britain.
