In forum discussions, people tend to abuse their anonymity (see 4chan). But I do appreciate anonymity when it comes to other aspects of the internet (see porn).

Who's anonymous when everyone works from an IP address? I'm just thankful most don't know how to track them and don't have the obsessive nature of 4chan about it.

It depends on the site. I have sites where I put my details down on but then on others I don't. I like being anonymous as it affords a degree of freedom of expression that you don't always have when face to face with someone.

As an artist I also prefer anonymity...I'll never understand why people lust after fame....I DO understand lusting after fortune though :p

If the internet became more personal do you know what would become more personal as well, Ads! Yes, with anonymity we can avoid intrusive ads, without it I'm sure companies would track your personal information more than they do now, and spam you like crazy. Think of M.T. Anderson's "Feed". (I recommend this novel if you have not read it.)

Good point about the Ad's. I HATE the adverts in my googlemail inbox that use keywords in your emails to then generate "related ad's". It's freakish.

I don't mind either. I tend to do both online. I'm an extrovert so having some kind of connection (knowing someones name or whatever) and talking about stuff from a personal perspective.

The amount of privacy or anonymity doesn't bother me as much as people using it to say anything they want to anyone without remorse or consequences (not the word I was looking for) but the fact that there just seems to be too much, almost hatred and or disrespect for their fellow man with rude or ignorant comments and or gestures. Everyone is overly critical.

I have some problems with who I am in the real world. Anonymity allows me to bypass those things and instead be who I actually am, rather than something else that I am not too interested in being. I value that rather highly, because its a chance for me to not worry about stuff that would otherwise bother me, and therefore I am much more comfortable on the net than I am in the real world. But... I don't use my new identity to act like a jerk, so I guess that's why I would see it as important for myself. For some others, well, we all can come up with examples of people who abuse anonymity. >_<

I'm probably about 80/20 or 90/10 for face-to-face vs. anonymous. The one thing I like about the Net is that I can moderate my own comments and not just blurt out stuff that could be taken wrong. (And, in some cases, if I'm really bad and actually do make the bad comment, I can edit it or delete it. This depends on the site, though.)

I prefer having the chance to be unknown, then I can discuss things that I otherwise would not talk about. So I have a different username on these forums and no-one knows that I go on them.

Agreed. If I have the option to give out all of my personal info, I will decline the offer, but I won't stop anyone else from doing so (though I *do* think they're kind of dumb for doing so). Frankly, though, even if it all *was* face to face, there would just be other problems. Right now, we have anonymous trolls. If everything was face-to-face, we'd have people drowning the room with Numa Numa or some such. That, and when there are so many new names and faces to learn, people tend to stop caring about either, so it all comes full circle after a while.

Frankly, I've already adjusted to the anonymous norm, so why change it? That's just my take on it, at any rate.

I don't mind letting people see my personality, and I like learning about them too, but if I don't know them at all, I pretty much am faceless.
