I learnt to play guitar a few years back, but I haven't played it in quite a while. I've only played guitar hero once.

EDIT: Just picked up my guitar. Very pleased to learn that I can still play a few songs.

I too started long before Guitar Hero. Also, I play acoustic guitar and mandolin so I can't say that anything in Guitar Hero really relates to the music I play. At the end of the day GH is fun but nowhere near as fun as being up on stage. If it encourages more people to take up music (and be creative) then all power to it.

I'd say a bit of both. I've always wanted to play guitar, but after playing Guitar Hero, I knew that I really wanted to.

I've always played Guitar hero/Rock band but never had the desire to pick up guitar, It kinda inspired me to try and learn keyboards, but I'm just too lazy to do so.

The sax/clarinet are the only things I can play with some competence.

I always imagined that musicians hate new musicians, but most don't.
Some musicians, especially guitarists, easily climb up to a massively high horse, where they can valiantly look down upon the "lesser" musicians. Sometimes referred to as the Guitar God Complex. Often stems from the inability to judge your own playing, because you've never actually recorded any of it. Listening to your own playing, while playing, is an excruciatingly subjective experience. So a lot of musicians see themselves as far more "skilled" than they actually are.

These same people often take music as a pissing contest, instead of a creative method to express yourself. I think it's one of the big differences between playing an instrument, and Guitar Hero, as GH is essentially nailing as many notes as possible, which is not the point of art. Atleast not in my opinion.

I used to play back in school, was never very good and have never played guitar hero, so i guess i am better with a real guitar, as much as i'd fail.

How many people here only play guitar because they were inspired by guitar hero. I mean seriously, I see guys around 15 playing guitars, I know they got lessons. BUT did they get lessons because of guitar hero, or did they always know how to play.
You know, people were actually playing guitars before Guitar Hero came out. In fact, people were playing guitars before video games were invented. Amazing!

I started on guitar when I was 13, I'm now 35, so yeah um... no guitar computer games when I was learning. Yes I can really play, after 22 years I should hope I can play a little. These days I teach, and to be honest I think that the Guitar Hero games are a good thing because they spark people's interest in the instrument. Playing a guitar is very different though, and most guitar players aren't very good at the Guitar Hero games because they keep subconsciously wanting to move up the fretboard and play the stuff for real...

I'm nearing my 28th birthday and honestly don't remember not playing guitar, but I do think it's pretty cool that a game can lead people to such a rewarding hobby.

Plus, if it doesn't, it's a pretty fun game anyway, so win/win.

I learned to play after I played Guitar Hero, although I had always wanted to play my entire life but could not afford lessons (or a guitar). I only got the chance to start learning when they started an intro to guitar course at my school. That being said I am absolutely terrible at playing guitar.

I'm grade 8. So yes, you could say I do really know how to play guitar.

I've been playing for... er... A long time? But originally I picked up the guitar for songwriting purposes (bass guitar is my first love).

Been playing guitar for about a year now and yeah I'm getting there. Right now I'm at a point where I'm beginning to understand the guitar better and know which note is where instinctively. I've played GH once or twice but it was freaking boring also I kept bending every other note to make it a bit more interesting, needless to say I sucked.

For me GH could never even remotely compete with the real thing. I mean come on, there's just nothing like messing around with string bends and pinch harmonics through an amp with full distortion and delay :D.

If anything, Guitar Hero made not want to learn the guitar, as I'm horrific at it.. It was drumming which actually got me into guitar, as my only guitar-playing amigo is taken by another band, and doesn't really like the music I like, so I'm now learning the guitar just for song writing purposes. My heart will always be with my drums.

I started playing before Guitar Hero even existed. Which probably explains my fierce hatred for the hobby... well, more specifically: how well proficiency at the game is appreciated.
