Well, I rarely end up asleep before 3 in the morning, due to the horrible feeling of the day being wasted if I just sleep the last few hours away.

This caused a huge problem untill recently, as now I am woken up by this:

on my alarm clock, and my mind and body hit the ground running =D

[sub]Gotta wonder at what cost, though, we'll see.[/sub]

I went through quite a hellish period just after my 17th birthday (First AS exams, Gotta love the fuckers!) of basically getting something along the lines of 1-2 hours sleep total per night, the rest of the time lying awake dead still, or trying to read, or counting sheep, or trying to bore myself to sleep, or reading, pretty much everything you can possibly try.

I found one solution of get hammered till I pass out but thats clearly not ideal, inducing unconciousness via poison usually isn't.

Anyway, eventually I went to the doctors after my exam period had finished (mostly because whatever they gave me I didn't want it to make me even worse at the damn things) what they actually gave me was the same stuff Keith Moon killed himself with (Chloromethiazole)
For the record, that DOESN'T HELP YOU SLEEP AT ALL, seeing as one of the side effects is severe irritation of mucous membranes (IE, the back of your nose burns... and burns... for hours.... and hours... and hours)
Either, the pain of that course of meds scared my body back into doing what its told or I got over whatever was keeping me up.

Either way, a slight positive of the whole experience is that I don't have much trouble staying awake when I need to now, about 2 hours sleep and I'm like a spring daisy.
(Also helps when at house parties ;])

Bacon.

I have trouble sleeping when I exercise too little, drink too much alcohol, or eat too many unhealthy things in a given day. I wouldn't say it's regular enough to call insomnia, though some doctors have told me otherwise. Unlike them, I don't want to make excuses for my less than healthy decisions.
...not saying other people don't have valid problems, just that this is a little bit... over-diagnosed... in my personal experience.

I'm capable of falling asleep easily enough (most nights), but staying asleep is my problem. On any given night I will wake up no less than 6 or 7 times. It's not usually for long, most of the time I'm able to simply roll over and fall back asleep within 5 minutes, but it's just the annoyance of waking up over and over every night.

If a sleep problem is only sleeping about five or six hours a night then yes I have sleep problems. Otherwise I do just fine. It's the pain that keeps me up until I am exhausted. Old injuries will do that. It doesn't really bother me when I am up and about, but I really notice it when trying to relax.

I occasionally have trouble sleeping, or trouble with over sleeping -_-. Usually 1-2 times per week, not too bad though.

My sleeping pattern was incredibly backwards for over a year, but I have recently forced myself into a more normal routine. I would generally wake up around 1-3pm and go to sleep around 6-9am, whereas now I am sleeping by 2-3am, and waking up between 10am-1pm. It's not quite where I want it to be, but it's a pretty big change considering how long I've been staying up all night.

As for falling asleep, I struggled with that constantly during high school and when I was depressed. Four years following high school I slept fine. More recently I found myself struggling to fall asleep (only making my sleeping pattern worse), which was incredibly frustrating. Since forcing myself to actually sleep at night I'm finding it easier to fall asleep, but not quite easy enough.

Melatonin helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body's circadian (internal 'clock') rhythm, and has been what I've resorted to using when I can't fall asleep. Other than that I generally forcibly stop myself from thinking about stresses or any worries, and simply daydream while trying to fall asleep.

It's 20 past 1 in the UK, as the UK posters know of course, and this is a normal night for me.

I'll call it a day now, school in the morning, easy first lesson, more sleepy time.

Yes. It's mainly an anxiety related thing for me, but I'll go a couple of nights a week without sleep pretty routinely.

No I tend to sleep fine, but I have trouble sleeping when my girlfriend comes over due to our different sleep patterns, she may be asleep before 10pm whereas I go at 2am.

I've also had some problems sleeping when it's there's a stressful day to wake up to.

I'm not sure if it's regular old insomnia, stress, or my possible depression that is making me have such a hard time with sleeping.

I get exercise and I eat (fairly) well, but I have a lot of trouble sleeping.

Not completely sure why, but I've never been able to fall asleep anywhere that isn't a bed, either.
