Poll: Do you think aliens look like humans but with a few differences or exactly like humans?

Well, I've always assumed it's like Mass Effect where most of them walk up right and have a human-like form and such but we walk upright based on our environment and the fact we adapted to it so it would be safe to assume that an alien that obviously comes from another planet may not have the same set of obstacles in his environment and may have adapted to look differently because of it.

*deep breath*

A humanoid figure would make sense. There is a reason we evolved into it- its incredibly effective.

Beyond that, probably no similarity.
Effective? At what?
At conquering the entire planet.

It accommodates a large brain (relative to overall size), allows for excellent mobility, allows for easy use of tools and other such necessities of society.

I have no idea what aliens will look like when we find them, but there are billions and billions of stars in the universe, so I don't see why it's unreasonable to think that some would look similar to us.

We do not know (but the government does).

Maybe or not

The ET experts say there are at least 6 different types of aliens on earth. some are good others are bad. I suspect the main reason the bad ones have not invaded us is because the good ones will not let them. Also, it can not be cheap to invaded a world. If it bleeds, it can die.

Effective? At what?
At conquering the entire planet apparently.
I bet a race built like cougars who were just as intelligent could do just as well if not better than us.

And tools were designed by humans, for humans. Smart cougar people could develop tools for themselves.

A cougar does not have the physical capability to use tools. Any race that had enough intelligence to create a spear could defeat a race of cougars that had a human intellect.

There's a possibilty, my money is on our first alien encounter being something like this.

Then they'll inject us with a venom that dissolves our insides so they can slurp us up through a straw.

Cougar people could develop their own version and make it a cougar spear since they're just as intelligent.

But they probably wouldn't need it since they have tactics in combat now, with much greater agility + the sharp teeth and speed that their cougarness provides.

Cmon, you know we'd have been screwed if Cougars could formulate plans.

.....I like the idea of cougar-people now.

I don't see why they would. However, it would depend on the world. Even a world exactly like Earth on the other side of the sun would not have humans on it.

Everything. the humanoid form is extremely adaptable, especially actual humanoids. we can swim, operate under water, climb trees and walk. short, thin arms with nimble hands allow us to utilze tools, and long, powerful legs give us mobility.

The humanoid form is a compromise that lets us do much. Sure, in any particular task you will find an animal that out classes us, but its garunteed that we can do things that animal isn't even capable of in the least.

That's mainly do to our brains and especially our opposable thumbs, humanoid doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it.

OT: It's possible. Not all aliens (assuming more than one other species), but some. There is more galaxies outside the milky way, and we haven't been out of our own solar system.

As it is, a huge percentage of animals have the brain power required to realize that pointy objects kill things. However, the fact is, most do not have the ability to shape or use spears. While a race of cougar people would have better tactics than they do now, they would still most likely fall to spears which can be thrown or can be used to give whoever is using it incredible reach.

And the Cougars then use their human-intelligence to build shields.

It'd be us but with greater dexterity, agility, stamina, more fur, better vision, with claws and teeth thrown in.

Shit would be so over in the times when the spear was the pinnacle of technology. Nowadays.... guns may even the battlefield, but now Cougars have guns. :O

Doctor Who. Yes, I made an account just to say that.

As for the poll, I'm guessing sentient aliens would evolve to adapt to their environments, so it seems like they'd at least be humanoid if they lived on an Earth-like planet.
Welcome to the site.

Hmmmm...I wonder Who it could be...

Anyway, if we're talking advanced society, intelligence aside, there are only two restrictions for such an organism. It would have to be mobile, so no barnacles, and it would have to be capable of using tools, and manipulating objects finely. Humans are perfect for this, but we aren't the only ones. Crows have managed to use tools to find food in places they would otherwise be unable to. [http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2010/04/21/tech-crow-three-tools.html] So we might encounter avian races in the galaxy, or perhaps a giant blob, who the fuck knows! We think humanoid species are likely because we are human and they are the only ones we can think of. But it's unlikely they are actually common.

A race completely composed of cougars? Isn't that the Asari?

On a serious note, can you explain how a cougar can construct a shied?

not only is there a humanoid race out there but there is probably another human race since there are almost infinite solar systems

No, of course they do not look like humans. They will probably look like monsters straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft story at least. The may even be solid geometric objects that just float around and communicate by pure mathematics, we do not know for sure.

I'm guessing that there are many different intelligent forms of life all over the universe, and that they are as varied in form as can possibly be imagined. The possibility of there being aliens that look exactly like humans? I'd say there is a high probability just because there is so much that is unknown about the rest of the universe.
