Poll: do you think smoking is attractive?

I voted indifferent as I really don't care. I do admit that it colours my initial impression of a younger person who does it though. It is widely accepted as one of the least healthy things you can do to yourself. The information on this is everywhere but idiots are still taking this habit up out of stupid reasons like "peer pressure" or "it's a cool and adult thing to do." It's neither of those things. It's a habit forming drug that is considered more addictive than heroine. Just so stupid to start it these days.

It's fucking expensive to smoke here in Canada unless you use the contraband smokes. It fucks up your lungs heart and god only knows what else and people are still starting to smoke.

Now once I get to know these people I put aside any initial bias, but I still want to pick these people up and shake them.

This rant is not directed at the older generation who had tobacco companies lying for years about how bad it is for you but at teenagers and early 20s folks who take it up for the first time. It just fucking baffles me.

Aesthetically it's badass and debatably sexy. On screen and on paper it adds a flare to a character that is hard to describe. It's a noir feeling that I love.

In real life... there are few things more unattractive. The smell on hair and the taste of a kiss makes me never want to date a smoker. When their house reeks of it, it makes me not want to visit. When the stench gets on me, it makes me not want to be around the person at all... so yeah... fuck that...

If someone did that to me, I would punch them, smoking may be killing me, but invading my space like that, stealing from me, that requires action, smoking is expensive, that one cigarette is worth like $0.65-$0.75.
Of course I haven't met anyone so aggressive in that way though, and being in Canada, and looking the way I do, most people, even when you can see them practically seething with rage towards me for god knows whatever reason cuz I don't generally instigate shit, don't bother me.

I smoke, well I wouldn't say regularly, but I smoke an e cigarette when in my car and smoke quite heavily when at the bar because while I love going out, I have traces of an old social anxiety and smoking takes the edge off when it becomes overwhelming.

Honestly I think a case could be made for assault in that instance. Especially if he did it more than once. It is NEVER acceptable to invade one's personal space in that way. Some people in the anti-smoking crowd are assholes. I know I came across as judgmental in my previous post. I can also point to no fewer than 3 close blood relatives who have died from smoking related illness and my mother is in serious health from it as well. I make no apologies for my attitude as I can legitimately say that both mine and some of my loved one's lives are poorer from the existence of these things.

But if you are an anti-smoking person, stay the fuck out of the smoking area. I would not be surprised if this twerp was an ex smoker himself. It sounds like the zealot kind of attitude that former smokers often get.

I don't know, it's not a big deal. I understand why people hate it or find it off-putting but the way some people talk about smokers is so excessive, unless they're exhaling in your face or something. I mean, it's not acceptable to talk about other group of people that way. Like, repulsive, abhorrent, Christ, people who have the occasional cigarette aren't the scum of the Earth. It must be nice for some people in this thread to feel as superior as they do.

I don't have a problem with people who smoke really on a personal level. I think it's their choice and while it's not the decision I'd make they're free to. At the same time I find the smell horribly off-putting so I definitely find people who smoke less attractive.

honestly, smoking does look cool and can really give character to someone in a movie or tv show or whatever, but the actual practice of it is a huge turnoff.

it really is just nasty. it also limits the amount of time you can even be around a person. i dont hang around next to people while they smoke, because i dont want to secondhand smoke (unless we are outdoors). so, if i were with someone who smoked, i would be leaving them all alone anytime they did so. thats no fun.

then, of course, is the fact that it is incredibly unhealthy. i would certainly hate to be with someone for a long time who wound up dead from lung cancer.

finally, there is the stupidity aspect of it. nobody has any excuse for smoking this day in age. if you are less than thirty years old, you have known your whole life that smoking is a terrible idea, and giving in to peer pressure is not an excuse. if you smoke, you are at the very least, somewhat dumb. and you know it.

Having lived all my life among smokers, and having been a smoker myself some years ago, it's not something that would put me off someone alone. Smell and taste is a bit of a minus, but not one that would count much against a person I actually liked.

That being said, having a smoke is a surprisingly social activity, and can bring a relationship closer.

Guess being together while your brain is flooded with pleasure inducing chemicals helps.

Also, in response to the massive hatred of smokers on this thread, I find any person who viciously condemns smokers but has never smoked just as ignorant and small minded as they claim smokers are.

Personally I find ignorance and bigotry(oh yes, this IS bigotry) much more disgusting than smoking.

I was a pack a day smoker but I no longer smoke and now a vaper, it's not attractive, it looks like I'm putting a light saber in my mouth while smoke comes out, but you think I care? it gets the job done.

Even looking at it from a purely aesthetic point of view I find cigarettes disgusting, in no small part due to my parents being 40 year chain smokers that look to be in about their late-50's after a lifetime of inhaling those things on an hourly basis. Beyond that they stink horribly and the stench tends to cling to those that do smoke even after showering from my experience on the matter, which makes them unbearable to be around, although in my case that's more because of cigarette smoke being one of the few things that causes my generally latent asthma to go all Godzilla on my throat and cause me to start actively suffocating should they remain anywhere near me. In addition to that if I don't nearly die from it I'll still develop a migraine due to the stench. Seriously, that's some rank-ass shit right there.

And you know what? Even so I think that the fellow/lady that mentioned a non-smoker actively going out of their way to pull their cigarette out of their mouth and stamp it out at their feet about a page ago should have punched the dick meister in the throat considering they had to enter the smoker's area to do so. So long as you don't go forcing your potentially lethal (in the very literal immediate sense for myself) addictions on to me I won't say a god damned thing or even do so much as give you a dirty look, and you know why? Because it's your body and frankly none of my business.

So continue to puff away smokers, just have the courtesy to do so downwind from me lest I keel over dead from it, and I'll continue to have the courtesy to not treat you like a brain damaged sub-human because of that particular vice.

While smoking used to be romanticized and seen as a sign of maturity, I tend to see it as a sign of weakness and lack of willpower.

However, it depends on their age. If they are from older generations then I don't think much of them; it was part of their culture and they're just sort of "victims" of lack of information, though I shake my head at people who deny the cons or make little effort to at least try to stop.

If you are younger (no real specific age, maybe mid-twenties to 30?) and you smoke, I can't help but lose a decent chunk of respect for them and think they are incredibly stupid. There is absolutely no benefit from smoking, and the health benefits have been around long enough that anyone who is that young and smoking is basically stupid enough to be saying "Look at me, I'm causing permanent damage to my body, weeeeeeee!".

So to get that out of the way, if you are a very infrequent or social smoker I'm not really bothered by it, but otherwise it repulses me. :/

I apologize if you are offended, as I did not intend to offend. I was simply trying to explain my thoughts on young people who choose to smoke. I have a live-and-let-live policy: you have every right to make whatever choices you make, and honestly, I'm not bothered by other's choices and won't attack them for them. I expect the same in return.

But I hold the right to judge someone based on their decisions, just like you have a right to judge me based on my decisions. I don't know how old you are, as your age factors heavily into what I think of someone and their smoking habits, but if you are a young smoker, it is a stupid decision. :/ I understand that many people start because of peer pressure, but I have only seen one person below the age of 25 who smokes, and she didn't seem to be a chain smoker or anything.

The cons of smoking are well documented, and society has done a commendable job of trying to prevent the younger generations from falling into the same holes that the older generations did when it comes to getting addicted to tobacco. "Smoking is bad" is hammered into your head at a young age.

With that said, I don't go around crusading and attacking people who smoke. If I see someone smoke, I think "Wow, that's stupid", and move on. My mom and dad smoke, most of my mom's friends smoke, most of my friends older than their mid twenties smoke. All of them, if asked, will say that they regret it and to not start smoking tobacco. I see the effects on the ones who are my parents age (late thirties to fifties), and it's not good. Not "quarantine them to stop the spread of this plague" bad, but their skin has aged a decade, their teeth are permanently discolored, they frequently cough, and their borderline slaves to their addiction (they become incredibly uncomfortable and irritated if they go more than a few hours without a smoke).

I don't mind what decisions you make as long as they don't negatively effect me (don't smoke in my vicinity, second-hand smoke and all), but that doesn't mean I don't have opinions on those who make bad lifestyle choices. This will sound condescending as fuck, but you don't call non-smokers anything "nasty" because we haven't done anything apparently worth being judged nasty, while smoking is to be discouraged (the cigarette is bad, not the person, but the person should understand it's bad).
