Because a lot of my friends like it, I've watched a couple of episodes from a bunch of different shows but they were all awful.

The majority of anime is just fucking stupid, imo. I honestly just cant stand it. I hate the artstyle and some of the anime that i've watched have had some incredibly stupid jokes.

Oh yes, I love me some anime!
But I'm very picky.

I mostly watch anime movies:
- Ghost in the Shell
- Akira
- Steamboy
- Anything by Studio Ghibli
- Anything by Satoshi Kon
- Dead Leaves
- Tekkonkinkreet
- Metropolis
- ...

I don't really like series - I just can't get into stuff like Bleach, Death Note, Dragon Ball, Naruto or whatever. Till this day, there have only been two exceptions:
- Paranoia Agent
- FLCL

(something I also like about these series is that they're SHORT. I don't like stuff that just goes on and on and on...)

I watch anime and read a of of manga as well. It just interests me so I watch it. That's really all there is to it. I like animation in general.

I find it interesting that everyone keeps pointing out the fanbase. From my experience at least the crazy fans you're all speaking of are few and far between. Even when I went to anime club in high school the vast majority of people were just normal guys and gals that like Japanese animation.

I'm sure plenty of them crawl out of the woodwork at conventions and such but most people that watch anime aren't like that, at least from my experience.

I'd count it towards an addiction cause I view 1-2 series weekly + the regular episodes I watch weekly...I call it too much free time and not enough booze money. Most of the stuff is trash and I'll say that as a fan. There's still some really really worthwhile material. The Japs are way ahead of us western orientated types in psychological dramas and some animes handle that beautifully.I could name a few but what's the point since you've probably seen them if you like anime and you don't think Naruto and Bleach sums up the title "good anime"("which they don't piece of kiddy piss crap arms races" General Sarrano).

I can't stand the fans, though.
I believe the people you are thinking of are "weeabos". Even the fans hate weeabos. Don't let someone telling you they're a fan of anime make you think they are of the "Japan is superior" kind.

[sub]Yeah, I suspect you know this already. I just need to make sure...[/sub]
Yeah, those are the ones.

And the creepily obsessive fans (although they're more common in Japan, presumably).

I've found that in a lot of cases, video games and anime are only a few short steps apart. Of course, I made this observation during my JRPG phase, but I think it holds true in more cases than not.

I tend to thoroughly enjoy anime, but there are a lot of things about it that get to me. Like cutesy characters, or excessive fan-service. A lot of staple themes* can sometimes get to me as well, but those are little pet peeves of mine, and are probably a result of my low-grade insanity.

Yeah i watch a lot of anime. Or at least i used to. There was a point when i had about 5 series on the go and was watching about 5 hours a day. Now however, i only watch a few hours a week and am only following 2 new series (bakuman and gosick). Besides, i'm more into manga these days anyway.

I like a few. I'm currently watching Monster (all episodes, commercial-free on Youtube; watch it!), and old favorites include FLCL and Paranoia Agent.

well when theres about a hundered different series its not to hard for everyone to find something they like in anime. thats one thing i like that if i finish a short series (though most are still running and just dont end) i still have a hundred more choices in what to watch next.

I watch a little of everything anime included. I don't seek it out and am not a fan of the medium specifically though.

One thing I've noticed among many gaming sites is that there's a pretty big overlap between gamers and anime fans. I think Pokemon has a little to do with it, otherwise I don't really know why.

Also, since you asked, I suppose my growing up on Pokemon had something to do with my liking anime, though ultimately I just ran into a good bit of series I liked.

I have to recommend you try Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

The series you mentioned you don't like are all roughly in the same genre and demographic, SAC is outside of that.

Theres a small overlap but i feel a lot of gamers (like myself) watch shows and find far too many similarities to continue viewing it as a worthwhile form. I have seen good shows, but they are few and far between, and i don't (and can understand others who don't) have the energy or time to sift through all of this.

I will get flamed for this opinion and i don't mind. Its a very self-involved medium.
If you're open to something, have tried it before, and make a reasonable, non-flaming judgement, it is ridiculous to be flamed for it.

That said, try Claymore, sorry I do have to recommend it =P

OT:

Yeah, over the last few months I started watching anime, and it has reached the stage where the white powder round my nose comes in pixels.

This is a silly thread. I like some films, but I'm not a fan of all films. Same with every medium. Do I like some anime series? Yeah, they're ok. Do I like anime in general? No more than I like any other medium

I've been watching a lot of anime since mid-way through high school, so around twenty years or so. I have around 300gb of it on my media server, and dozens of DVDs around the house. What? No, I don't have a problem...

Anime is one of those things I find it hard to have any appreciation for. The stylistic shorthand that makes anime recognizable as such is so formulaic in ways that all the visual interest is stripped away for me and is very unappealing. I find the cutesy/humorous stuff annoying as balls, and the "mature" recommendations have this juvenile feel to them.

I remember it getting really popular with the nerdy kids I knew around the time I graduated from high school, and I'd be lying if I said the obsessive way people go on about it didn't turn me away from the idea of anime a little more than the cartoons did on their own. Maybe you just have to grow up with it, I dunno.

I watch a lot.
Mainly because I like the stories, characters and settings of places.
Ofcourse there are really many same kind of anime series and clichéd once as well.
But nevertheless I still continue watching them. ^^
Yup pretty much my response there.
