Poll: DOA jiggle physics discussion, should it exist?

Not...sure what I'm meant to be discussing here, but...any kind of game should be able to be created, and if you want to play it, there should always be a way for that to happen, short of you moving to another country. Minors and adults is a whole other kettle of fish, but if you're an adult who is the government to tell you you can't handle a game because it may be offensive? F*** you, authority.

On the other issue at hand, jiggle physics ia very minor crime compared to the overall treatment of females as characters (BUT I'M NOT GETTING INTO THAT). While it does take away a bit of gravitas when used inappropriately, it has the right to exist and should be in any game that wants it.

That may be a meme associated with games but the idea of skimpy female armor in no way originated or is limited to videogames. If anything, games have emulated the standard set forth in fantasy novels and movies. That meme could have been made decades ago about various forms of media.

And that makes it okay?

Didn't say that. Just didn't want it thought that games were the primary or worse offender.

Just trying to say that there's a lot of room for improvement and variety and that I believe it's fair game to criticize games like this, in an effort to prod developers into making those improvements or adding more variety.

Games like DoA aren't evil or anything like that. I however don't think there's much to be admired about them either.

If your standards come down to the best thing to be said about a game is that it's not bad then I'd agree that DoA shouldn't be criticized.

If your standards however are somewhat higher and you'd like games that inspire and amaze you then I'd say there's a few things to be said about DoA, it's female characters being one of them.

To be fair, from what i hear the male version of that race wears even less and is just as sexualized. Cant really use it as an example when both genders in that race are basically whores.

Women as purely sex objects in games are not the norm.....anymore at least. Hell i would argue that there is more great straight female characters than there are straight male characters in the past...2 years.

There are still a few games whose appeal heavily invests in sex (DOA, ninja gaiden, whatever that mud wrestling game was like 8 years ago), as long as it is just a niche and not the norm, whatever.

Again, what happens to males is quite frankly irrelevant as to whether or not what happens to women is good or not. Having a score of shallow female characters does not suddenly become admirable when accompanied by a score of shallow male characters.

I'm not saying that having shallow and unrealistic characters is something that happens uniquely to women. That being the case however does not make it good that those type of characters are, in my opinion, too prevalent in gaming. See, for example, Jim's video on the FPS sausage-fest.

I'm not trying to make the point that this is somehow bad or evil. There's nothing wrong with shallow characters. There's however nothing right about them either. They're exactly that, shallow, uninspiring and "meh".

And I think that, currently, there's still too much "meh" in gaming. I'd personally like to see a bit more inspiring and deep things, female characters being one of those things.

Oh, it is shallow as hell. But in this case, its a fighting game. The depth behind the character is nearly meaningless. The only depth in a fighting game is in its mechanics. It is like expecting a riveting saga from a football game.

If they pulled a DOA in a rpg game (or any game that revolves around a story), yea that would make me angry because it is a wasted opportunity for a great character. that rarely happens anymore.

Female characters have shown vast improvements in the past decade. They are hitting a wall right now, sure, but it is the same wall that the entire industry is hitting. lack of creativity, stagnation, making games that are the same as every other game.

Agreed on that, the issue is far greater than just female characters.

I personally think that the only way to get past that wall is to get developers to spend more time and effort on their writing, so that they may develop working theories of how to tell truly amazing stories in the unique medium of gaming.

I also think that criticizing any game, even a fighting game, that does not put this much effort into it's writing and characters is a good way to let developers know that we desire them to spend more time and effort on that writing.

And even if that criticizing sometimes descends into whining, bitching and moaning I don't think we should stop doing it, although it's definitely fair game to point out that someone is whining/bitching/moaning.

I'm sorry if this post seems silly to you, the reason I did it is to understand what is the common opinion other people who visit the escapist have about the whole idea of limiting some computer games (or pieces of art) because some groups find it offensive.

The thing is that people might consider DOA offensive the same way you consider the "rape games" extreme and unworthy of being imported/made, if you have the right to decide that games like this shouldn't get published where you live than why doesn't other people get to ban DOA or modern warfare? (and assasin's creed, and bioshock, and spore) because each of this games has the potential to be offensive to certain people in society hence the slippery slope.

I didn't give answers like "only some of the offensive games shouldn't be made" because "offensive" is subjective.
